While I fully support the goals of better wages and fairer practices, etc., the end result is much higher costs here in the States than in China. Even without a labor movement, and even if western society collapsed to the point where the cost of living was reduced to be equivalent to that of China (so, all things equal-ish), it wouldn't matter a bit. There are 1.388 *billion* Chinese; for every american there are almost 4.35 Chinese people. There is simply no way to beat that kind of labor market advantage. Previously, shipping was a more limiting factor, but these days (with advancements in infrastructure and technology), those costs are easily offset by the reduced cost of production for most manufacturing. As we go towards increasingly automated systems even the Chinese manufacturing jobs will start to dry up. There is no going back, the people of earth have simply gotten too populous and too efficient at making things for manufacturing to be a long term sustainable employment sector for the masses. heck, even agriculture in the US is becoming automated with drone tractors and other machinery. It is what it is, and short of China becoming an enemy state (which would be disastrous) they will remain our largest trading partner for the foreseeable future. Technology marches on, and it is the driving force behind globalization, commerce, and economics at nearly every level. The more we innovate, the less we need human hands for work. I'm happy to support our homegrown Reaper Miniatures. I enjoy their metal and resin lines and Bones are great too. I cant begrudge them for making the obvious manufacturing choice. Edit. Disclaimer: This is just my opinion based on my crude understanding of market forces in a vacuum. don't take it as fact or as an incitement. Global economics is not my field of expertise. Erk
I try to be ethical with my purchases as much as I can, which includes avoiding unnecessary stuff, especially plastic made in china stuff. The thing with miniatures is that they're totally niche, and let's face it, fundamentally useless. Yes, I use them a lot, but I use them for nothing important. I could play d&d on a sandtable with coloured rocks and we'd have as much fun. So I've exempted them from my usually careful sourcing patterns and just recognized that where gaming is concerned i don't behave rationally.

We decided on Tuesday afternoon to go for Wednesday/Thursday to check out the convention for the first time. We caught up with the Reaper crew, played some new games and were really glad we went. The Origins program book held a couple of… interesting tidbits. The first and most obvious was this full-page ad by Reaper: But the second is arguably more interesting. Julie Guthrie was one of the convention's guests of honour and her description in the program book included this interesting photo (enhancement by me): Now, it might just be the angle, or my memory failing me, but that looks like a new, giant dragon by my favourite dragon sculptor. Thoughts? Feeling? Wild speculation? Go. So am I mistaken, or was that in fact a preview picture of the Zombie Dragon?! And we didn't even know it! :) Edited July 7, 2017 by Chris Palmer
