OK. I left 40k a long time ago, during the start of finecast. At the time, I had CSM and chaos demons.

I want to get back in, now that the company appears to be turning around, but looking at my index: Chaos, I'm not sure if Demons are a standalone army anymore. most of them have to be summoned by a character.

Thoughts?

They can be summoned in or start out on the field. They're their own army.

The place I stopped by in NH on the way home had a bunch of stuff.

My willpower started to waver but I was able to make it out without investing in anything.  I was able to ask myself "and when would you actually play this" and rolled well on my Will save.

Made my will save, using the same bonuses you did, but it was a close thing...

So I got my stuff. I'm still not sold on Primaris SMs, & never liked Nurgle, so no boxed set for me. Instead I got the rulebook and ALL 5 Indicies. Yes, some of these will be made "obsolete" over time, but I'm betting Imperial Agents section won't be for a lo-ong time (if ever, it's the one with the Sisters of Battle). Also all 5 are good to have to get an idea what the "other" side is bringing to the table...

Also noticed that regular SMs can now field Contemptor dreadnaughts. I feel a Forgeworld order coming on for a Raven Guard Contemptor...

Damon.

If reviews are generally positive, I'll probably pick up a copy of the rulebook for posterity, and for comparison to other games. I hope people are enjoying their early games.

A few things are wonky (eg, Flamers being able to target Flyers) but that's to be expected with a new ruleset. Nothing I've found is a game-breaker, though. I'm still waiting on my Indices to get here tomorrow but I have the rulebook and it does a good job of explaining things to old hands and newbies alike. If you're interested, there's a free, 12 page PDF of the main rules on GW's website. The BRB goes into more detail and adds rules not found in the PDF.

I'd get it but, then again, what do I know?

Tip: when assembling the Primaris Ancient, drill the bolt rifle barrel before attaching the arm and especially before gluing to the base. The downward angle of the rifle makes it difficult to do so afterwards. Thankfully my intial attachment did not bond well and I was able to get the barrel.

Tip: Inceptors are too complex - or too three-dimensional, to be more accurate - of a model to paint fully assembled. Assemble the jet-pack, paint, assemble the Marine, paint. Do not try to do this once fully assembled - there will be nooks and crannies almost impossible to access.

Mildly curious.

Interesting these 'free' rules are are 3x the length of the 'free' fantasy rules.

I find this applies to a lot of their recent minis.

For anyone new to their stuff, or coming back after a few years, I'd suggest dry-fitting everything first to make sure you'll actually be able to paint it.

Picked up a second hand squad of neophyte hybrids for my Genestealer Cult army (just assembled and primed), a friend of mine has a Leman Russ that I can have, and I'm about to get a hold of some aberrants.

So far that gives me a magus, 40 neophytes, 20 purestrains, 2 Leman Russ tanks and 4 aberrants.

For those who have the rules and codexs, are chaos cult forces doable in this edition? I have 60+ Khorne Berzerkers and an assortment of Khorne dogs and beastmen/bloodletters. Can I still use them?

I don't have the Chaos index, but have seen videos of games on YouTube with Khorne Berzerkers and Khorne Dogs, and I'm pretty certain Bloodletters are still in.

You can field an all Khorne list, I can't speak to the viability as I haven't played as Chaos.  I did however watch a video in which the remains of a Berzerker squad (which amounted to three or four models after walking across the board under concentrated fire) pretty much obliterate three squads and several characters of the IG.
