77362: Angels of Sorrow 1/2

This is the 2nd figure that I finished coming out of my hiatus. My goal with her was to do extreme on source lighting, imagining an adventurer going into a totally dark room with a flashlight shining on her.

As a weeping angel, I thought it would be neat to make her shielding herself from the light, but awake on the side where it is dark. The photos sortof capture her red eye. Not canon with Dr. Who, but I thought it was a liberty worth taking.

I also tried to make the statue look like she's made out of marble, but honestly, I don't know if she's light or dark marble due to the lighting! Which considering how bright a dark but reflective surface can be, is okay with me.

Mostly, the figure was a fun little experiment.

Thanks Xherman! Not sure how successful I was, but it was a fun one to paint. Eventually I'd like to stick her in a diorama sort of thing with the second angel, and a figure with some sort of light source. There is a Sherlock figure that has a lantern on him, but I am not thrilled with the rest of him. Might have to go for a mage with a super bright gem on the staff + more OSL.

Love the red eye.

And I think you were pretty successful. The bits that catch my eye is the harsh line on her arm, I would think it would be more gradual of a fade over the curvature of her arm. And then I would expect a few more lighter areas on the folds of her robes on 'the dark' side of her robes.

Have you tried putting her (or any other object) in a darkish room, and shining a light on her from the direction you want the light to come, and looking to see what bits light up or not? (Taking notes with a quick sketch can help... even if you can't sketch!) That helps me sometimes when I am trying to figure out how the light would play across a figure.

Thanks Thes Hunter,

In the photos it is hard to tell what is a harsh area, and what is washed out. I need to work on exposure and set-up. But I do generally agree with you; I could work on some of the "dark" areas. It is hard to balance with the idea of her being in a dark room.

I did play with shining a flashlight on her a bit, might need to work with it a bit more before trying the next. All I need to do to test a dark room is swirling my chair away from the paint table because my house is so poorly lit, lol. The next one will be back-lit instead, because she has "rawr scary ima gunna bite you" posture. I can test the method again then. Thanks for the sketching idea too. Might even see about the flashlight, then a dab of thin paint around transition areas to kinda give it a schematic on-figure.
