IIRC, Fenris Games was the sculptor for the first KS, but not the second. Richard Luong (sp) left CW.

I thought Fenris did the second one too. They sell resin copies of the minis from OS2 on their site.

Speaking of the minis, the Opener cultist is getting a ton of backlash for being sexualized (well, a very loud minority - primarily two people).

Hey, you can't have enough strippers in firefighter outfits.

At least for the HPL stories, descriptions of monsters, cultists, etc. were vague and often non-existent, with most entities only mentioned in passing. On top of this, many mythos dieties were worshiped by very different cultist groups, suggesting that you would either need multiple sculpts for a faction's cultists, or that most cults would be transient, anyway, so most canon cults (not to mention possibly even the human race) would have been gone or wiped out by the time Cthulhu Wars starts. I read that Sandy Petersen discusses the concept art with the artist, and, as one of the creators of the Call of Cthulhu RPG, so I guess his contribution to the mythos is as legitimate as any other mythos story writer. AFAIK, CW is a post-apoc game, and there *are* post-apoc Cthulhu stories and game material, such as the Yellow Dawn RPG, that has been published, but they're obviously not considered canon by mythos readers.

I am headed to a local Con tomorrow and Sunday. Going to get in at least two games of Cthulhu Wars and going to make at least one of them be the Shaggai map. Should be fun!

Less than 8 hours!

CthulhuWars.com directed to the preview page before they took it down to edit stuff. I think it should redirect there again tomorrow.

I ran a demo game on the playtest Shaggai map last night with the new Cthulhu Faction updates. I love this map!

DIRE AZATHOTH?!

So... we had the idea last week, to add a new really neat thing to the campaign, based on your feedback. Everyone loved Dire Cthulhu. SO... I started brooding on Dire Azathoth. Why? Well, even as I was concerned that our former Cthulhu was so svelte, I was never fully happy with our Azathoth. For me (I realize this is subjective) Azathoth was one of our weaker Great Old One designs. He looks a little too much like a fatter Nyarlathotep, or maybe an interstellar starfish. He certainly doesn't (to me) seem to be literally the most terrifying entity in the universe. So a new Azathoth seemed like a good idea, IF we could fund it. Since it would be a large, detailed, and expensive figure, this was tough to figure out.

Anyway, this week Kent Hamilton (our Onslaught 3 artist) was visiting me – (we were actually discussing a future project), and I broached the subject of Dire Azathoth to him. He loved it and we started beating our brains out on what this entity should look like. He has already begun! We have a sculptor lined up (one of our best) and we are going to have this puppy put together and good to go by the end of the campaign (because we don't want to violate our China-ready ideal).

Anyway, we are really proud of what this looks like, and I'm excited to improve upon a sculpt that now might be an "earlier stage" of Azathoth's development. However, Petersen Games has a confession to make. We did not plan for, nor allow for, the construction of this impressive new model (it's big, too – one of my issues with the old Azathoth model was that it was only middling in size). So how could we handle the cost? It became even harder, because we had just made the decision to add the gigantic $30 6-8 Player Shaggai map to most pledge levels (Yothan, Hound of Tindalos and Great Old One), unexpectedly. Again this was done at your feedback. You the backers talked us into it. But it takes a bite out of our budget. Don't get me wrong – I'm not complaining, and we were happy to make y'all happy. But it was an unforeseen part of the campaign.

It turns out that the only way we can do Dire Azathoth is if it is an add-on, instead of a stretch goal. So, it is NOT included in anyone's pledge. To get the new Dire Azathoth, just increase the amount of your pledge by $15.

The good news is this. We were able to discount it significantly from the eventual retail price. (Thus, we're only charging $15 for it instead of $25.) Yes this cuts into our bottom line, but you're worth it. The other good news is that since it's NOT a stretch goal, we don't have to wait for it to fund. We can make it available right away! That's exciting to me, at least.

WATCH DIRE AZATHOTH'S BIRTH

The other good news is that you can watch Kent Hamilton create this masterwork as he does it. He may even be streaming his creative process at some point. If so, we'll keep you posted!

Maybe I'm feeling a little grumpy but I don't understand why he's second-guessing himself so much.  Cthulhu too svelte?  Azathoth isn't big enough? (he looks massive to me and holds his own next to the other GOOS).

Plus that update (#11) where he has changed how many points it takes for Cthulhu to use Dreams?

1) It no longer costs Power to Emerge after a Submerge.

2) Dreams now costs 2 Power instead of 3.

I have no problem with these changes and think they make sense but I don't know why he took so long to make this decision.

I am also not confident about their shipping estimates.  They sound the same as they previous (useless) shipping estimates.

I am heavily invested in this game, so perhaps that's why this stuff rubs me the wrong way.

OS2 breathed more interest into the game. They have a larger playtest group and a demo group now. Many more games are being played and people are vocal.

A general statement is that their (The Petersen's) table plays more aggressively than many other tables...especially new(ish) players. This is also why I am anticipating a nerf of Tcho Tchos. They are not out of balance at the Petersen table. They dominate in a game full of timid newbies. (My guess is when playing with HP they don't get a freebie, and that heirophants on gives a HP for each gate that you control with a HP in same zone).

As for the Azathoth model, that has been a constant complaint and I honestly think they haven't had a chance to update with new sculpts until this KS.

It isn't any single thing that sort of rubbed me the wrong way.  I agree that tweaking was needed, especially for new players dealing with so much stuff.

If he said "hey we have a new alternate sculpt for you completionists!" that would be fine.  Instead he says, "I never really liked the one I sold you in the first place" (my paraphrase).

It puts a bad taste in my mouth, and talk like that feels like bad faith, both with his previous designers (who are frankly amazing and in my opinion, better than his current designer) and his backers.  It reminds me, unfortunately, of how he blamed Panda games for the delays on KS1 and then, when this got spread all over the internet, realized how inappropriate he had been and fell all over himself praising how hard Panda had worked on the project.

I really like this game and have invested more money in it than in any other KS, but there are aspects of Petersen Games' comportment which have occasionally given me pause.

This is my first "speed paint". I estimate around 2 hours per mini. The sculpts are hit or miss but I think they did a good job with the faces. I learned a bit about speed painting and what I could possibly get away with. I used Uniform Gray primer, a minimal pallet, Quickshade Strong Tone, and added a a bit to a few bases.

The gray primer I left for anything that was steel and I like the end result. I am working in the Generals (bad guys) now. Most of their sculpts are not that good but the dragon looks pretty good. I will continue with the expansion sets after the base game is painted.

I have me a bit of a dubious, largely because I'm not certain these will, in fact, work for anybody. But. Still.. the concept is pretty damn cool.

"Tilt Five is a whole new way to play games, in Augmented Reality (AR), with freaking holograms!
When you slip on the Tilt Five glasses and look at the game board, a vibrant 3D world opens up to you.  Suddenly chasms seem to drop infinitely into your table, and game characters and monsters spring up from the game board.  This is gaming unlike anything you've experienced before.
"When we started designing the Tilt Five system our focus wasn't on the technology for technology's sake.  We wanted to provide an amazing gaming experience that blends the things you love about video games and board games. And we wanted it to be just as fun when playing solo, together with your friends, or even when you're apart."  Jeri Ellsworth, Co-Founder & CEO "

Be interesting to see if this lives up to itself.
