Cthulhu Wars: Onslaught Three

If he said "hey we have a new alternate sculpt for you completionists!" that would be fine.  Instead he says, "I never really liked the one I sold you in the first place" (my paraphrase).

You know that this just the opening salvo in a host of "dire this-that-and-whatever" announcements, right?  What worries me is whether each one of these pieces is going to have it's own special set of rules for play. Upping the complexity of the game in order to justify the release of new sculpts doesn't make sense when most gamers are still in the middle of the initial game's learning curve.  Which brings me to another annoyance:  I suspect that we're going to have a repeat of the last KS where our Omega Rulebooks will arrive at our doorsteps just in time to be declared obsolete under the barrage of new special rules accompanying the next KS.  At least we didn't have to pay extra for them this time around . . .

I've gone in guns blazing on the two previous KS's, but I'm starting to sour a bit on this one.

This is sort of a continuing thing from Chaosium as well. Hence why CoC has decimal point editions and each edition is generally just a revision of the previous one. I appreciate that the guys have an ongoing self reflection process, but it's a bit frustrating when you want the game to just settle down for a bit.

I think it just how Sandy operates. He strives for perfection but also wants to have a multitude of options. The two things sometimes work against each other.

On a side note, I have a regular CW demo game scheduled at my FLGS (every two weeks). If anyone is in the Phoenix area, hit me up with a PM.

Yeah I agree.  Also I think Chaosium and Kickstarter don't mix, and they announced that the new RuneQuest will NOT be kickstarted (we are in an age where it is now assumed you will launch on KS unless you say otherwise.)

As for Cthulhu Wars 3, I am increasingly thinking I will wait until I see what Mr. Petersen has to offer with Planet Apocalypse.

I am all in for CW, but I am also really excited for Evil High Priest and Planet Apocalypse!

Don't get me wrong though. I love how Cthulhu Wars has turned out and this process is probably the only way CoC has gotten as good as it is, but it kinda feels like the rulesbook should be an updateable pdf/app.

That would be nice.

Although, I also think the rule book PDF should include the Spellbooks and abilities. It would make it much easier than having to go dig for stuff...

I ended up selling everything I had. First, because I was having a hard time getting my friends to play. Second, because it simply takes up a ton of space. If there was a half sized version, I would probably jump back in and find other people to play.

The BGG forums are active with Play by Forums (PBFs) and Vassal Mod has quite a bit of the game available (as does Table Top Simulator, IIRC). None of those match gaming in person, but are better than not.

This is also why I am anticipating a nerf of Tcho Tchos. They are not out of balance at the Petersen table. They dominate in a game full of timid newbies.

To be fair, my last gaming group had the same experience with the Cthulhu Wars base game.  It usually only took losing one game to a more aggressive player to realize that they, too, needed to be more aggressive in the next game.  I think that's just part of learning the game, especially for players who tend to "turtle".

I decided to go in on this, as I like some of the new stuff and as with some others here, I'm heavily invested in Cthulhu Wars.  The rule revisions don't bother me, since I'd rather the devs "fix" the game as genuine problems are identified (as opposed to "flavor of the month" type issues).  Any game that is currently supported will have a FAQ or other corrections, so I don't think that's any different with the Omega Rulebook revisions.  If you have an existing copy (as do I), then it's still a valid compendium of the current rules.

While true, the Tcho Tcho faction is extreme due to having the unique ability to surge into the lead while turtling. They can be stopped be it is tough to pull off for newbies, and not easy for veterans.

Some common suggestions so far are to use High Priests for everyone and don't give TT one for free AND to make Tablets only give an ES for each gate you control with a HP in the zone. I have tried it and think it is a good balance adjustment.

I enjoy the game and was heavily in for both KS1 & 2 but this one just hasn't grabbed me at all,

I like a few of the sculpts but that's about it and I've got more factions than i'll ever play (or persuade people to play) so i'm surprised to find myself not backing at all when I was anticipating trying to get everything,

I hope it goes well for them and their backers though

We are nearing the end and there has been tons of updates, including GC and TT spellbook changes.

What are thoughts on the changes and the stretch goals?

Where is everyone at on this one?

Played a bunch of CW this weekend.  I like the spellbook changes for Cthulhu -- he has more of a sporting chance.  This game continues to enthrall.  Loved the Library map and Primeval map.

Stretch goals?  What stretch goals? (Joke).  Seriously those investigators ... I can't stand them.  They look like something from another game and I fully expect to see them there someday.

I would like to see a production miniature.  Those renders look very highly detailed, much more so that existing CW miniatures.  Have there been any photos of production minis for Gods War?

Can I back for a dollar and upgrade later?  I might want to see what the shipping charges actually end up being.

Not sure on backing at $1.

The investigators are from another game with crossover rules here. That was said in an update somewhere.

I am all in this time and loving most all of it. Shaggai is an awesome map and The Ancients are a ton of fun that change how everyone plays the game at the table. The colored base covers are great (as long as they fit), and the new Shaggai tokens are great!
