I use the "6 Step Eye Method". Or try to. http://www.arcanepaintworks.com/blog-1/2016/6/9/6-step-eyes

Some eyes are way easier (larger) than others and you can get the 6 steps in, others, not so much.

These days I'm entirely painting chibi figures, but I mostly use this technique adapted slightly to fit the chibi style.  In step 3, instead of painting black, I will mostly use a darker shade of the final eye color with brighter shades to form the bottom and center of the eye.  This is a slight adaptation of steps 3 and 4.  I've also now begun only using black lining around the top and bottom of eyes, but again that's because of the chibi style.

When I took Derek's expressive faces class it was like a little lightbulb flashing in my head.  I watched him paint and he doesn't try to do each step of the eye in one fell swoop.  He thins his paint and touches down, pauses, adds more and slowly builds up each step of the eyes.  here's a link to his process while I'm at it.

But it doesn't have to be perfect with the first brushstroke.  Less is more!  I was always trying to get the pupil done with one stroke- it's actually harder to do and much easier to do tiny dots to make up the whole.  Not sure if that helps...

I just had a super frustrating bout of eye painting troubles on a mini tonight. I ruined the darn thing after multiple attempts to paint eyes.  I am glad I decided to try the eyes early in the process, I had only done a base coat for the skin before I tried the eyes. I am a little sad, I hope I have not ruined the mini.  I am giving it a bath in the Simple Green, so hopefully it will be salvageable.  And I am only doing that because I really, really, really , really killed the mini. From now on, I do eyes before anything else.

Adding to Corporea's comments:

Take Derek's Method

And do it to this mini:

You will have a good grasp of eyes by the end of it. (It may seem like I am tongue-in-cheeking you here, but I am in fact being very serious.) The nice thing about this model is that most of the eyes are larger than human eyes, so if you work largest to smallest, you will build the technique and brush control necessary to master human eyes.

I always do my eyes early, often first.  Then the rest of the mini become easier and less stressful!

Sympathy!!  Hang in there!

Doing the eyes first.

WHY do I keep forgetting something that obvious?

Reason: because I had that totally awesome color scheme I wanted to try... right now! *Then* came the eyes. And the stray stroke. And trying to fix it. And making things worse. :zombie: Specifically, I was doing the Mousling Princess. Lots of fur around those eyes. Eventually, she'll be getting the Simple Green overnight dunk.

One should always approach a mini inside out. That is start with the deepest items (like eyes) and work outward.  That way you will avoid ruining things already painted. I know Derek's tutorial doesn't say to do this, but then he's Derek; for us mortals, we need to take a slightly different tack.

I bought one of these for exactly this purpose, I've yet to even take it out of the blister pack. Hoping to remedy that before Bones III gets here.

Pfft, that stuff's overrated. I've gotten along juuust fine without mine for quite awhile now.

@TaleSpinner your suggestion sounds both awesome and fun! I'd never considered doing the full 7 step method on each one, though. Well, I guess 6 in this case, since there aren't eyebrows to worry about.

Huzzah!

I'd start worrying if it were fake eyelashes.

Then again, if a lady faceless horror has a hot date tonight with an eldritch abomination... :wow:+:;,;:=

[Now where'd my sanity go? I had it a moment ago, just before I started screaming.]

The faceless is actually a VERY good mini, because you don't have to worry about the eyes all pointing in the same direction!

Reaper also has some other Lovecraft figures to practice eyes with. Although advanced, the shoggoth eyeball is great practice to understand how an iris looks. I've used it on other mythos figures with big eyes. Pic by hiveminer.

I haven't had to do it for a while, but I found that if I ever screwed up an eye and yet still wanted to continue, I could often scrape the paint off the defective eye, reprime, cover again in walnut brown, and try the eye again without having to actually give up and give the figure a Pinesol bath.

The problem after too many attempts on a single eye for me was the paint began to build up and after a certain point the surface became kind of deformed.
