Maredudd
I'm looking forward to Bones IV . . . Figured I'd make a post that was relevant to the thread topic . . .
Cranky Dog
A serious question: In Bones 1-2-3, we've had several types of Bones sculpts: - Metal to Bones conversions - Re-sculpts of existing minis. Either older models that have been retired or that will take advantage of the Bones material properties. - Totally new sculpts. Some that are part of a theme, others by popular demand from posters. Is Bones IV expected to have the same pattern? Are you leaning towards more new sculpts or conversions? Too soon to tell? I remember that you guys had Bones 3 plans that went beyond the scope of the campaign total. Are these non-revealed models expected to appear in Bones IV, or is a big list of "It depends"? I'm really curious about how much of the existing (metal) catalog is still considered viable for conversion to Bones (whether due to limited appeal, incompatibility with the change in material, or other reasons). How does converting a figure from metal to Bones compare to simply having a new figure sculpted? sirgourls
From the preview images, it seemed like there was a big focus on completely new sculpts. Or at least, I don't recall having seen those minis available in metal before (I could be completely off-base there of course), with few exceptions. Granted, it was a teaser sampling, so who knows. I'll just be eager to see what else we might get peeks at prior to the launch of the Kickstarter, if anything. And, of course, what is in the core set before it explodes with stretch goals (and what it inevitably winds up to be).
Lorathorn
Huh... I never thought of it that way. Now I am going to rethink future purchases. How do you guys feel about the giant sized bones, though? Giants, dragons, etc. Does the price difference make it worth it to get bones, or are the metals still better?
Moderator Chaoswolf Posted December 1, 2016 Moderator Share Posted December 1, 2016 I'm all about Bones for the big stuff (giants, dragons, etc)! The detail carries over quite nicely on the bigger pieces, IMO. I'm definitely a fan of being able to get lots of dragons for not too much money (comparatively).
Smokestack
The big stuff is what makes Bones great. The giants. One bones giant is like $8.99 and the same giant in metal was around $24.99. Same with dragons. The big stuff is sturdier and the detail is great. Being able to field 10 giants or being able to choose from 20 dragons in my collection would not have been possible in all metal. At least not for me. Also the weight of the 10 giants would make lugging them to my Friday night game a real chore. I have 12 bug bears. Even those 12 bug bears would have been quite costly in metal... Bones are also good at convincing my non mini gamer friends to have minis. At the start of all our campaigns I bring my bones box and let people pick a mini for their characters. Lately though some of them have started ordering minis... the bones being like a gateway drug. And at the cost I don't feel put upon when I give minis away to my friends. Its like sure, help yourself... BONES IS THE FUTURE!!!! I will gladly support any future Bones Kickstarter... and have backed all 3 of the ones so far.
DixonGrfx
Painting a large metal mini can be physically taxing. The weight can cause fatigue while painting. BONES are much lighter, but even they can be tiring on the biggest stuff. I don't even want to contemplate how heavy Khanjira would be in metal.

The big miniatures are the sweet point for bones and PVC miniatures generally, because the loss of tiny detail doesn't matter as much, and the price savings are very, very substantial. A Reaper Frost giant is 9 bucks, whereas a stonehaven resin giant is twice that, and in metal it would be three times that. The bigger the mini the relatively better bones is. In Australia a GW Dragon is literally half the size of Khaladax while costing significantly more. Not just that, but even the prep work is a pain in the butt. For metal figures, that can be a good deal of grinding (depending on how bad the mold lines are), plus large figures almost always need pinning. I'd go so far to say that if someone only got large figures in Bones, they'd still be doing themselves a huge favor.

Here is the most surprising thing that I found about BONES. After receiving my rewards from KS1, I gained a great measure of painting boldness. Grab a hero figure, or villain, and just go to town without the fear of a sub par paint job on a $8 metal figure. I mean, the KS value was something stupid like $.35 a figure (not sure). And if it went wrong and I needed to buy a replacement, $3 is not unreasonable. Not every single figure you paint HAS TO BE a competition level paint job. I really can't tell you how liberating it is to have a mountain of cheap figures to dig through when you just need to sling some paint. Or said mountain is great for just rummaging through for the fun of it. Or letting someone else dig through it and get excited discovering fun figures that they want to paint or use.

cycnet
Oh wow, just found out about this. I find the Baba Yaga's hut to be very tempting... but last KS I talked myself out of the bigger terrain pieces because I recently moved into a smaller house, and finding a place for these big things is tough. That said, I just bought a Kalastrax today so... Last KS I said I wouldn't get the core set and would spend less than KS2 and actually spent more... so I am not going to predict how much I will spend or not spend. I am looking forward to it, though I hope I do a bit better on my will save this time. I'll definitely back for something! Probably too much.
