completed Reaper Bones 4: Enthusiasm and Commentary Thread

I originally said I'd do mine as Red and Blue as a joke, but the more I've thought about it the more I like the idea.

 

I'd use red as the main color, with orange wings and yellow highlights and maybe a hint of gold here and there ('cause I just can't resist adding shiny to everything, lol), and on the blue I'd do either green or turquoise wings, with bits of green and purple scattered around and the occasional pop of silver.

 

It looks good in my head, anyways.

For those of you planning to get Dance of Death, what colors will you be painting your dragons? Same, different, with polka dots?

 

For that matter, does anyone already have color schemes for any of the Bones 4 figures picked out? I'm already planning to paint the catfish as a Magikarp (thanks to Pezler's suggestion).

Probably as a Red Dragon with black horns/points/teeth/talons and about the other, I'm still not sure. Probably as a black dragon highlighted in seaweed green. 

I would have liked a chromatic/metallic D&D dragons battle, but I'm not as confident as I would need to be to paint an entire dragon metallic, much less such an amazing piece. 

 

Another first idea that may still materialize is to recreate the scheme we can see on this art from Ciruelo

my 'white' dragon would be heavy on blue, with pale blue making up a fair portion of his scales and darker blue forming his wings, white being the highlight that'll hopefully make him come across as 'white'. The red would be heavy on the orange side, with gold for the wings. Really enhance the 'cold vs warm' aspect

Sounds like a phoenix is however big you want it to be! But the colossal phoenix will definitely have some uses. I got to harass some heroes with an evil variant just the other day! (And I had no good miniature for it, which made me very sad.)

*ACTIVATE MANSPLANATION MODE!* Phoenix are the same size as kingfishers - which is where the myth began, seeing the halcyon diving into the water, then rising up, unharmed. Then somebody expanded on the theme.

 

I have always pictured the rukh as more... vulture-like than eagle-like - vultures are the heavy lifters of the avian world. (I had a teacher that was of the opinion that the roc myth began because people saw the ostrich, and thought 'If the chicks are that big, think how big the mamma bird must be!')

 

I would have more use for a giant vulture critter than a giant eagle, anyway.

 

Garuda bird, maybe?

Thunderbird was also one that probably was vulture like, namely because it was thought to be based on the great condor. 

But for Reaper, I can assume they'd get more mileage and sales out of a giant eagle than a giant vulture

I'm hoping Gauth will do okay in Bones. I keep looking at how skinny his ankles are, comparatively.  Perhaps with his wings straight up like that, it will diminish the slowly-tipping-over problem some of the other metal-to-Bones dragons have had.

 

He's a lovely big beastie, though, should be fun to paint.

It's kind of weird - since I added not-evil not-driders to my game, I have become a lot more likely to use them.... (I like spiders. And having happy, friendly driders is a whole lot better for creeping out some of my players! )

I don't know if this is as useful as it was when we were sitting at above $1 a mini, but here it goes.

 

Total Minis	Price Per Mini

With the Pathfinder, Goblin Leaders and the final Social Stretch Chibi, we will have 119 minis in the core set. Which is $0.84 a mini. That's 84 cents for Gauth, and 84 cents for each kobold. 

 

Now what if you want to balance the price per fig based on size? Well near the beginning, Bryan said something about Gauth costing as much as 10 normal molds to build. Which got me thinking, maybe I could calculate a price per size, but applying a standardization. (This is a little changed from my previous model (which put small at 1, but thinking about it, Bryan said the cost of 10 medium sized molds to make Gauth, not 10 small sized molds. So now, I count small minis as 0.5. This makes the spread a little wider, but I think it's more fair.) 

 

So if we add up all the standardization units, it gives us:

So I did this in the beginning so I could see how much each individual model cost as part of the $100 pledge. Originally it was meant to help people do their own calculus on if there was enough value for them to justify getting the core set. I.E. would one feel better about the core if the 24 goblins  were 36 cents a pop, instead of 84 cents, for example. 

 

Now I'm wondering with the straight price per mini being so close to the standardized price per medium if it is still useful for people.

I really hope they hit us with another set of bases!  I'm not trying to be ungrateful but 1" bases is not exactly what I need since I mostly paint for display but I will take them and figure out something for them.  Also I missed out on the Base Boss KS so I will take as many bases as I can get.

With the tail as counterweight and third contact point with the ground, we may have something surprisingly stable. Unless the wings catch a breeze.

 

Need to re-watch the live stream for a better idea.

That would be the most boring epic battle ever. Everyone's immune to everyone's breath weapons and everyone's made of hit points. Hours of watching big things flapping about with poor maneuverability, breath-weaponing solely for the lulz, doing little bites and claws of damage every now and then when they can actually line up a proper flight...

 

The winner has like 5 hp left though so if you camp underneath the battle you're likely to get 2 colossal dragon hides and a hell of a fish story.
