Warlord is NOT dead...though I think that the name is.

Herzog Games has been given permission to publish the game under a different name.  We are currently working on producing our own art and diagrams along with a reformatting of the rules in general, adding optional rules and rules for larger multiplayer games.

The plan is to make the rules available in a PDF format.   We are also in the process of adding new factions to expand the appeal of the game.   If you are interested in helping to playtest new factions please drop me a PM.

So that was two years ago... License lapsed? ...any ongoing activity?

As title says. The game seems interesting, even if I really just intend to buy minis to paint instead of play. With the ridiculous cost of most mini war games, this is one of the few with quality minis that is affordable.

But, like I said, I'm fine with just buying the minis to paint and play occasional pick up games with my friends. Just need to know if there will ever be any new releases?

(EDIT: Sorry for triple posting... I didn't realize it would do that.)

That would be rather interesting to have done.  I think making a game that can use the 3D renders that are beginning to take over for mini design and production would be a good use of resources.  But I do not know the costs involved and much as I like the game I obviously have no real input on these things.

It appears the current intention is for people to buy the miniatures to paint and then play a few occasional game. At one time, there was a kickstarter for a sim but it fell flat on its face. Besides, without any support from Reaper, I doubt very much anyone will try again. Retrospectively, when Reaper launched Warlord back in 2003, I suspected that it got hurt a lot financially. I believe that the 2nd edition and its supplement were doing not too bad but far from ideal when compared to all the successful KS projects on bones. Although new releases will be exciting, you will increase the chance of play imbalance. Warlord already has 20 factions with each one having 2 to 3 different tactics. It is hard to add in something new.

IIRC all planned models for the various factions have been released.  They do not intend to grow the game any more.  It's a fun game, but it never really took off, even with company support and structured tournaments.  All the figures and rulebooks are in stock, so enjoy the game, I just wouldn't expect any more expansions.

Or, look at it this way, you're not going to get burned having to buy a new edition rulebook and 'upgraded' models every two years.

I sort of stumbled on the game when I went to do the tour during reapercon, and have decided to take the plunge into figuring out how to play and gather some mini's. I have to say one of the biggest factor's that disappoint me is the fluff or very bare bones of it. For instance for the Crusader faction they speak of these orders coming together, but no real information about the orders are there. For instance no real idea what a Justicar is besides a unit in their army, was it a part of the original templar faction? Are they a new order? Who are these gods they mention? What is the Ivy Crown besides apparently poor knights?

Then there is fluff on a unit for being a cavalry in the Sisters of the Blade, but its model and rules is infantry. Another Sister unit with fluff shows she starts her own mini faction in the group, but is just an elite so can not lead said group in battle according to her rules. Talk about how shield sister dwarfs are a big thing, no dwarf rules or models in the army.

So far I am liking what I am reading about the rules, looks interesting and can scratch some of the itches that I am looking for, but the fluff bothers me more than anything else, although I managed to snag the crusaders faction book so maybe there will be some questions answered in there.

The good thing about this game is you can proxy stuff easy enough, the names on units could be changed in order to make them Your dudes, all male Sister of the blade army if you want? Mousling blood gnomes? Could be done. Adon in general could go for a setting book/just stuff said about it in a convenient place to look, such as the main reaper website. There seems to just be a lot of stuff that you are expected to know about the setting, but as coming in as a first timer, you have no basis to go off of.

I do want  a Duskwarden faction for warlord however, easily best faction in dreadmere

@Apollo Densin, how goes Warlord for you?  I am trying to get back into painting miniatures so I thought I'd take a look at Warlord since it keeps popping up in my search for figures.  I had the old edition long ago but never played.

It seems a few links are now going to dead / Page Not Found sites.  Where would one look for the current data cards to download?

Thanks.

Nice, thanks for the link! If it's your site or you are involved with the project, thanks very much for the effort! I actually hunted around in the top menu pages before finding the army builder lower down back on the front page, so please consider also putting links to it and the data cards reference in the Game Reference menu.

Where would you like to see the Army Builder link appear?
