Cthulhu Wars Onslaught 3 is likely June or July also. All of those are likely to hit my wallet hard.

Hadn't heard about a new Cthulhu Wars KS.  I pledged big on the first two and am likely to do the same again.  Still waiting to see more from Bones 4 as the handful of minis we've seen so far are not grabbing me.

I think Reaper have expressed more of an interest in making new dragons than redoing metal ones in Bones.

I would much prefer this, because the pewter dragons are so very stiff in pose and with the flat wings while the Bomes ones have much more dynamic and expressive poses (think deathsleet vs Narthrax)

As I mentioned in my inaugural  post here on these forums, I painted my first ever bones mini (first ever mini period, actually) at Reaper's paint and take at PaizoCon a few weeks ago and had a blast! The mini turned out pretty well too, and now I'm addicted and want to jump in to the hobby:)

You can sometimes find good deals on the evil bay of auctions if you're careful, look around, and keep looking.  I lucked out and got some painter (he seems pretty good) who was downsizing and sold me (more or less) his rewards from the first Bones kickstarter - he'd gotten a lot too.  (and painted a few of them, which is why I think he seems pretty good.)  Similarly for paints - keep an eye out for deals.

That said, the "Learn to Paint" kids are a good idea as well.

Excellent point on the long wait time - I hadn't thought about that!

I'll take a look at the Learn to Paint kits!

Yeah you might want to throw some money at the KS but I would save the money and just get yourself started in the hobby.

LTPK seem really popular and are highly recommended.  I have never bought one but think they are probably a good investment because of all the praise they get around here.

The Bay of e is a great place to really get some bang for your buck.  For instance I bought Dragons Don't Share 2 for $30 and a set of 50 Reaper paints for $60.  Retail it would be closer to $200.

Make sure you are getting a deal though, set a limit and stick to it.  If you are going to pay retail anyways might as well give your money directly to Reaper and get free shipping and the free monthly mini.

Also right now I have seen some of the earlier Bones selling for good prices since everyone is focused on the Bones III stuff that is up there now.

As another novice painter, I can confirm that the LTPKs are great.  I bought the Bones LTPK 2 last year and it really did help, came with good instructions, three minis and a nice selection of paints.  IIRC the kit sells for less than the cost of the paints at retail, so the minis, brushes, and instructions are just gravy.  I skipped the first Bones LTPK simply because I already had most of the colors in it, but the old LTPKs (before Bones) were pretty decent too.  I would recommend picking up both of the Bones ones if you have the money.  The first kit will teach you some basics and then the second one gets into layering.  I'm still not particularly good at blending my layers (lack of patience being my biggest downfall) but even just using the techniques in the kit really improved the look of my minis.

All that said, you will no doubt be able to get a good deal through the Bones IV KS, but its just a matter of a) how much money do you have to spend at the moment and b) are you willing to wait to get that haul?  If you have plenty of money available to both buy into the KS and get started on other minis, then knock yourself out.  But buying into the KS and then not being able to paint anything else for a few months while you save your money back up may be counter productive.

Assuming Reaper repeats their previous practices, one thing to remember about Bones KS (*disclaimer*: this is Reaper specific, and not a general practice for KS), is that once you pledged any amount of money, you'll have access to the pledge manager *after* the campaign has ended. For several weeks/months afterwards, you can gradually add some money to your order over a period of time until Reaper locks in and finalizes the orders. You'll get plenty of announcements that it's coming. This allows hard core fans to spread their budget expenses into manageable sizes.

Also be aware, that for each time you think you spent too much on Bones, you'll have just as many regrets at not getting enough of them.

As for Bay of E. I shouldn't have been surprised to have seen Bones 3 stuff already popping up there so soon. What was shocking was the prices some people were asking. True most of them won't see retail for a long time (up to a year later), but some of those deals just... aren't (beware shipping costs).

Re:  Bones 4, the site book for Origins has an advert stating "Summer 2017". Take what you will from that.

I'm taking away that Reaper will have time to regain some sanity.

Also, more time to get new sculpts ideas in.
