After a middling effort with Dain Deepaxe, I was pretty pleased with how this guy turned out. I tried a couple new techniques that I haven't done before: I wanted to make his eyes appear like they were glowing, I wanted to get a smooth gradation on the cape, and I wanted to try some TMM-type shading on the axe blade. 

 

I think I did okay on the eyes, but not so well on the other two. First of all, I haven't found a good tutorial for TMM anywhere, so if anyone knows a good one, please do point me in the right direction. As far as the cape, I attempted using glazes; when that didn't work, I tried two-brush blending. I think I mostly didn't succeed. That doesn't bother me, but if anyone has any tips for what I did wrong, I'd welcome some C&C!

I hate to show off my ignorance so blatantly ... but what is "TMM"?  I've heard of NMM (non-metallic metals) but I couldn't figure out the magic keywords to find a relevant definition for TMM.  (Hmm.  I tried searching "TMM" on this forum ... but it gives me zero hits -- not even this post.  So maybe I'm just not using "search" correctly.)

 

Anyway, I really like the red-to-darker gradient on the back of the cape, and it's a very interesting effect for the eye-sockets/helmet.  (I'd usually expect to try that contrasting against BLACK armor, for maximum contrast, but it looks like it's working nicely on mid-tone greys as well.)

TMM is usually "true metallic metals", which is a back-formation from NMM. The idea is to use metallic paints but to add more contrast by using various metallic colors or shades for the highlight and shadow areas of the metal rather than trusting to the metallic paint to handle that. (It doesn't, really.)

Thanks! And yeah, I was thinking I'd like to try out True Metallic Metals as opposed to NMM because it's generally thought of as easier, and I also think it might be better suited for the 3-dimensional medium of miniature painting than NMM is.

Mmmm...not really easier. Maybe faster to get a passable effect, but done right the steps for TMM are very similar to NMM/high contrast painting  (except maybe with heavier emphasis on washes and color).
