77376 Minotaur Demon Lord and 72243 Kraken

Recommended Posts

Started up a new project..

My inspiration is mainly from the cover art of John Sumrow from a rock band called Monster Magnet. Both for the mini and it's base. Its not gonna be a replica, but just freely inspired by their covers.

I wil try to incorporate planets and a small space-craft, the 72243 Kraken from Reapers CAV line.

But I will also be looking at this version of the same mini for inspiration (not dublicate), as I really like the dark and gritty look of it, from this thread; and I think it somehow fits into the cover art.

So far I've worked on his skintones, and I think I'm almost done with it..!??

I want to keep him fairly dark, as I'm planning to paint some OSL comming from his left hand, from some kind of exploding planet.. I tried to sketch the OSL with white on his skin.

Small progression.

Did his eyes and some fur.

And I startet on the base. This planet-ish lump will be the main part of the base, that he will be standing on. Its made from a wooden ball with sculpted contours. And some base colour.

A slow progress has been going on.

I worked on some of his leather straps, very inspired by Bailey03's thread about his Redghar - Orc Pirate. I tried to do some of the things he describes. It dosnt look like bailey03's at all but Im quite happy with them anyway.

First picture is of leather straps in an early state and next two pictures are finished ones.

I also experimented a bit with weathering on his armor. First I gave the armor a mix of gunmetal and leather brown. Then a wash black and Vallejo Dry Rust. Then spots and splats of Dry Rust. Its not done yet but Its going in the right direction.

I worked some on his fur, but Im not too happy about that. (Picture two).

Next picture is of the base planet, where I played around with light and shadow..not sure where it is going..

Last picture is just a white base color of the Kraken spacecraft.

Comments and critiqs are very welcome!

Worked more on his rusty armor.

mix of army painter fur brown and Msp explosion orange.

Mainly on top of the Dry rust I applied earlyer.

And then a few highlights with gunmetal.

I think it miss something, not sure what to do from here with the rust.

should I add more dark color?

any suggestions??

A couple armor plates, very close to finished. Not much have changed..

They got a bit of Vallejo Dry rust mixed with P3 red ink. To pull out some shadows and add color to the rust..

C and C is always appreciated.

A few things have been going on.

I have added a couple lava cracks to the main planet, and the small exploding planet, wich is going to be attached to his left hand is just about done

Still lots to do!! But slowly moving forward.

C and C is as always very welcome.

More progress;

I’ve painted bronze parts on his armor with verdigris. And attached the exploding planet to his hand, so need to do some OSL.

And his loincloth is done.

For some reason I find this guy really difficult to photograph, it seems the details floats out.

(Its just phone pics, but still).

As always Comments and critiqs are more than welcome!

Progress..

Horns is done, OSL from The exploding planet in his hand is close to done. Should maybe be more intense..

The top of his staff (Im thinking of it more as a (magic) staff than halberd..!?) is done and the verdigris on his copper parts is done.

C&C is as always welcome.

-thanks for looking.

This project is awesome! I'm loving your detail work! You've handled the metallic and weathering of them really, really nicely. The staff/halberd was a brilliant place to bring in the galaxy theme and it looks really lovely. I might steal that idea at some point.

Great planning for the OSL by keeping the overall look dark - that's what I keep failing at the most with in my own OSL attempts. I agree with you that it maybe needs to be more intense. His face looks really good, (I especially love the bright points of reflection in his eye - I think that's what sells it the most for me) but I think you might not have gone bright enough on his arm with it being closer to the light source than his face. The little exploding planet (which is really cool!) isn't reading as a glowing light source just yet.

You should be really proud of the work you're doing on this guy. It's absolutely awesome and you just put this figure into my shopping cart!

Thank you, I really appreciate it.

I Think I will put more white om the little planet, to make it more of a light source. And add a bit more light to his arm.

You are very welcome to steal ideas, Im glad to inspire.
