Reaper Bones 4: Enthusiasm and Commentary Thread

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if this has been posted in this thread (if it has, I'm having trouble finding it again), but here's the full explanation for why Argent was shrunk, and why the barge lost its water base: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbrogWjRtNw&feature=youtu.be&t=2185

Long story short, those models were originally going to be scrapped due to MAJOR cost overrun (original Argent would have cost twice what Reaper had planned to manufacture ). However, Ron apparently threw a fit and so they did some figuring and determined that by dropping the base from the barge, and shrinking Argent by 30%, that Reaper could still produce the models, rather than simply refunding everyone who had pledged for one.

This does change my feelings about the changes some, especially knowing that smaller Argent was the solution to "no Argent at all"; I just wish it had been communicated earlier so I could have managed my expectations before it arrived.

Huzzah!

Was Number 31 the most recent one? May 9th?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My thoughts on these two models:
Argent:
I have a metal Viridius(?) Unassembled. During the Kickstarter I completely missed any hints that Argent was supposed to be a counterpart to Ma’al. I just thought big dragon - twenty bucks; big dragon - twenty bucks dithered back and forth and finally gave up going to The Londoner for fish and chips one evening to have a dragon instead. It is a nice size for a tabletop dragon; nicer for that than it would have been at the initial proposed size. I can think of one scenario from a book that a dragon that huge would be useful for. The author was Rick Cook. I have forgotten the title but it is about book 4-5 in the series.
So one morning a dragon is spotted approaching the main stronghold of the alliance of dwarves, Elves, men, gnomes, and other goodguys. This is a huge fortress. It has archers, soldiers, knights, horses, ballista, and even dragonriders. But the wild dragon is much bigger than the beasts they can ride...it is nearly eye-level with the keep. It lands in front of their castle. It holds up one of its claws, then it starts breathing fire,
Blue-hot-fire, on its own claws slowly heating them up until they a glowing orange red. Then it uses its claws to carve (melt) litttle trenches in the flagstone paving outside the main gate, just to show that it could reach over the outer wall and do that to buildings.
At that point it starts speaking in a thunderous voice explaining it wants a word with the highest level wizard, now would be good, five minutes earlier would have been better, and it’s waiting, but not patiently.
Enough rambling about Argent. I am good with the size he turned out.
The Barge with water base:
Good call leaving off a water base. It is a much better product as a waterline model.  Far more useful. I didn’t order one for other reasons. But if it had included a water base that would have killed it for me. Besides, making a basic water base is easy for anyone that wants one.
It would have been really silly of Reaper to spend a ton of money to make the water base when any Home Depot will sell a simple alternative. Plastic diffusion panels for fluorescent light fixtures are available in numerous patterns and several of them, if painted cleverly, can look like nearly smooth water with random ripples. The patterns on the face side translate as dimpling on the reverse side.
Anyhow, it was a wise choice declining to manufacture something that is an easy scratch build.
I think that putting those guys out front as the voice of the business was a mistake. Anyone who feels like there is a communication problem can now easily make the leap to linking that feeling to the honchos in charge. I hope they get a new "face" for their communications before Mystery Project launches.
I think they’re worried about anything said being taken the wrong way online; product development, plans for the future, commitment of resources, or really any remark that can be taken the wrong way and run with by a SJW troll. A couple of years ago one of their employees got attacked horribly on Twitter, I think it was, and his profile said “Reaper miniatures” so then this troll went about attacking Reaper, etc. It cascaded into something absurd as most things online have a tendency. That experience probably shaped their online presence and communications of today.
  Reveal hidden contents
I am 95% sure that's The Wizardry Consulted, which would be book 4 in the series.
The barge I see no issues with, really.
Though, I imagine a few stores will be sold out on 'water effect' products pretty soon.
And some may decide to make it a wreck on a coastline, or something like that.
That said, I must say....
(And please forgive the tone)
A POX on DPD! May their paperpushers burn in a blazing pyre of their own redundant forms!
Kit emailed me today and told me to update my KS address info to add a 'Tax ID' because DPD insists on one.
Except, people DON'T HAVE that here in Norway!
They 'needed it for customs processing'...
Just hogwash of course.
Maybe the package gets sent tomorrow...
I'm not holding my breath while waiting...
Tax Id?
You mean like the personal number you get for dealing with the government, filing taxes etc?
That's something I would never give a mail service.
One can use that for fraude!
I don't think they would need anyway.
While I'm not too disappointed with Argent, he was suppose to be the big dragon opposite Mal'Drakar & for that I am disappointed.  Now he just looks like a dragon in the Reaper line up.
I apologize for being cool with that..? I didn’t have very many of the “dragons in the Reaper line up”.
The hut doesn't bother me. Yes the legs could be removable but for me in my weekly games I've tried to not use too much terrain (transport back & forth, ugh) but I can see it being a problem. The interior is too small to be useable (1 mini per room at a time if it was accessible?).
My goto baseline impression of Baba Yaga’s Hut is a line art drawing by Trampier(?) in the old Monster Manual. Thus, I think it is supposed to be a one room hut ...multiple rooms seem all wrong.
My biggest complaint about this KS is scale/size is all over the place. I think when I backed I wasnt DMing anything other then Rcon games. Now that I'm back to regular allbeit 2 a week games it really bothers me. I can handle a little off scale but when you need a huge & the mini is a medium, hmmm. This is a problem with prepainted figures. Just look at some of the large or bigger minis in the Pathfinder they are smaller figs on appropriate size bases. I'll have to do this with Reaper figures now. Something I don't think I've had to do.
This is why Reaper has bases of all the kinds and types. There are too many differing published games and standards of scale/size.
Also when did oval bases become a standard?
That happened when Games Worshipful decreed, “Make It So” in all the kinds of Warhammer. What possible objection could one have??? Only HERETICS ask such questions.
They look sharper than the one I painted over the weekend, but since I've seen my finished paint job and seen Sirithiliel's speed paint of the raptors I've lost hope of ever being able to them justice anyhow.
I guess that I'll join in on the pox flinging....
Got my Email from Reaper yesterday, closely follow by one from DPD saying that the box o' minis would be delivered today. Usually(but not always) they will send you an email on delivery day with an approximate delivery time.
I didn't get any emails and nothing has been delivered. Typical DPD :down:
This is in addition to the fact that they seem to have lost my order from another company as well :mellow:
I finally got the chance to take a cursory glance through my big ol' box o' bones. Everything I ordered it there, at least at first glance. I'll have to do a more detailed inventory later.
      I haven’t backed any of Bears Heads kickstarters yet, but I’ve been tempted by everyone.
      This is the one that I give in to.
      https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/98300108/narthoks-the-excellent
      But hurry! It’s funded with ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT!
      As nice as that sculpt is, it’s the sci-fi and bartender versions I’m most excited about. The stretch goals for those have been reached, but only concept drawings are available to show.
      I think these are great unique looking eye beasts.
      @TheAuldGrump maybe something you could use for your campaign?
      Here we are in 2015, the 40th Anniversary of Chaosium as a game company. In a few months Glorantha, Greg Stafford's fantasy game world, celebrates its Golden 50th anniversary. We feel the time is right to bring the celebrated classic second edition of RuneQuest back into print. Gaming is going through a bit of an Old School renaissance as of late, and we want RuneQuest to be a part of it. We hope you’ll join in on the fun!
      REWARDS:
      The RuneQuest Hardcover Book - is 144 pages. It will have sewn binding. It contains all the 2nd edition text, but with all the errata incorporated where it belongs. Additional material has been added to the appendices at the end. If you want more than one copy of the book, add another $30 for each additional book to the level you are backing.
      The RuneQuest Leatherette Hardcover Book - is 144 pages. It is in red leatherette with gold foil stamps on the front and spine. It has a color dust jacket. If you want more than one copy of the book, add another $50 for each additional book to the level you are backing.
      The Player Handouts - are 20 pages of reference material for the players to use during character creation and ongoing play.
      The GM Screen - is two 11 inch x 17 inch (very close to A3 paper size) color cardstock panels with handy charts and tables from the Rulebook on the GM side, and classic Luise Perrene art on the Player Side.
      The Old School RQ Source Pack - consists of four of the earliest RQ1/RQ2 supplements published: Militia & Mercenaries, Scorpionmen & Broos, Trolls & Trollkin and the Balastor's Barracks scenario. Each is about 16 pages in length with a color cardstock cover. If you want more than one copy of this Source Pack, add another $50 for each additional Source Pack to the level you are backing.
      The Runequest Playtest Manuscript book - is a 250+ page hardcover book created from high resolution scans of the original playtest manuscript. This manuscript is the only known set of playtest notes in existence which were lovingly kept in a binder for the last 40 years. This playtest material was used to create the first edition of RuneQuest. It includes newly written introductory essays by Steve Perrin and Greg Stafford. Here's a few pictures of the original:
      The 2 volume "Unpublished Scenarios and Source Material" set - is two hardcover books with hundreds of pages of unpublished RuneQuest material by Greg Stafford and other early authors. It includes a fair bit of Sorcery rules for the West, the Howling Tower scenario set in the Upland Marsh, as well as a wide range of other material, esoteric and otherwise. We will describe it in more detail in the comments section and the FAQ. This reward is only available as part of this Kickstarter.
      Into old school RPGs, love Glorantha/Runequest ?
      then this one is a great choice
      SITHRAH is a sci-fi about a little girl trying to find her father after their plane crashes in a unfamiliar land. That's when she starts seeing an invisible creature, called SITHRAH, who has been following her around. It's not long until she runs into a young man named Dino who is running from his own ghosts. Together they set out to find her missing father wherever the evidence leads.
      Book 4 will focus on their journey across The Deep to try to find Light City.
      This series will be 6 books long.
      Sithrah has been a big experiment with the comic format by mixing subtle prose with comic panels. My hope is to blur the lines between comics, children's books, and novels without making it jarring for the reader.
      Most of my inspiration comes from the comic artists of the 90's when I refined my drawing style. Later I became influenced by Miyazaki's movies and storytelling and have been trying to make comics that have a similar depth and feeling.
