Painting purple space marine primaris

Rather than clutter up the topic in sci-fi general with the details of how I'm painting these guys, I decided to start a wip thread. 

 

The plan is to paint all the marines in the primaris half of the new warhammer 40000 starter box.

 

So far I know the base colors I'm going with are purple armor, silver trim, blue weapons, green lenses. I haven't decided on squad markings or chapter symbol yet. This is of course not the colors of a canonical chapter, so I'm making it up as I go.

 

I painted two test models just to make sure purple, blue, silver looked ok.

I like it--reminds me of the Sweeps, led by Scourge from the Transformers Movie (the awesome animated one).  I know these aren't finished, but I'd like to see a little more contrast in the final product--probably just details and decals will do the trick, something to break up the cool-color wash look.

They look really nice. The silver really works with the purple. When you said blue guns, I didn't envision this type of blue. Excellent choice !

yep, I'm working on what sort of little symbols to put on. I think the current front runner is a black spider with green eyes as the chapter symbol. thinking maybe also a stripe for unit type. bright blue vertical for the plasma gun guys, black horizontal for the flyers, diagonal white for basic infantry, bright green v for command? still not entirely certain

Ok, while I haven't fixed on a symbol I really like yet, I have started the assembly line part of the painting just because I want to be able to attach all the limbs before I lose them.

 

Also pictured, the test model for the jet pack guys.

 

And because people were discussing scourge, and the sweeps, a picture of jump pack guy, scourge, cyclonus, and galvatron. Out of the lot of them they're closest in color to galvatron, though they are still quite a bit more pastel than he is.

Mostly worked on the boring parts of the job today, putting purple on a bunch of armor. 

 

But I also painted the face of one of the lieutenants who doesn't have the sense to keep his helmet on.

Did some more work on getting the basic colors in place so that I can assemble everything. 

 

Most of the bodies have their purple now, and I'll be working on the metal. 

 

Unfortunately something went wrong with two of the minis. One has lost its left arm, so I will need to try and build a bionic one. Another seems to have ended up with the wrong arm. There are a bunch of the minis that have very similar but not identical limbs. So I think I'm going to need to try and trim the arm to fit.

 

I've also added pictures of the captain in Gravis armor since I assembled him. 

 

The rest of the purple is going to need to wait until I get another bottle of malvernian purple.

Still working on the boring part of this project, getting the base armor painted enough that I can assemble the minis. 

So far I have assembled all 10 bolter bobs, the 5 plasma guys, the two LTs, the captain and one jump pack guy. 

 

Still to go, the banner guy, and 2 more jump packs. 

 

The good news is the missing arm got found. I painted the missing arm silver. He failed to maintain his armor and the tech priests refuse to paint it.

Numbers

Moving on to some more interesting stuff. Got a symbol and a name now. 

"Glorious hands", a dorn chapter, black fist over blue fire. As mentioned before obviously a non-canon chapter. More over they are going to be a mostly primaris chapter, with remnants of broken chapters integrated into their forces. (A convenient excuse for using the motor pool from my old 4th edition marines even though I long since sold off most of their infantry)

 

Also started on squad markings. Dark red diagonal on the right shoulder, and a red left knee plate for inceptors (still a terrible name), vertical aqua stripe on the left shoulder and knee for hell blasters, LTs get a stripe on their hemet backpack and collar, sergeants get a white stripe in the middle of their squad stripe, and a mark on their helmet's brow. All squads get a # on the left knee. Haven't decided on jump pack guys, or captain marks.

 

Reivers will get no insignia but their armor is much darker than other units (coming soon ish?)

Very nice work on them!

 

Quick question: How hard does it look like it'd be to remove those silly gun shields from the pistols on the jet pack guys?

(Asking for my own knowledge, certainly not advocating you change them)
