Miniature Monday: Do you remove flash from your minis before painting them? If so, how and do your methods vary by material?

Theoretically yes. In practice it's sometimes hard to tell. A lot of my fully painted minis have mold lines somewhere but the most obvious flash is always taken care of. My methods are the same for everything but I use different tools for different materials. For metal minis I use old fingernail clippers, files and sometimes a dremel. For resin, polystyrene and pvc I use sprue cutters, exacto knife and files. Need to get some new needle files and wouldn't mind trying out sanding needles and a seam scraper.

Yes.  And sort of...

X-Acto Knife.  Seam Scraper.  Burnishing Tool.

Some plastics can be very forgiving and I mainly use the seam scraper except for sprue marks.  Some are less forgiving and I use the X-Acto more.  I'll use all of them on metals (though the burnishing tool is good for hard plastics as well).

Edit: Ooops.  And sandpaper / files... I just wish I could find some smaller files... and remember to get them at the beginning of the month.  They aren't as sexy as miniatures, so I forget.

Absolutely.

Usually. I'm still learning how with the bones.

I usually use an x-acto knife and a collection of needle files. With bones I'm finding I need to bring in a third tool as well for the fuzzy post-filing parts: long fingernails. I use them like little scrapers, like clawing the skin off a carrot.

Yes, if possible. Xacto and tiny files are my tools. Mold lines same, may toss in a burnisher. Sometimes I am more successful than others. Sometimes I realize I missed spots after I have primed... usually I leave them if that is the case.

For Bones I just use a sharp Xacto for big blemishes. I leave small ones alone.

Bones I pretty much just use the x-acto.  If it's got bigger problems than that, whatever, it's just Bones.

Metal I use mostly just files and clippers.  My junior high actually had a metal working shop and everyone had a few months of it as part of our elective sampler.  So I'm pretty comfortable filing metal and it usually looks just fine under primer.  I hate the thought of dulling the x-acto blade on the metal, so that is used very rarely.

Weekend Aug 18-20: What'cha doing this weekend? Share, do, and share pictures of the highlights if you can?

I was at Necronomicon Providence this past weekend.  It was full of Lovecraftian goodness.  Pics will follow if anyone is interested.

It actually depends on the mini.  If the flash is very bad, then I will remove it using a knife or file.

However, I've found that a lot of minis from modern boardgames (which is what I've been painting recently) only have very minimal flash and you can often get away without doing any flash removal.  Which is great as I don't particularly enjoy removing flash. ^_^

I try to remove flash, mold lines, etc. if I can.  Sometimes I miss a few and then i have to decide "How much do i care about this?"

On minis, I use x-acto knives and needle files.  I have a seam scraper but I'm not sure I was using it quite right.  I'll try it again when I prep my next set of minis.

Bones - I generally don't bother for the small stuff.  Large Bones that I want to look nice I'll put the effort in on.  Knife & files for the most part.

Everything else - Yes.  Knife & files for the most part.

Bones: Mostly no. If it looks like it will make painting really annoying, use a sharp X-Acto until that is no longer true.

Metal: Definitely. Sharp knife (carving and scraping), diamond files, sanding stick, burnishing tool, clippers.
