I agree with Knarthex, I think the torch light effect needs some refinement. Not sure how...

The skulls are fantastic and just wonderful.

The snake breaking out of the stone? Love it!! I really am enjoying seeing this progress!

Thx David!

I think adding black smudges would enhance the look of the fire like Loth suggested.

Just need to figure out the right spots for that.

As a Hamster you might want to avoid getting to close to the snake though...

Hmmmmm I think the light is a touch too glossy. It is, after all, supposed to be reflecting off of stone. I also second having the streak of smoke, that will turn out very well.

On a nominally related note:

Thx Pez, I used fluo yellow...I guess I'll have to mute it and add black smoke streaks.

Very cool vid!

Excellent work on the altar!

I would add the soot marks from the torches at the point where the fire is coming off the wood. They should be roughly as wide as the flame itself.

Thx. So not too high then.

I will also dull the fluo yellow on the wall.

The area lit by the torches should be brighter than the surrounding wall; one way to check is to covert your photo to grey scale.

Thx! I'll try that.

Right now it is too bright because of the fluo yellow.

Well, yes and no. That depends on how high you want to make it.

IMO the soot/burn marks should be at least the size of the flame that produced them;  and possibly a little higher than that even.

ETA--most of the black marks are caused by the smoke rising from whatever's burning.

To dull the shine fo the fire, I used Umber, then Reaper Coal Black and I sponged Reaper Hearth Fire over it.

Also tried some GS for the Snakes.

I'm not satisfied yet with the sculpting process.

I might look for small serpents to buy.

Need more work.

The area now looks to be darker than the surrounding stone, which is opposite of how it would appear irl. You could try a wash or glaze on the rest of the stone not lit by the torches to darken the area not illuminated.

Before this, my OSL was too shiney.

I would like to light it up more, instead of darkening the rest.

Suggestions to lighten it up without getting it too shiney again?

Would glazing the lit areas with the highlight I used on the stoneworks work?

IRL it looks better, as always with pics, I'm afraid.

I think it's a matter of colours rather than making it glossy. Brightest at the center with a yellow-white light, with it becoming more yellow  the further out you go. I'm no expert by any means, but I would suggest painting the wall as normal, and then adding the torchlight with glazes, and be especially light about it if this is to be a daytime scene. Also, have you considered using actual soot for the streaks from the torches?

Also: references!

Thx @Pezler the Polychromatic  and @DocPiske

I do not want to mess it up too much.

I think I will add some more lighter yellow  and highlights that resemble the stoneworks on the edges, and a light spot in the centre as you suggest.

The scoot is made of Reaper Coal Black. Looks real enough IRL.

Real scoot would be wiped off the moment I pick the piece up..

What I forgot to mention.

I will have foliage ( vines, plants) coming down from the upper edges, so a part of these areas will be obscured with plants that cast shadow.

So I will leave a part of it darker as it is now to show that.

I hope it will look good in the end.

What I don't like is how the sculpting goes.

I will try to finish these in a reasonable way, but I'm really thinking about getting serpents.

Right now I'm leaning to purchasing a GW Bastiladon.

It can be assembled in different ways.

I can use the Arch of Sotek's snakes for my Altar, the Arch itself for other terrain pieces maybe.

And the Bastiladon in it's other version as a Ancient One.

I'm having a lot of fun making this piece.

All in all I put quite the money and the effort in it, but I think it will become a nice centrepiece for my Lost World Armies.

They will never get to see play, but they will get some nice photo sessions!

Thx again for the advice people!
