Reaper Bones 4: Enthusiasm and Commentary Thread

Why do people keep thinking it has anything to do with being 3d printed.  Gf9, mierce, gw all 3d print high quality resin masters on commercial printers and they have great detail.

I think issue is that they are meant to be done in a type of pvc plastic in as few parts as possible, which limits them compared to high quality resin models or many part gw plastic kits.

I'm doing a borys dragon of tyr model. Head neck segments torso legs arms all 3d printed on a form 2.  The head has much finer details than on the bones models. But just the head cost me around $100.

Well because of the resizing...which has happened before.

Sure but the discussion/comments were about detail/quality (or lack on argent). This is not an issue with printing. Seems more in the material the end models are to be made in.

For instance, did anyone notice the neck plates on argent have some details like thin lines in them but the underbelly which is the same portion, does not.  Not a painting issue. That must be a lack on the zbrush design

i agree, it's the modeling, not the printing. At least part of it is the modeling. Julie's dragons are printed in the same material, and the dragon turtle is also zbrush and printed in the same material to use something even more similar to Argent. But the dragon turtle has lots of good detail, from the striations on the shell down to the smaller scales. Argent just looks...fuzzy, detail wise. Like it's a bit blurry.

he'll work for what i want him for, but i wouldn't classify as anywhere in my favorite dragon minis

My comments were always about the 3d sculpting not the printing.

Btw, has anyone talked about the quality of the Darkreach expansion (and I assume the rest of the expansion packs)?

I was surprised, everything in that expansion looks better; the plastic seems more rigid, everything looks more detailed & precise (those drows & gnomes, I need another set asap), it looks overall so neat, better than core set.

Has it been discussed, the how and why?

The expansions are all in Bones Black. BB is more rigid and detailed. It looks darn good. Only complaint is some pre-assembly on a few figures where it prevents reaching an area with a brush.

Just got a tracking code!

With EasyPost, not DPD, though...

As for Bones Black and glue, it softens up real nice in hot water, and the glue isn't all that strong when boiled...

(Pulled apart one of my Efreeti a while ago to adjust the poor fitment)

Yeah, Bones Black.

The detail is awesome!

I was excited to see the detail on the smaller minis this time, a huge improvement over the earlier bones material.

As for Argent, I'm selling him.

I like the pose and the dragon even though he's shrunken a bit from earlier concept.

But what spoils it for me is the wings.

They're simply to heavy, I think in this case it would have been good to make him out of two types of material, Bones Black for the body and the older white bones for the wings?

But it's not a bad dragon at all!

I have trouble now deciding what to paint first.

As soon as I finish my Komodo Dragon I will pick something from Bones IV so I have some time to decide.

There is a lot of great stuff in there.

I'm in awe of the Chaos Toads and the Magical Portal, the Zombie Shark, the Dragon Turtle.

The Lost Valley is a favorite! All those nice animals!

I got that the same way and it still got delivered by DPD..

Great to hear you're getting your package Gadgetman! Awesome xD

I JUST finished counting and inventizing.. inventorizing.. inventing... damnit. Making the inventory!

I'm happy to report I got 0 missing, 0 faults of mixed up parts, 0 breaks... it was awesome!

I broke the leg of the giant spider in the Darkreach expansion myself though, but it's already glued back on as we speak :)

The Beetle Riding Bloodgnome has a difficult face to paint, hard to see the shapes of it, but I don't think it's a misprint but just 1 tiny detail not that clear in a huge bundle of insane quality detailwork.

I mean the gnomes and tiny folks with their tight faces, that's just insane. I love Bones Black! Seriously do.

It's been, well, awhile since I got my Bones and I still haven't had the chance to complete a thorough inventory. As of right now I'm planning to take the first week of June off so maybe then. I think I'll schedule a Painting Day with my gaming group as well . . .

I thought it could be Bones Black, but the material's color is significantly lighter than the Bones Black Owlbear (the only BB I had to compare) so I wasn't sure.

I used to dislike Bones when its about minis I really like: bought bones & metal, one for display, the other for my D&D. If that's the quality of bones black I will do that much less ^^

For the kickstarter they had just a slight change in colour which is sometimes hard to notice.

For the process after it they tinted it darker with pigment, but the sturdyness / details etc. of the material remains the same as you're now experiencing in the kickstarter, just easier to spot it's bones black :)

i still think they should have kept Argent at original size and done the wings in resin.  Much lighter and easier to mold.

did you try pinning it? (and even pinning the dragon to the base) While they are big, they arent abnormally heavy for the material.

As i mentioned to another reply, i do think rare earth magnets should work as well but would probably want to use 2 of them.

Regards.

      Andowyn Thrushmoor!
It's been awhile since I've painted a plain ol' character miniature. I spent the better part of today working on her and I’m overall pleased with how she came out. I really want to double my skill level by the time Bones V is delivered and I’m proud of my progress! Slowly but surely figuring out how to do faces, this one looks pretty okay, though her right eye is funky.

Since this is my first form post, the picture is her next to my first miniature! It's about four years old and I keep it around the rest of my collection in a place of honor

If anybody here loves cavern terrain and missed DF's first cavern KS KS2, this spring/summer around June DF will have KS6. The theme of KS6 will be Return to the Caverns and should be great fun for those who took part in KS2 or those who are new to DF.

DF had this to say and showed the below teaser pics

We're doing for Caverns what Dungeon of Doom did for Dungeons. A whole new batch of fun pieces to enhance your existing collection, but also completely stand-alone.

      Some of the key features:
New Core Shapes (diagonal wall, convex curves, 1" pieces, etc)
      Passages
Elevation (with stuff that's impossible on graph paper...)
Negative Space pieces (and new Terrain Trays)
      Flashy Pieces (Magnets & LEDs)
      Large pieces (4x4 and larger)

This looks like a very interesting board game with lots of new, fresh ideas and cool artwork (and nice minis - there is even a pledge level for just the minis: around 15 of them for $20 plus shipping):

If you missed the first Gloomhaven Kickstarter (and retail sold out quickly) here is your chance. I backed that game the first time around and could not be happier with the results. Warning ... that box is heavy ...
