Warlord - the state of play

Recommended Posts

If you want fluff, look up the faction books. I believe all the original 8 were published. They're still floating around places like ebay, and amazon.

Crusaders, Reven, Necropolis, Nefsokar, and Overlords were the only Faction books released.  They were great books, but the problem was, they were being written by the Reaper staff who were also trying to manage their day-to-day jobs at the factory as well.  Too many hats, not enough heads.

At that point, the plan to make individual faction books was dropped, and instead a multifaction book was going to come out.

RAGE Chronicles was sort of a precursor to that.

Then the rules got rebooted with 2.0.

If you can get your hands on it, the old Dark Heavens Apocalypse boxed set has a ton of fluff about the various countries and powers in Adon (Warlord game world) that Warlord is based directly off from.  Even the Savage North armies are based on stuff from Apocalypse.

I could have sworn there were more....

I knew there were only the five, but I still had to double check.

I think there was work being done on Elves and Dwarves before the plan was scrapped.

I picked up a hard cover the other day called "Warlord, Battles in Worn Torn Taltos" . . . where in the Warlord Publishing history does this book fall?

That's a first edition book.  Second edition Core Rulebook was softcover.

If you look at the binding, if there is a ribbon on the edge of the binder, that is a second printing, and some corrections were made between 1st and second printing.

I don't see a ribbon and looking inside I see a "First Printing June 2004". The binding also has "Core Rules" so duh! Its the core rules . . . :-)

I already have 2nd Ed and Savage North. Did the fluff change much?

Not that it really matters . . . I have the book now and you'll have to PRYITOUTOFMYGRUBBYFINGERS to get it . . . :-)

Fluff didn't change at all between 1E & 2E AFAIK. Just the armies were expanded that didn't get Faction Book love.

KS III is currently giving ridiculous amounts of Warlord love.

There is also fluff in the older casketworks. You'd have to look through them to see what articles are in each.

I love the Dark Heavens Apocalypse box set. Great fluff.

I believe the very first one has a lot of fluff and should be availabe in pdf for free on Reaper's website.

With so many Warlord models in the KS we should be talking up the game in the KS comments to try and drum up interest with newcomers.

Great idea!  I just did so in the comments, time now.

A handy list of which ones are Warlord models and which ones are close proxies for a Warlord model would be a fun thing to compile. But, in this thread.

I saw 5 Crusaders, Some Tre Manor Orcs...

All of the initial core is either a Warlord model, or can be immediately proxied in for an existing model.

As some of you know, @buglips*the*goblin and I paint some German Infantry of WWII for Warlord Games tabletop game Bolt Action - or another similar set of rules. You can find our WIP thread ->here<-

But though the key to success is hard work, all good projects some when end somewhere. To celebrate this, we decided to set up a Show Off thread. So ... enjoy what we come up with until all of our Germans are painted ... (which will be in ten years or so)

First off - the first 5 men of my winter unit.

      Enjoy

@SisterMaryNapalm and I both have some German Grenadiers (and I think he was some Fallschirmjager as well) that we are working on, and since that's a fine coincidence I thought it would be fun to share a thread with our work on them.  I know we're at least using somewhat different paints, and possibly also different methods, so it might be interesting to see how they turn out.

These are mine from the Bolt Action Band of Brothers starter set.  I have another squad, but all of those are wearing standard Feldgrau uniforms so they're represented here by the Leutnant with binoculars and map, and the NCO with field cap and submachinegun.  Most of the others are wearing camouflaged tent quarters, so that should prove... challenging.  At this stage, I've assembled them, primed them with stynylrez, and they've got a coat of VMC Feldgrau that I darkened 50/50 with Reaper Brown Liner.  They're more assembled than I'd probably prefer, but I'm used to figures with fewer pieces so I haven't quite got a working method worked out for multipart multioption plastic figures yet.  I don't expect it will be too much trouble.  I hope not, anyway.

Apologies for any craptacular photos, I'm compelled to use my ancient Galaxy S3 and haven't yet replaced my camera.  Frankenphone sometimes works, and sometimes it calls in sick.

My painting time is pretty limited these days, but I still fit it in here and there. I find elementals to be excellent and relaxing subjects for brief speedpainting sessions; their crude natures are very forgiving for the time-constrained.

This guy is a pretty hefty piece of metal & a nice unique sculpt.

I started painting these in 2007!  I had received two sets on clearance from a gaming website.
I picked them up again briefly in 2011.
I had just purchased a bunch of Vallejo Game Colors.
I recently picked them up again to get them off the shelf of shame that they seemed to be permanent fixtures of.
Sadly, the VGC Paints were not able to salvage.  One of them was more done than the others, so he looks a little different.
The front right of the first picture.
I finished them off quickly with Reaper paints.

This was the first time I primed minis white, then built up layers of very thinned basecoats.
It made these guys much brighter.

Sorry some of the pics are out of focus.

I am thinking to do the next set more black/red or more of a realistic lizard scheme.
      Enjoy.
