So here's a question I've had for a while. I bought some 40k figures in a brown paper bag from a friend back in high school. That was 20 years ago. Are they still good for anything? Is my Wraithlord, which seems to be about half the size of the current Wraithlord figure, usable in the new regime?

No. They are worthless, and you should send them to me for proper disposal.

(NOT TRUE!)

Those minis are probably still fine, in terms of "can you deploy them on a battlefield" - they may look a little weird if you use a mixed force of new and old (depending on exactly what - most infantry will be about the same scale, but some of the other stuff has gotten significantly larger), but nobody should say anything along the lines of "you can't use those!" - they should still be legal, as long as the weapon loadout still is. You're more likely to get "Awww, he got the <strikethrough>Velcros</strikethrough> Old Schools" than anything else - there's a lot of players who have played through since Rogue Trader, and are still using stuff like old peanut Dreadnoughts, and the like.

I love my old school chaos dreadnought! Except when it goes crazy and drops a plasma cannon shot directly on my HQ....

I think probably OK - maybe need to upgrade to a larger base to match the current state (not through the 8th edition rules yet so unsure if they are a stickler about base sizes....) Though if your mini seems dramatically smaller than the current Wraithlord, I am wondering if maybe what you have is the smaller Wraithguard instead?

I think I saw some new version of squats at a store.  Can't remember what they were called but they sure looked like space dwarves.

I think those are the Age of Sigmar dwarves... But they are very squat like.

Very steam punk squat like!

Squats are indicate in the current fluff, but are not supported by the rules.

I am led to believe there is an issue with ownership of the IP, and that GW's legal ownership of the squats as we know them is murky at best and nonexistent at worse.

There was a legal issue with GW's ownership of the Chaos god Malal, so they cannot use that particular character. The old story about squats is that when 2e rolled around, they got their own army list, but when it came around to updating the army & giving them new stuff & a fleshed out list, no one knew or wanted to do anything with them, so they were dropped. I'm personally not bothered about it, since I never liked the models or the "feel" that was developed around them, so I don't miss them at all...

Damon.

Some of the reasons for that is because 40k has complexity not present in fantasy - mostly transports and Flyers.

Or possibly some different reasons [?] fantasy has always had flyers. And the new rendition of it has introduced transports:

Whatever else ^ this crate ^ is; it can dump out a squad of bearded-things. Note the door on the side. (Photograph taken at a store equally far from you or me.)

Could they have been Mantic's space dwarves for their Warpath game?

I think they're called 'Forge Fathers'...

wow - that dwarf airship thing is something else... I am not totally on board with the aesthetics of the GW AoS line, but I have to give credit that is a really amazing model there; spendy, but it looks like you could put many, many hours of good fun painting time into it and result out a masterpiece....
