I certainly wouldn't say no to some new Drow.  Bobby Jackson's Dark Elves are fine but don't really suit my taste.

Just paint them appropriately [?] instant drow.

I don't get it.

In the case of birds, the males would have to be attractive while the females would have to be drab. Most species where there is a significant difference in appearance would skew this way in fact.

I think I recall that some female bird species are naturally drab so as not to attract attention while they're nesting. So basically camouflage when they're laying on their clutch of eggs.

Now for a roc/phoenix/thunderbird... no matter what gender gets assigned to it, it should look flashy.

I'm assuming that the good Doctor doesn't like the style of the figure(s) in question.

I just realized an issue with the High Rollers........the d12 should have been a barbarian, not wizard. Why? Because on the game table the d12 gets absolutely no love except from the barbarian class, with the d12 hit die and the d12 damage from the greataxe.

D&D isn't the only game that uses 12 sided dice.

Yeah.  I took a bunch of elves, humans and even a vampire and painted them as kick-butt drow.  I think people really underestimate how much paint can define a figure.

There are plenty of examples where one gender of a species is much more attractive than the plain (or even downright ugly) other member of the species - peacocks and peahens, ducks, humans... ;)

Gender diversity is for a reason though

some birds have flashy males for courtship and drab females for nesting. Other birds don't (birds of prey have females LARGER than males)

lions have manes for courtship and fighting, females don't. Same with antlers

males in humans and apes are usually bulkier, but not to the extent they look like a whole new species

i just want sexual dimorphism that makes sense. It doesnMt make sense to me that a hill giant female would be gorgeous and petite and so completely different from the male.

Applying bird dinorphisim to the hill giants would mean the female would need to be uglier than the male =P or larger and fiercer, if it is bird of prey dinorphisim

i can't think of any animal species beyond human where the female is better looking than the male. In all animals the female is either the same, or more drab

Yes to Drow, but especially new Giant Spiders. I don't really like the one that is out there, and spiders are used a lot.

I went with Wiz Kids' giant spiders since I liked 'em better than the ones Reaper has, but for spider swarms and One Big Mama (Cadirith), Reaper to the rescue again.

Indeed. In animals that carry young to term, the sex that carries the zygote is less expendable than the sex that only provides germ tissue. If you assume that humanoids are mammals (see the whole mammaries discussion for this), then the vast majority of fighters should be male.

As they historically have been.

Which means that making most fighter figures male is pretty reasonable in the absence of political considerations, IMO.

FWIW, I buy more female figures than male figures, because I like to paint them more. I'm fine with female figures with sensible armor, weapons, and stances, and I support that opinion with money. But I mostly care when dealing with PC figures and boss monsters, not so much antagonists included to make up the numbers. Most generic mooks are male? Works for me.

When you live at/near the top of the food chain, it can pay to have a flashy appearance. The smart animals get the message of "Bug off, I'm cranky and don't want to be bothered"...and the dumb become lunch.
