I find the hardest/longest to paint question very interesting...not what i expected.

Do people try and paint everything to their best ability? As you can tell from my posts, depending what the model is, the detail level, size, and purpose (ie. contest or not) totally changes how much time and effort i plan to use...

Regards,

Sanjay

Several levels -

Commission or Present - these are the ones I put my massive ego into. I want them to look good

My PCs, Major NPCs, Army Characters - figures that will see a lot of use, and tied to the campaign.

Tabletop - monsters and the better units in my armies.

Mooks - Goblin #3 included.... At the extreme this is 'basecoat, dip, and base' - which I also used for one commission of 300 Mantic zombies. (I used them once, before sending them out... because I had 300 zombies and a party of 5th level characters to unleash them on....)

It's hard for me, the more detailed the sculpt The more perfect i try to make it when i paint it. Small things like the new kobolds (ks3) i want to look good enough to be PCs if they need to be, but the detail is so fine it won't stand out as well in the end. So, yes, most of the time i try to make them all look as good as possible, but sometimes end up having to accept less than ideal.

What mini are you most excited to paint?

Probably the frost giant ladies.

Which mini do you think will be the hardest/take you the longest to paint?

Dance of dragons. I'm having difficulties with a dragon right now and don't know if I can do these justice.

What mini are you buying the most of (now or planned at retail)?

Armoured goblins. Need enough of them to make a solid unit for larger wargames.

What do you hope to see most in Bones 5?

Siege equipment. Several of my armies are lacking in artillery and I'd love have cheaper versions of things like battering rams, siege towers, mantlets, etc. Scratch building all of these has been on my wish list for years and years. I bet if I actually do it then it's a guaranteed that they'll be available right after I finish and nicer than mine.

Do people try and paint everything to their best ability?

No way. That would drive me crazy. I generally play massed wargames (think Warhammer sized). While I'd love to have every mini done to high standard it's not worth the effort. I have hundreds of ordinary soldiers in several armies done with a quick base coat, sometimes with some shading, sometimes not. My special characters and minis for warband sized games generally get a bit more work. Then there's a handful that catch my fancy that I try to put some real effort into. Pretty much like what Pagan Megan wrote earlier.

I answered the five questions in the comments of KS, but I shall give a more detailed answer here.

What mini are you most excited to paint?

Dance of Death. I see so many possibilities in this miniature.
Paint one dragon black and the other white, YinYang. Red and blue, Fire and Ice/water. Same coulour, mating dance. Paint the mountain as a snowy peak, the terrain becomes the top of the world. Add water between the rocks, now it is happening in the sea or river. Add lava and it becomes a vulcano. You can even paint the rocks as a water/lava/acid spray.

Which mini do you think will be the hardest/take you the longest to paint?
Dance of Death. The planning will take a while and I want to do it justice. It is a beatiful showpiece. I plan on painting each scale individualy (no drybrushes). Not using washes, but glazes instead.

What mini are you buying the most of (now or planned at retail)?
I am considering buying a second Argent. So that I can have them as guards to my house (plus it is a bargain).

What do you hope to see most in Bones 5?
Something whymiscal. I want it to be something that gives the childhood feeling of wonder and magic.
A child in glade chasing a fae why sourounded by cute animals (This could also become dark, if you go into the more traditional fae behaviour).
A bust of Gea, mother earth or old man made of growing roots or flowers.
A bust of father time would also be of interest to me.

A diorama of the passage of time or seasons. Winter, surounded by snow and death, giving way to spring, surounded by new life.

Do people try and paint everything to their best ability?
I experiment with different techniques and designs on "normal" miniatures, then apply what I discovered to my favourite sculpts.

I'm not sure if I missed them previously or not, but came across a set of bases I didn't have on my tracking spreadsheet when I was looking through the pledge manager again:

Haven't you heard?

All the cool kids are hanging out in the D20 Random Rainbow Dragon  Challenge threads:

By hanging out I mean until there's something new info or photo wise from the Bones 4 kickstarter.

I was looking for 20mm bases at the start of the week or something and couldn't find them. So glad they're there now for all those goblins and kobolds! Also glad you didn't see them before either, means I'm not going insane.

What mini are you most excited to paint?

Zuggt-not. All those possible colors  And real mushrooms/fungi are great inspiration. Same kinda goes for her fungal followers.

Which mini do you think will be the hardest/take you the longest to paint?

I dread painting all those goblins. I know I'll need them, but it'll take forever. I don't have that much experience painting larger models, so I'm not yet sure how long it'll take me to paint things like Blacksting or the Barge.

What mini are you buying the most of (now or planned at retail)?

I'll get tons of copies of that spider from the Darkreach set. Giant spiders appear in my campaigns A LOT: The current bones spider I don't really love, and the Wizkids one seems to be permanently out of stock at the retailer I frequent. I had one of them, even painted it, but it has mysteriously vanished months ago.

What do you hope to see most in Bones 5?

I hope Reaper continues the trend of Bones 4 to primarily sell monsters or non-adventurer NPCs. There are waaaayy to many possibel race and class combinations to make everyone happy within a Bones KS, and I would rather not have a bunch of super strange PC minis I will probably never use. Also, I liked the female creatures in this KS and would like to see more. More precisely, I would like more hags/witches (old ugly European fairytale ones).

You may not be going insane, but I think that means I'm going blind?

When your players steal your giant spiders and make them disappear... that may be s sign that you use them too much... ::D:

D'aww I'm one of the cool kids!

But we are still eagerly awaiting to get our Bones IV. I'll be repeating the rainbow challenge myself on some of the dinosaurs (dunno about a challenge for everyone unless there is interest).

It will be 2019, so premature to say, but for now I would say, I will have a spare Blacktooth Terror!

Maybe I would...

I am likely tossing more into the pledge manager soon anyway. Boyfriend saw Gene doing some sculpts and now wants more of the figures, and I want extra dinos for gifts to paleontology friends. I may be the mineral nerd, but painting dinos will be more satisfying :)
