Reaper Bones 4: Enthusiasm and Commentary Thread

Recommended Posts

Honestly, there's absolutely nothing about a delay and anybody saying so are just running on completely unfounded conjecture. If there was a delay then Reaper will certainly tell us; it wouldn't be great news to hear, but at least they would let us know. Right now the only thing that is certain is that we have an extension to be able to pledge, and that is a good thing.

Let's not jump to any conclusions here, please. No need to worry until there's a need to worry.

One:

I'm happy with the extended pledge time.

Since I'm still debating on a few things, I might still pledge for those.

Two:

There has been no official talk about a delay.

If it happens they will let us know.

And other than with some companies, I won't worry about Reaper fulfilling their orders.

They always deliver.

I’m pleased with the extension for the same reason. I’m definitely getting Lost Valley now and maybe another Darkreach!

And maybe Argent! (If we see more about it before the new close date)

So why does everyone seem to assume that extending the pledge manager automatically means they've already hit a delay?

It could just be that they've finally worked out when the final orders have to be placed with the factory, and payments are due for a February delivery.

That really depends on how many they need, how many are in a given mold, how long it takes to fill that mold, and how long they have to let the mold cool before ejecting and starting over.

When I started at the guitar accessories manufacturer, it was as a temp on a plastic injection molding machine running sprues of guitar picks.  They could produce 10k picks in two shifts. They would literally fill multiple 55 gallon drums with picks before changing the molds out to produce something else.   The longest part of the product cycle for the picks was really in finishing and packaging, as they couldn't cut the picks off the frame, polish, stamp and package them as fast as the plastic shop could churn them out once it got a mold running.

I imagine that it takes a bit longer to cycle through one of Reaper's Bones molds than it does a sprue of guitar picks, but I wouldn't be surprised if each individual Bones Mold will churn out the number of figures Reaper orders in a week or two by the factory.  The bulk of the time is likely going to be scheduling the machines, and getting ALL the figures done.

I think it's quite unlikely that an increase in PM open time will cause a delay. It's pretty likely that Reaper already has good estimates of how many of each figure they'll want to order. Any incremental increase in production time required by a few more runs of any specific mold is unlikely to be noticeable.

But every previous major project from Reaper has run late, so expecting delays is pretty much par for the course. Of course it's Kickstarter; if you expect something else, you might want to try a different purchasing platform. :B):

Now, do I think that this change reflects delays that I didn't assume from the start of the project? Not really. And it might not reflect any delays at all. But speculating about that possibility seems reasonable to me.

That has not necessarily been the case in the past. When delay is inevitable, Reaper has been pretty good about telling us. (Other than in the first project, of course.) It is not my perception that Reaper is good about telling us when delay is likely. I also understand (if not necessarily agree with) the business calculus that causes that reluctance.

Also, if there is going to be a delay, Reaper probably won't know about it until closer to fulfillment.  The factory won't usually tell them there's a delay until they come up to a hard deadline.  Thats how a lot of Chinese factories work.  Everything is fine, until it isnt.

RE: delay--

The February 2019 delivery date is an estimate; it says so right there on the KS page. (Go check, I'll wait. Back already? Ok, let's continue) It's kinda hard for something to be delayed or late when the shipping date is an estimate.

I'm not worried about it; it'll get here when it gets here. If it's delayed? No big deal. I haven't made any plans that require it to arrive at my door by any certain time. Reaper will get me my stuff as quickly as they're able to. They haven't done me wrong yet.

But if I don't paint my dragons before March 2019 I'm going to explode with sadness!

So, if the project weren't to deliver until 2024, you wouldn't consider that to be either "late" or "delay[ed]"?

If you would consider 2024 to be one of those things, then we're simply discussing where to draw a line and your statement is plainly one that even you don't actually agree with. If you would not consider 2024 to be one of those things, then we disagree pretty fundamentally about how those words work wrt Kickstarter projects.

In either case, the subject is one that seems not out of bounds for discussion to me.

It didn't sound like he was going that far. I read his comment and thought the same thing at first. His tone was very disparaging in that first paragraph, but he pulled the snark back at the end. I had to read it twice to get where he was coming from. The second paragraph was all he needed to say, unless his intent was to be ugly. I don't think it was. That's not Chaoswolf's style. Everybody has an off day. I dunno. Sometimes I get the feeling people rile each other up in the PMs. Hope I'm wrong about that.

For clarification purposes, here is the relevant section of the most recent Bones 4 Update:

Quote

Question of the Week: How long do I have before the Pledge Manager closes?

So, we’d originally planned on having the Reaper Pledge Manager close on July 31. However, we’ve gotten scores of messages from backers who have asked us to extend the date. So, we’re extending the deadline until September 3, 2018. Just in time for you to come to ReaperCon and see some of the models first-hand!

I think they are pretty darn good in communicating to customers, so I am not really worried. More curious. If delays happen, so be it. If they don't, awesome. Only have 20 minis to paint before then anyway :poke:

Announcing a closing of the PM followed by a delay makes good sense to me.  So many laggards (to be honest, I was one of them)  Don t fill out the pledge manager until the very last minute, leaving the suppliers guessing at production. Amounts.  Having a premature closing time gets people like me to actually mosey over and place their main order.  But once you have caught as many fish as you can with that ploy, it makes good sense to extend the deadline to catch as many of the little drift orders right up until shipment.  That maximizes orders while keeping hype and getting those bigger pieces out of the way.

Of course it would be nice if a couple of new minis got added to give reason for the extension but doesn't look like that will happen.

And if there is a delay, so be it. It's not like most of us Don t have swarms in the wings.  Those that Don t can be assisted by those who do...

But they haven’t even said anything about a delay.... this forum gets a lot more fired about about stuff than I remember

I would think, even if people change orders, you wouldn’t have that much effected. I don’t think you can make an order for 1,342 gnolls. I would think you would order more than you need since they are filling molds with plastic.

A Viking Girl sculpted by Bobby Jackson. She was a lot of fun to paint since she had a lot of canvas for freehand work. She is also my first serious effort at NMM, so that's a well I plan to return to.

I came to paint her when I asked my friends which model needed to get some love next. I presented a wizard, a ranger, and an armored lady fighter. One chimes in that she'd like to see the fighter (she being a practitioner of HEMA). Her boyfriend mentions something about boob armor. I said, no, she's got pretty normal armor. You want to see something egregious? THIS is egregious. My HEMA friend immediately says, "I'd like to change my vote." So here we are.

Here's the WIP thread for her. Here's my next piece.

This has sod all to do with miniatures, but I would be surprised if there were not people who might want one of these pins, for literally any reason at all.
I'll let the campaign speak for itself, as I usually do; it is pins. There are, as the title implies, representations for most of the common faiths, in a literal rainbow of ... well, Pride rainbows.
