My husband is running a game of more-or-less-Exalted (2nd ed.) set in the more-or-less World of Darkness (2nd ed.) ("But rather less than more," as W.S. Gilbert wrote -- it has been given the complete Neil Gaiman-Alan Moore historico-mythological treatment, about which I can expound elsewhere and another time, 'cos it's a really fun game).

 

One of the PCs is playing a mage of the Sons of Ether who has taken to proffering therapy to would-be reformed werewolves and vampires, who Exalted as a solar of the Twilight caste.

 

If this means nothing to you, don't worry about it.  He's a modern-day Scottish mage who has suddenly gotten an infusion of even more magey power.

 

This is my standard starting point, the mini glued to a base, primed white, and washed with Burnt Umber.

He's meant to be a rather pale redhead Scot.  My go-to mix for basic Caucasian skin begins with a simple blend of Titanium White and Burnt Sienna.  Believe it or not, this is a thin wash of a translucent pale flesh tone.

 

 

I find skin tends to look awful until it doesn't.  This is building up tones, still with a simple mixture of Burnt Sienna and white .

 

 

Once I have the contours I want on the face I added color with bits of Quinacridone Crimson and Red Iron Oxide.  He's quite pale, so I didn't add any golden tones.  I also loosely laid in red hair since I was doing his eyebrows anyway.  It's been a while since I mixed it, but I believe it was a blend of Red Iron Oxide, Yellow Ochre, and Burnt Umber.

His suit and overcoat were going to be cool dark colors, so I laid in a transparent base coat of Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber.  This makes quite an intense cold dark.  I find it a little less versatile than my favorite dark transparent shadow mix, Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna, but it's really good for this purpose.

 

 

 

I mixed a vivid medium blue with Ultramarine Blue, a touch of Burnt Sienna, and a little bit of Titanium White and laid in some color on his suit, as well as an underpainting of his white shirt.  I painted his tie pure Red Iron Oxide.

 

 

Swashed a little blue-white on his shirt ...

 

 

... and a sort of dull buff mixed from Titanium White and Burnt Umber onto his coat lining.

I took some Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna and washed it over his base.

 

 

I then mixed that with Titanium White and swished grey onto the ground under his feet (no separate photo).

 

Then I mixed a lovely dull mauve from Ultramarine Blue and Red Iron Oxide with a touch of Titanium White and started laying lights onto his overcoat and gloves.

 

 

 

Some more lights with a bit more blue in the mix.

 

 

 

I mixed a few semi-translucent yellows from Yellow Oxide, Hansa Yellow Opaque, and Titanium White and painted his buttons and watch chain, added highlights to his hair, and added some gold to his coat lining.

A whole bunch of noodling about.  Glazes of clear violet (mixed from Ultramarine Blue and Quinacridone Crimson) on his coat, shadows in his hair, etc.  Soft dull blue lights on the creases on his trousers.  More black on the card in his hand. 

 

 

 

And I think he's close to done.  The coat lining is a bit sloppy.  I went over it with a warm reddish buff with a bit of Red Iron Oside in it, I think.  I made his hair and eyebrows more gingery and put a few more, paler highlights on his face.  Shined up his shoes.
