I think they are probably quite iconic, especially the larger ones. We use plastic carrier bags here and in most of Europe. It's one of those things about the US that I grew up watching on the TV screen and always wondered about.

Is the paper plasticized, or waxed? Is it biodegradable?

 

 

 

It's just straight unbleached paper, no wax or other treatment, the same sort of material used to make corrugated cardboard boxes.  It's totally biodegradable, makes a reasonable garden mulch in fact.

It's just plain sturdy unbleached paper. The bags have infinite uses. As kids we cut them to make book covers for our school textbooks. That way we could color and personalize them and not damage school property.   You may also have received a parcel from the US wrapped in brown paper.   At Christmas time some stores print fancy bags with decorations that can be cut out, or printed designs so the paper can be used as wrapping.  These days if I don't have a use for them they go in the recycle.  Oh yeah, they are also good for absorbing oil from home fried chicken. Just lay the bag flat under a rack.
