MapForge battlemap creation software [Kickstarter]

Recommended Posts

Hi folks. I am creating cross-platform map-making software (for Windows and macOS), suitable for creating both print-resolution maps and lower-resolution maps suitable for use with virtual tabletop software. It's called MapForge, and it will be sort of a spiritual successor to Dundjinni, but with a greater focus on stitching maps together from pre-existing map tiles and then customizing the resulting map (with additional decorations, etc.) to suit the GM's particular needs.

MapForge Interface Mockup v2 Menu.png

MapForge should appeal to GMs of face-to-face game sessions and to those using any VTT software, who want to create their own slick-looking battlemaps to visually enrich their RPG sessions (in any genre), but who find existing mapping programs (including image-editing tools such as Gimp and Photoshop) too intimidating/confusing/expensive.

I am currently running a Kickstarter campaign to fund the program's development. The software will be priced to be very accessible/affordable, probably $30 or so, but it's just $27 during the Kickstarter campaign. And to help offset the cost even more, there will be at least 9 free content Add-Ons for it, covering various genres. MapForge will also offer a free level of use, so having a license won't be required to make maps with it.

Version 1.0 of MapForge should be ready to go on sale in July 2017. Shortly after that, MapForge will also have the ability to generate random "dungeon" layouts via Donjon.

I hope you will all take a minute to check out the project, play around with the downloadable prototype, and if you like what you see, tell your GM friends about it.

Thanks!

--Hernan (aka Heruca)

PS: The campaign funded on day 1, and is now at 475% of the funding goal, with ~1330 backers and 9 days to go. All the Stretch Goals have already been unlocked.

If its going on IndieGoGo now, doesn't that mean you massively missed your projected date above of "Version 1.0 of MapForge should be ready to go on sale in July 2017"?

He used up the money from the initial KS.. he either needs to get cash or take longer to finish it as a side job.. he underestimated the work involved.. not entirely shocking

That's kind of what I was saying, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence. It's not uncommon but not a good sign.

Allow me to clear that up a bit.

Sentence 1 is true. I posted about it in this KS Update.

Sentence 2 is mostly false. Allow me to quote from the aforementioned Update.

"I have no doubt that I'll be able to deliver MapForge v1.0 and the 50 Add-Ons promised, so don't worry."

What I might not be able to deliver on right away is on two of the Stretch Goals from the KS (Donjon support and the Crucible app that would let you roll-your-own MapForge Add-Ons). That would likely require me to take on a side job and work on those Stretch Goals on the side. So it would still get done, it'll just take longer.

Sentence 3 is true. I hit some unforeseeable technical roadblocks along the way that took a long time to resolve. But please keep in mind that I am delivering something that will be significantly better than was was initially promised. A couple of examples: I promised high-res export times that would be completed in a matter of minutes, and am delivering export times best measured in seconds. I promised a maximum map size of 10000x10000 but the app now supports up to 20% larger maps.

This is why I no longer support software Kickstarters - feature creep. Software that works as originally promised and delivered on time is better than software with extra features delivered a year later. (I'm also professionally in software development for over a decade.)

The general consensus of the KS backers has been very supportive, with comments along the lines of "take the time you need to get it right". It's not like folks are having fits because of the delay.

I'm a backer on this Kickstarter and for this one, and for most Kickstarters, I'm fine with delays so long as:

1. The creator keeps up communication with their backers via Kickstarter updates.

2. The creator is open and honest in their communication, even if what they are telling me is bad news.

3. I get what I pledged for eventually.

I think with Crowdfunding you have to go into it expecting that there will be delays. I've backed well over 100 crowd funding campaigns now and I'd say more of them have been late (some a couple of years late) than have been on time. Only a handful have actually been early.

This thread could use a little closure.

MapForge v1.0 was released back in March 2018. There were some issues with the initial version, so it's been updated to v1.0.3 (which now runs on the latest MAC OS X version, High SIerra). MapForge v1.0.4 is due out within 2 weeks. Support for hexgrid overlays is imminent.

The app has a new website on a speedy SSD-equipped server, and the MapForge Store is now open for business, for those who missed out on the Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns.

Those who backed the crowdfunding campaign/s but have not yet claimed their license, or their Add-On registration codes, should do so by following the instructions posted here.

I haven’t backed any of Bears Heads kickstarters yet, but I’ve been tempted by everyone.
This is the one that I give in to.
      https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/98300108/narthoks-the-excellent
But hurry! It’s funded with ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT!

As nice as that sculpt is, it’s the sci-fi and bartender versions I’m most excited about. The stretch goals for those have been reached, but only concept drawings are available to show.

I think these are great unique looking eye beasts.
@TheAuldGrump maybe something you could use for your campaign?

My 5 1/2 yo son is super into Batman.  I had set up a Pathfinder game for the grownups, but only filled 2/4 seats.  My son has shown a little and growing interest in tabletop gaming.  So I made some stats for Batman as a Pathfinder character and used his LEGO Batman on the battle grid.

Here are how it came out: attributes were rolled.
      Race Human
      Class Ranger (Urban) lvl 1
      Str 16
      Dex 19 (+2 human)
      Con 14
      Int 13
      Wis 14
      Cha 8

      Favored Class Ranger +1 HP
      Trait: Rich Parents
      Trait: Deft Dodger (+1 Reflex)
      Favored Enemy Humanoid (human)
      Feat - Improved Unarmed Strike
Feat Human - Exotic Weapon Prof - Shuriken

Skills - don’t remember exactly, sheet isn’t in front of me:
Acrobatics, Craft (alchemy), Disable Device, knowledge (local), perception, Survival, Stealth

Gear- I took some liberties here for flavor:
Mwk Studded Leather, Batarangs(shuriken shaped like a bat available in a lethal or non lethal variety), smoke bombs (combine thunderstone and smoke stick in one thrown item same price as both combined), Mwk thieves tools, sap, spiked gauntlets x 2 (his sharp things sticking out of his arms), Grapnel: (Light Crossbow + 50ft silk rope + Mwk grappling hook + 100gp to account for the “gnomish winch”) I would have loved to make it a hand crossbow, but didn’t want to waste two feats on exotics.  I just tacked on cost to the various gear to use up the gold from rich parents and still leave him with a good kit.

He made level two and I chose an alt. Option for weapon style: thrown weapon.  That gave him bonus feat of Precise Shot without needing Point Blank Shot, but I plan on adding it later.

Let me know what you think.

My son didn’t have the attention span to stay at the table for long: his cousins were in the pool, so he ended up there.  My friend always plays the Cleric, but he ran Batman as a second character and had a blast with it.

Here we are in 2015, the 40th Anniversary of Chaosium as a game company. In a few months Glorantha, Greg Stafford's fantasy game world, celebrates its Golden 50th anniversary. We feel the time is right to bring the celebrated classic second edition of RuneQuest back into print. Gaming is going through a bit of an Old School renaissance as of late, and we want RuneQuest to be a part of it. We hope you’ll join in on the fun!

      REWARDS:
The RuneQuest Hardcover Book - is 144 pages. It will have sewn binding. It contains all the 2nd edition text, but with all the errata incorporated where it belongs. Additional material has been added to the appendices at the end. If you want more than one copy of the book, add another $30 for each additional book to the level you are backing.

The RuneQuest Leatherette Hardcover Book - is 144 pages. It is in red leatherette with gold foil stamps on the front and spine. It has a color dust jacket. If you want more than one copy of the book, add another $50 for each additional book to the level you are backing.

The Player Handouts - are 20 pages of reference material for the players to use during character creation and ongoing play.

The GM Screen - is two 11 inch x 17 inch (very close to A3 paper size) color cardstock panels with handy charts and tables from the Rulebook on the GM side, and classic Luise Perrene art on the Player Side.

The Old School RQ Source Pack - consists of four of the earliest RQ1/RQ2 supplements published: Militia & Mercenaries, Scorpionmen & Broos, Trolls & Trollkin and the Balastor's Barracks scenario. Each is about 16 pages in length with a color cardstock cover. If you want more than one copy of this Source Pack, add another $50 for each additional Source Pack to the level you are backing.

The Runequest Playtest Manuscript book - is a 250+ page hardcover book created from high resolution scans of the original playtest manuscript. This manuscript is the only known set of playtest notes in existence which were lovingly kept in a binder for the last 40 years. This playtest material was used to create the first edition of RuneQuest. It includes newly written introductory essays by Steve Perrin and Greg Stafford. Here's a few pictures of the original:

The 2 volume "Unpublished Scenarios and Source Material" set - is two hardcover books with hundreds of pages of unpublished RuneQuest material by Greg Stafford and other early authors. It includes a fair bit of Sorcery rules for the West, the Howling Tower scenario set in the Upland Marsh, as well as a wide range of other material, esoteric and otherwise. We will describe it in more detail in the comments section and the FAQ. This reward is only available as part of this Kickstarter.

Into old school RPGs, love Glorantha/Runequest ?

then this one is a great choice

they seem to have fulfilled their last KS OK with minor hiccups

SITHRAH is a sci-fi about a little girl trying to find her father after their plane crashes in a unfamiliar land. That's when she starts seeing an invisible creature, called SITHRAH, who has been following her around. It's not long until she runs into a young man named Dino who is running from his own ghosts. Together they set out to find her missing father wherever the evidence leads.
Book 4 will focus on their journey across The Deep to try to find Light City.
This series will be 6 books long.
Sithrah has been a big experiment with the comic format by mixing subtle prose with comic panels. My hope is to blur the lines between comics, children's books, and novels without making it jarring for the reader.
Most of my inspiration comes from the comic artists of the 90's when I refined my drawing style. Later I became influenced by Miyazaki's movies and storytelling and have been trying to make comics that have a similar depth and feeling.
