Traveller Character Generator Game

It was holy hell getting a scout who survived in the original GAME, TGP. Believe me, I played it in the day.

Untitled.jpg.d02f6a8d8b76d5259090c96396d57c0d.jpgThey didn't want Cheng back after his first term? Now I'm incllined to wonder what kind of a madman he was...

I am reminded of a very long drive I took with a friend, back in the early eighties. As a time killer, I got out Traveller Book 1, and we began generating characters. My friend at one point came up with a merchant, and for some reason, that merchant did NOT muster out. Term after term after term, to the point where he had to start making aging rolls, and he finally quit the Merchant service at age 89, with a massive retirement bonus and a Str and Int of, I dunno, 3 or 4 each, due to advanced age... but a SMG skill of, IIRC, SMG-7 (which in classic Traveller, made him a guy who could shoot apples off your head with a Tommy Gun, without even ruffling your hair.)

We wondered about this octogenarian who couldn't remember what he had for breakfast or walk through a grocery store without sitting down and catching his breath, but could shoot the buttons off your coat at fifty paces with an SMG. Truly, you got the HELL off his LAWN. NOW!

My friend asked if we had the Robotics supplement with us. I did. He then talked me through the process (he was driving) of spending this guy's insane retirement fund on a robot wheelchair ("like Captain Pike had, in that two part Star Trek episode,") with a built-in, pop-out robotic arm with attached SMG which he could operate using his flawless shooting skills.

We thought about that for a minute. Finally, I said, "Dude, don't take this the wrong way, but a seriously senile old Merchant in an armored wheelchair with tractor treads and a robot arm with SMG and secondary autoloader with multiple snail drums? That ... just... sounds like... a REALLY BAD IDEA. I'm envisioning this cackling senile old maniac shooting up the IHOP because they forgot the blueberries in his oatmeal, or something."

"Or forgot to factor in his senior discount on the check," agreed my friend.

And we laughed ourselves sick for quite a while after that. Retired Col. Merch Littleoldman, terror of the IHOP....

Ok, now I remember. We made characters for Traveller but of course like most rpgs we never played. Pretty sure our GM could have made a book bigger then the Core Pathfinder book just with 3-5 player's character sheets....

I forwarded the link to my daughter, who rolled a character that tried to enlist in the Marines, was denied, but then drafted into service by... the Marines.

Go fill out THAT backstory...

 Oh, yeah, there's a story here... ::D:

Army Captain John Khan   379496  Age 22

1 term                                          Cr40,000

Skills: ATV-1, Air/Raft-1, Fwd Obsvr-1, Rifle-1, SMG-2

Service History:

Attempted to enlist in Army.

Enlistment accepted.

Commissioned during first term of service.

Promoted to Captain.

Denied reenlistment after first term.

I have decided that "Jack"'s commanding officer was an incompetent political appointee and complete wanker, and Jack chose to disobey a catastrophically stupid direct order on a mission - which turned out in hindsight to be the only logical option in the situation, and,  just coincidentally, also amounted to "accidentally" fragging the guy's future political career when the after-action reports dropped and it was revealed that the officer had screwed up by the numbers all the way into triple digits.

And so the officer ended up using his family connections to get posted to some obscure diplomatic job, and they swept Jack under the carpet so nobody would be reminded of the incident.

I'm curious his many of you survive...

Well, if it's anything like classic Traveller character generation, not many will.

Traveller pre-game character deaths have been a big joke in my gaming group for almost forty years.

I think other was... Other. Criminal, pirate, planet side jobs. With that skill set I'd almost guess something like handyman in a big building? Construction worker?
