Reaper Bones 4: Enthusiasm and Commentary Thread

Recommended Posts

I have had one box from Reaper which was bigger than I expected. I think that they must have run low on the smaller sized boxes, because usually they are indeed Tetris masters!

Oh dear. We have a lot of big 'uns coming. I think we're going to need to build some shelves. Storing them is one thing. What if I actually manage to paint these suckers? I only have so much space on the windowsills!

It is my hope that they do like they did for Bones 3, where they wrapped all the Canadian orders on a pallet and shipped them across the border. Doing so puts us out of the wave we were in and we get our stuff a little later, but they saved me a ton of customs fees.

That seems wise. I don't mind getting my box later for the sake of avoiding customs fees.

Huh, I'm going to be out of town for all of February.

In my defense, what are the chances that a large KS would deliver exactly on time?

You can always have it shipped to me. I will take REALLY good care of it, I promise! ["Package? What package? I haven't seen any package...]

How bad do you get hit for customs fees?

I don't know first hand, but when I worked for Books Nippan/Digital manga(DMD), one of my customers who was in Canada would have me send her product (mostly Sailor Moon Manga) to a PO box in New York, then she would come across the border and get her product and apparently pay LESS at the border. If you are going to go through all that, I'd say the fee must be pretty stiff.

I haven't gotten hit for customs fees yet personally, but my orders haven't been as extensive as the Bones IV will be. I think the most has been $80 Reaper one, which got through, no problem. And no customs fees for the goblin from Iter (UK), or the Demented figures (Australia). For that matter, none for a bust from S75 (Spain).

I'm quite happy with how the EU orders are planned to happen. Yes, paying VAT up front hurt, it was roughly 20% iirc, but if everything actually arrives at my door without extra charge I will be quite happy.

Paying upfront in smaller incriments feels better than having your fulfillment joy dampened by a sudden large fee.

If it flags (a bones Kickstarter would be big enough to be flagged), you're looking at at least a $9.95 CAD fee per package (standard Canada Post handling fee) plus 5% GST on top of all of that (including on the handling fee!).  If you're in a province with PST, you pay that too, and if in a province you pay HST instead of GST (harmonized sales tax, which is basically GST+PST rolled into one tax).  If you're lucky, that's all.

If you get the customs person that pays attention to the labels (instead of just the invoice's total amount), and/or they open the box and see a bunch of minis that have the words "made in China" on them...  You get a sizeable import duty on all applicable figures.  Not sure the actual rate, but I'll go with "ouch my wallet, credit card please don't take this personally" as an appropriate descriptor of such.

Oh, and this is all on a calculated CAD rate that's usually about 2% lower for exchange rates than current mid-market rates (aka worse than PayPal exchanges).

Using Pezler as an example, tax is 11% in Saskatchewan.  For easy math, I'll say it's $500 USD in product - our example Pezler really likes dragons, or expansions, or wanted multi-colored core sets. ::P:   Times that by 1.35x to get an exchange rate sort of worse than current, and we get $675 CAD.  Taxes along on that (for SK rates) are $74.25, plus the handling fee (I'll round it up a cent and call it $11.05) which makes the total of $85.30 CAD in taxes.

If that same package were to be fully inspected, there could easily be another 20% or so in fees tacked on for duty, which would add on another whopping $149.85 CAD in duty, bringing the total $675 CAD equivalent order up to a whopping $910.15 CAD, or a 34.8% increase compared to base pricing, or a 19.9% increase compared to GST and handling alone.

This had a lot of assumptions with a bit of rounding in it to make the math easier.  This was all typed on mobile, after all....

Short version: Customs fees can get pretty bad when it crosses the border, depending on point of origin, and how it gets assessed.

That is very depressing. I would very much appreciate an answer about this from the one who can truly help us, @ladystorm.

Such was not the intention, and for such I apologize.  Sometimes my curiosity gets the better of me.  I didn't quite think far enough past the "I'm curious, let's run the numbers" phase, came up with a few napkin math numbers (conveniently numbers that are multiples of 5, because, well, much easier math).  I also don't always double check HOW I've written something, and how it could potentially be read as an almost doomsday writing on the wall kind of thing >.>;;;;

I've yet to read about a Canadian ordering Bones from Reaper, and paying anything more than the $9.95 handling fee + GST/PST/HST on the converted cost of the product itself (they don't factor shipping costs into such calculations usually), but I also haven't actively searched for such.  It is quite possible that when Reaper imports the crates from the manufacturing facilities in China that import taxes are paid there, and then NAFTA (or other trading alliance) rules apply, so then it's just provincial/federal taxes that we would pay on the items.

What were customs fees for your Bones III orders? Seems like Reaper made it smoother than previous runs, Pez?

I tried searching back for the delivery discussions from past Bones  kickstarters without much luck for the first two.

I did find a post I made about the taxes I paid for Bones 3 which was $28.00.

No mention in my post about duty or handling fees.

Should also note that Bones 3 was the only kickstarter where I didn’t back for the core set. It was definitely the least I spent on a Bones kickstarter.

This exactly!

For me it is a huge improvement.

Bones II and III directly from USA to the Netherlands gave a Customs 33% Tax.

I'm happy about this method as well- the total import tax on my Bones 2 kickstarter was about £160, probably due to the fact that UK customs count postage cost as taxable

On a more positive note, is it wrong that I'm looking forward to all the pictures of forumites cats sitting in their new boxes? ::P:
