Reaper Bones 4: Enthusiasm and Commentary Thread

If I could just get that Spirit Beast in metal, that would be great...

In all seriousness, most of the Dreadmere stuff has been showing up in metal already; you'll probably get your wish - or... they'll set the building on fire.

Oh my that spirit beast is just as lovely as the art. I don't usually buy duplicate figures, but I may have to get a few more of them when they hit retail so I can paint them in every color

Okay, probably just time to avoid this thread for a week or so. I can see what's going to happen here...

Well, guess I have to be the one ... if you are referring to Reaper's decision to forego the base of the barge, I have to say I'm quite unhappy about that. Now I know that a basic caveat of Kickstarters is that the final product might be different from the one "advertised", so "modifications" are to be expected (as when the female fighters in Bones III ended up a bit too well-endowed). But two aspects don't sit well with me in this case ...

- Reaper has a pretty good track record, so I did not expect them to make such big changes. I'm more wary of other companies and it's sad that in the future I'll have to be a bit more wary of Reaper, too - waiting till the last moment to log in my choices in the pledge manager for example (something that I cannot see being in Reaper's interest, especially if more and more people are doing it).

- Even expecting a "modification" ... totally abandoning the base goes a bit beyond what I consider "modification" - but of course, we could argue semantics here.

Fact is, the Barge was "advertised" with a base and I was looking forward to that base, to me it was part of the "offer" (after all, we're talking about a paid add-on here, not a free stretch goal). I can see why people say they don't care about the base or they don't need it (if you use it during a tabletop game, the barge might even be easier to handle without a base). But if you also look at the barge as a possible display model (with an undead pirate crew, for example), leaving out the base is a bummer. Without a base, the barge appears to be very low/flat on the water / surface.

Reaper say they tried and I'll grant them that. But ...

- should they not have had a better idea concerning the feasibility of that base before they offered it? Nope, I don't believe that it was a last minute addition, I believe it was planned before the Kickstarter.

- I think it's a bit weak to simply tell backers "Sorry, didn't work, so you'll get no base at all" in an update around the original deadline of the pledge manager. And to appear totally greedy ... a little "compensation" would have been nice. I paid for a certain amount of plastic (the fact that that amount of plastic will be more expensive when it hits the shop is no argument for me here) and now I'm suddenly getting less plastic (and plastic here does not really cover it: it goes way beyond the value of the material, but I hope you understand what I want to express).

And to appear less greedy (I hope): The size or price of that "compensation" would not matter at all to me - the gesture would have counted.

Sorry to be the one who criticizes Reaper on their own forum and disturbs the good mood here ... but that's how I feel about that update at the moment.

I was waiting to see what the base actually looked like before adding it too my order. I'm really glad I held off now ::o:

I really like all the reveals in this update. The Gnomes, fungus, spirit beast and that awesome undead ogre all turned out great. I'd like to add the Dreadmere & Darkreach expansions but it's not in the cards. Somehow my retail list keeps getting longer and longer even as I keep buying more and more.

Cautiously tiptoeing up to the subject of the barge base...

Reading through the section of todays update that gave the reasons for not proceeding with this item it sounds like the manufacturers found it beyond their abilities to make such a large but thin piece of clear plastic that did not distort.

My worry now is that the same problem will be evident in the centre section of the Mystic Portal of the "Fan Favourites" expansion and we will only be able to have it made in ordinary Bonsium.

I honestly don't recall, where was it mentioned that the center would be translucent? I always thought it would be regular Bones.

Well, considering the barge was going to just be a display piece for me, without the base I'll probably hold off on it. Might still get it, but it would definitely need a base of some sort.

I seem to remember it being mentioned as a possibility during the Kickstarter, chasing down exactly where would probably take me until after Bones IV is delivered.

I asked Lady Storm about it a little while ago and her response was;

Ah yes, that's right. Thank you!

I'm so glad we decided to add the Dreadmere expansion to our pledge, that Spirit Beast is so purty! I wasn't going to originally, but MrBoot liked more things in it than I did, so how could I say no? ::D:

While I'm a little sad about the lack of a base, this will make it fractionally easier to store/display in my limited space. *shrug*

The spirit beast really is lovely... and the gnomes are growing on me.

Or, wait...

Is that fungus?

Transluscent, white, or gray it's all the same material. If they don't think it looks good in transluscent it will likely be because they feel something doesn't look right about it... Now I don't know about the harder NewBonesium, but generally plasticity and color are separate with PVC blends.

If the portal isn't done in transparent/translucent plastic, I'm probably gonna cut it out...

      Andowyn Thrushmoor!
It's been awhile since I've painted a plain ol' character miniature. I spent the better part of today working on her and I’m overall pleased with how she came out. I really want to double my skill level by the time Bones V is delivered and I’m proud of my progress! Slowly but surely figuring out how to do faces, this one looks pretty okay, though her right eye is funky.

Since this is my first form post, the picture is her next to my first miniature! It's about four years old and I keep it around the rest of my collection in a place of honor

If anybody here loves cavern terrain and missed DF's first cavern KS KS2, this spring/summer around June DF will have KS6. The theme of KS6 will be Return to the Caverns and should be great fun for those who took part in KS2 or those who are new to DF.

DF had this to say and showed the below teaser pics

We're doing for Caverns what Dungeon of Doom did for Dungeons. A whole new batch of fun pieces to enhance your existing collection, but also completely stand-alone.

      Some of the key features:
New Core Shapes (diagonal wall, convex curves, 1" pieces, etc)
      Passages
Elevation (with stuff that's impossible on graph paper...)
Negative Space pieces (and new Terrain Trays)
      Flashy Pieces (Magnets & LEDs)
      Large pieces (4x4 and larger)

This looks like a very interesting board game with lots of new, fresh ideas and cool artwork (and nice minis - there is even a pledge level for just the minis: around 15 of them for $20 plus shipping):

If you missed the first Gloomhaven Kickstarter (and retail sold out quickly) here is your chance. I backed that game the first time around and could not be happier with the results. Warning ... that box is heavy ...
