Thanks, guys! I'll definitely have at least a small update tonight, as I'd started laying down a basecoat on the scales after my Brown Liner touch up was dry.

I'm not really sure what I'm doing with the colour scheme yet, as usual, but I do have an overall vision in mind, so we'll see.

Leaving it here for this evening. Got a lot of gaps to fill that are going to require me putting her together much sooner than I would normal put a big beastie together, so I'm going to block in basecoats and maybe paint the parts that won't be affected first.

Thought for you...

put pins in the parts so that they fit where you want, then put vaseline on the wing, for example and sculpt the putty on the body and sculpt a "base coat" when it cures take the pieces apart, wash everything, and then you can sculpt the details over the base coat.

Do this for all the separate bits that have bad gaps.

I have not tried this yet, wish I thought of it before I started on Nathavarr, and I plan on it for Knarthex when I get to him.....

It has been discussed around here before though.....

I like how you're using the word "sculpt" as though I'm capable of doing anything more than smooshing green stuff into places. ::P:

Hey, If I can sculpt Intellect devourers out of cat bodies, I am sure you can sculpt some scales!!!!

Will be following this closely, still building up courage to tackle my own nethyrmaul.  :)

I'm not going to lie, I was very intimidated by her. It's kind of hard at first to understand exactly what's going on with her and thus it can be a little paralyzing. So what I did to combat that is I stared at her for a little while and pictured in my head around what I wanted her to look like. I very rarely plan out a colour scheme before I start painting, but in this case, I really think that it would help. So I got a general idea in my head - I wanted her scales to be turquoise/teal (it's honestly my go to colour and I've just accepted that - no colour makes me as happy to paint as a nice turquoise/teal) and I want her belly plates and details to be gold-ish because gold looks very nice with turquoise/teal. I decided on purple for the wings and fleshy bits because it also works well with those colours and also because purple is a good bruised/rotting flesh colour. Finally, I knew that I wanted the muscles showing through to be red and later on there will be some green added (although I might have to play around with the hue of that to make sure it goes with everything else.)

So, once I had a basic colour scheme worked out in my head, I started slopping on the basecoats to get those colours in their general areas. I was mostly careful about the placement of the turquoise and then I was careful not to go over the turquoise... but otherwise, the purple is just slopped on there, as is the goldish brown.

It wasn't until I started laying in the brownish red that the details really started making sense to me.

Anyway, I just thought that insight might be useful to you. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to be really detailed with any steps that I think might be useful.

That's a whole lot of faith you're putting in me there, George. ::P:

Oh I'm sure I'll have questions when the time comes!  For me, its been more of a "I'm just starting out on this fantastic painting odyssey" than anything.  I'm convincing myself that I should be building myself up to the bigger and cooler models (even though I'm sure there's an argument to be made that a larger model in some respects is easier to paint than a smaller one).  This is coupled with the desire to get stuff painted for the Pathfinder game I'm running and for my WMH army(ies) which often leaves little time left over.  I will soon be starting my first "big" mini though -- the Bones Hydra as that will be coming up soon in the PF game (plus I have a second Hydra mini, so bonus!).  After that, Nethy might be the next "big" mini on my list.  :)

For sure an argument can be made for larger models being "easier", but they're not without their own challenges. However, I think that a lot of times the biggest challenge with large models is the intimidation factor, especially if it's a large model that you spent a fair amount of money on. So I think that working your way up is a pretty good idea as going beyond your comfort level can unfortunately lead to putting stuff on the shelf of shame.

You'll get there!
