Reaper Bones 4: Enthusiasm and Commentary Thread

Not sure why ppl would get fatigue.  I only got core set on the first couple.  Just to sell them off.  But other bigger stuff and expansion stuff that's cool.  Just cause you have tons of stuff, you could sell stuff if you don't need it all.

Like, I hope bones 5 launches this summer, but you can always get less stuff :)

Because I spent a ton of money, I paint slow, and I don't have the energy to sell other pieces off. I adore many sculpts but don't have time to paint them, but know that at retail I'm less likely to get my paws on them. So I want them, for all of my fantasies of "oooh but I could...".

I'd rather have a good long break before even thinking about how much to throw at this. Yeah, I threw the money at it ~1.5 years ago. But I'm thinking about it *now*. Give me some time to recuperate.

I don't have Bones fatigue. I'm on Bones AUTOPILOT.

Core set and paints are good deals and, unlike boardgames, it's gonna be hard to find these prices once the miniatures hit the OLGS. Retail is still better if you only want a few pieces.

For Bones V, I do hope someone at Reaper's played Gloomhaven. This has been BGG's most popular dungeoncrawl for 2+ years running, and finding proxy miniatures, including terrain, is both expensive and a pain to hunt down.

Exactly how I feel. Great summation Cyradis.

But I have to admit that after seeing the sneak peeks of some of the upcoming minis, I find I’m actually excited about Bones 5 and how Reaper deals with the known issues of the Bones Black plastic.

I just hope they have a real long post kickstarter pledge manager for Bones 5.

I also hope they get out ahead of some of the sour feelings. It would stink if Bones 5 is noticeably smaller in pledges because of buyer hesitance.

All of that said, I speed painted 7 bones 4 minis today and I'm really happy with them.

my plan for bones 5 is what i did for bones 3, which was pledge for things i know i want, add ons or pieces of the core set , maybe an expansion if one interests me

a new change will be that i'll be very cautious pledging for anything that is not a actual model. be it concept art or 3D render, i'm going to have to be really really sure i will like it no matter what before i pledge for it (dragon turtle is an example of a 3D render that i liked a lot and would pledge for under my new personal rules)

i find it fascinating how people get their bones stuff and dive right in.  so far, ive been in all 4 bones kickstarters.  I've painted: the huge kaladrax from... bones 1 was it?  (that one pissed me off - my fault; i didnt notice that the rib cage was solid, so i ended up sculpting a new spine and ribcage to make it hollow since hated the solid look).  Also quickly painted the slimes/oozes from bones 2 or 3? not sure which it was.  And the frog demon (hezrou).  started the cthulhu, then sold it while i was like 5% done.

thats it. all this stuff is collecting here in bags.  Sure bones 4 wont be any different even tthough i will probably start initial planning for the Roc and Turtle Dragon.

i have always dived in immediately, on the things that really grab my inspiration. I started Ma'al from bones 3 the very night it came in, just like how i started my zombie dragon from this one immediately. Narthrax was my first of bones 2 to be started, the next day after receiving the box

the things that don't catch my inspiration, notably the humanoid figures my husband wants for gaming, take longer. They usually get painted when he needs them, otherwise i leave them boxed because i just dont' care about painting small figures

I dont think there is that much of a sour feeling. I can't see Bones 5 doing worse because of anything except personal finances among hobby memebers. There might even be a boom with speculators (and then a bust when they have finally bought too many core sets for the demand). Im just surprised to see people unhappy with having too many minis or the quality and variety of the core sets. The core set works out to about 5-8 movies at a theater or maybe lunches at an inexpensive restaurant. I get much more entertainment value from a core set than that, many times more.

i'm the opposite. I got the coreset when I should have just gotten the bits of it I wanted, i don't know what i was thinking. I'm not going to use a lot of the minis in the core set, and not going to enjoy painting them, so i'm not going to get as much enjoyment from them as i would those movie tickets.

what i enjoy are the big things. I like to paint them, i hate painting humanoids and tiny figures. I only do them because the hubby uses them for gaming, except even he didn't need the entire core set. I wish i knew what i was thinking 2 years ago when i pledged for it, hindsight is always 20/20

the value of the core set is amazing, but it doesn't do much when the figures sit unpainted in a box for years because we don't need them and selling on ebay is a horrible pain in the butt that i don't want to deal with, so they sit there waiting to be chopped up for conversion parts.

namely what i'm saying is that not all people get the enjoyment out of it as everyone else, we're all different

Its true. Im just the opposite. I dont buy many big figures as I dont get much use out of them. I use the small figures for rpgs or miniature wargames. It's easier for me to paint the big figures but my games dont run to dragons much and im not a big fan of them for decoration. About the only gaming things I have around for decoration are two Star Wars imperial walkers from the miniatures game. Those are pretty much my dragons. But for rpgs the core sets have been amazing. I didnt start into miniatures big time till I started finding cheap used copies of Heroquest and Battlemasters at garage slaes and thrift stores. Then I'd have hordes of orcs and goblins but mostly the same mini in multiples. Now its nice to field a horde of orcs with a variety of sculpts. After 4 kickstarters Bones minis are the bulk of my collection of unpainted minis and I work on them as I need them or have time but I never know when some Bones 1 mini will suddenly fit an adventure Im running. If you are collecting to paint I suspect it is a very different thing than wanting minis on hand for rpg adventures now and in the future.

I have no real sour feelings. I have commentaries and some critiques, but my feelings on those would not stop me from backing Reaper again on a project like this. I've been ambivalent on most of the controversial changes to items. I've been chill throughout fulfillment (although mine was one of the earlier rounds, so take that with a grain of salt). For me, it is just about how I paint and how much I spend. I'd rather wait until my wallet feels some tugs again, because I know I'll have trouble resisting.

Phew!

Well I finally went through my core set to check for missing or damaged minis.

I only have 2 bent minis which should be easily fixed with the hot / cold water method.

However I am missing these fine fellows:

I still have the expansions and add ons to go through before I contact Reaper.

You're supposed to dump them all into the bathtub and jump into them like Scrooge McDuck. What's wrong with you?

I live too far in the future. I'm preparing for that RPG game that will never come. Then again, most RPG'ers I know are munchkins so it works out. ::D:

I think of miniatures as affordable art, and my paint skills become better as I paint these miniatures. Seems silly that one thing should be art and something else shouldn't just because of a price tag or because you or I can do it.

Still need to do inventory. While I live in the future, the present is very very lazy. <_<

I finished inventorying all my expansions and most of my add-ons. Out of the 4 expansions: Dreadmere, Darkreach, Fan Favorites, and Lost valley; Dreadmere is my favorite. All the details and quality of the small sculpts leaves a positive impression and shows what Reaper can achieve with the Bones line. Lost Valley on the other hand... the quality was all over the place. Some figures were amazing! Some figures were just okay. They can all be used for tabletop, but man, whoever did quality checks on the sculpts for that expansion needs new glasses or retraining.

I am looking forward to digging through the core set. I even purchased a new case of super glue, which Amazon should be delivering tomorrow. I hope my two bottles will survive the assembly process till the case arrives.

As a backer of all 4 projects, I look forward to Bones 5 and to see what Reaper can come up with miniature-wise. Hopefully they use the quality from Dreadmere as examples and not from the Lost Valley set.

What do people think about the assembled miniatures and the disassembled miniatures? With assembled minis, I save time when inventorying and time on not gluing the mini together. On the other, I find the assembled minis from the factory contain gaps and are heavy-handed when applying the glue.
