In what sounds like a plotline from the World of Darkness, an aggressive mother brown bear has caused Castle Poenari, used in its time by Vlad "Dracula" Tepes, to be declared off limits to tourists until her cubs are grown.

Quote

Romanian authorities have declared Poenari castle off limits after visitors climbing the 1,480 steps up to the ruins had close shaves with the animal and her three cubs.

<snip>

Poenari Castle was used by Prince Vlad the Impaler Tepes, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic novel “Dracula”. The bigger tourist attraction however is Bran Castle in Transylvania, which has tangential associations with Vlad the Impaler.

In 2014 a senior politician from the Transylvanian region called for the army to be brought in to deal with the growing number of bears, following a string of cases involving damage to private property.

Called for the army in 2014?! I hope the bears reserved the right to have arms. Get it? The right to bear arms? No one :unsure:?

But really, bears are deadly and I hope no one got hurt. Although it would be neat to see a Romanian soldier take on a bear in hand-to-hand combat. The bear would probably refuse whilst cleaning his monocle because he's actually a pacifist after the years he spent fighting his fellow ursine brothers. I figure the soldier would respect that with a slight nod, his face a stoic picture of calm. After that, the bear army would sign a treaty ending all hostilities - except in Siberia because, hey, you have to do something in the freezing tundra of the steppe.

Wow. I went places just then.

Well now I'm curious what kind of bears they have there.

Heck, most of Western and Northern Canada would be closed if "Bears be thar" were a reason to close things.

We have black bears all around here in North Carolina, they aren't usually a problem though. My Step brother did have one steal his bird feeder and the bracket it was hung off the side of his house on in Charlottesville, VA a month or three ago, he still hasn't found it.

There's "there" and "There". If you have a mama Griz and her cubs on your porch, I suspect your response would be different than if there's a mama black bear over on the edge of the west field.

Brown bears (I googled).  I guess they have a pretty sizable population of them, too.

I didn't see anything about black bears, so I'm assuming those are few and far between.

And I also learned what many hunters like to take as a trophy from a bear hunt (according to tradition).  You don't want to know.  Guys can feel free to cross their legs now.

 We've actually received warnings about the increase in bear encounters here in CT.

(Incidentally, I also haven't been bothering to shave recently. I can't guarantee that the two aren't related.)

Apparently, the majority of the bears in Romania are browns...
