Right then. I didn't preorder anything yet because of reasons but I've figured out what I need:

1x Big Rule Book

1x All Indices

In truth, only four out of five of the army books are needed but I might as well make it a set, right? I don't play Chaos in 40k now but that could always change. I do have an idea for a Chaos Space Marine force in the works. The Renegade God would be pleased...

Anyway, I'm going with actual dead tree books so that I can play by candlelight or something even though I prefer the iPad versions. It would be cheaper, too. Well, whatever.

The good thing about getting all of the index books is that you'll have a complete set of army lists that have all been balanced against each other.

I know that there are some people whose preferred edition of WFB is sixth with the Ravenous Hordes lists for just that reason.

One of my beefs with 40K is that they have been waging war, in the far future, with mostly WW1 technology. (Well except for their guns and lasers, which have lower effective ranges than handgunners from the War of The Roses.)

Hmm, I think the scale is representative. I once figured out ground scale based on the range of a 40K autogun, and the groundscale comes in at around 1/300 scale. So you could play the game with epic scale figures if you wanted figure scale to match...

Damon.

My FLGS is having an intro/learn to play WH40k thing in a couple weeks, coincidentally it's also free RPG day. I may check it out.

Definitely check it out. If you don't like it, no big deal. If you do... welcome to the jungle ^_^!

Oh, I've played the game before, just not in a few years/editions. This is more of a 'am I going to fall down this rabbit hole again' thing...

You are a wolf.  You're supposed to catch the rabbit, not the other way around.

True. I'm just needing to determine if this is the rabbit I want to catch.

I thought the "good" Eldar...EldarFalconGravTank.jpg ...have exactly that:

292905_md-Eldar%20Falcon%20Vehicle%20Tan

Striking ^ paint ^ scheme.

Sloped armor, secondary weapon placed to allow strafing runs, control foils - in general, a vastly superior design to 'let's take a brick, put a bunch of guns on it, and add antigravitics'.

Likewise, the tau have flying tanks that are a huge improvement over... whatever the heck that Marine vehicle is supposed to be.

As opposed to 'we wanna get blowed up , real quick!'.

As for that Predator design from a while back that has an armored turret that slopes into the ring... But I do have an easier time with a ground vehicle based on early 20th C designs than I do with something that has a-grav, and a cross section like a cardboard box.

The Auld Grump - didn't have to fight the urge, game not ordered.

I'm getting the box. For industry research and work purposes, I swear. I will also be adding primaries to my Space Wolves force, purely for informational and industry research purposes. and I'm begging Michael proctor to teach me how to paint the Death Guard all gross looking.

For research.

Right then. I ordered the BRB and the Xenos I Index because the LGS (notice the lack of an "F" on that term) couldn't amend their order to GW and let me order all the Indices, giving the store more money in the process. The two items I bought were overflow stock. I have this rational fear that if I'm not up there when the store opens this Saturday, I won't get my books. I hope they hold my already bought merchandise because, if not, I'm not above getting angry in public. This wouldn't be the first time that has happened there, either. Well, the other time was a shade different than this example but it still applies.

The person I ordered from said it would be a few weeks to get in the other books for me because of the company being bogged-down and the lack of product in their warehouses. I call elf on that one. When I get my two books, I will check the website in the store and see if they are indeed sold out for the next few weeks. If they aren't, I'll return what I bought and order from GW online. I have the distinct feeling that I won't be a patron there anymore after this Saturday.

I'm sorry for the rant. It needed to get out of me.
