60182: Hakon, Iconic Skald WIP

Recommended Posts

This is my first post.

I'm relatively new at this, I've painted fewer than 10 minis, but I really like it.

I have Multiple Sclerosis so my hands shale and my vision gets... weird... sometimes, so I tend to take an incredibly long time.

Here's a recap of the last 17 hours:

My friend I am doing this for is playing a character with only 1 axe, so I removed the second one with wire cutters and used modeling putty to fix where I marred the coat. Still a bit rough.

I might put a dagger in his hand or something. Not sure.

I found that I need to do their faces first because if I mess up a face on an already painted body it is hard to strip and start over.

I noticed that what I thought was hair was actually little robe-orniments so I painted them copper.

All his leather belts and buckles were really hard on my hands!

I didnt want him to look too much like Thor, so I decided he's a warm-colors kind of guy.

I need to learn how to make the metal look reflective like some of you do!

The horn on his back is 'Horn of Gondor' colors.

Good ol 'pencil for scale' picture for a friend.

He probably will take me another 6 hours or so to finish, but I had to quit to sleep for now.

Taking time to look or comment means a lot to me, you guys are great.

Thanks!

Hope I can finish him tomorrow!

Why do 2 pictures keep randomly loading below this point? I keep deleting but they just come back. Halp!

He looks wonderful and you are ahead of where I was on my 10th mini! I like the colors you have chosen, the face is fantastic and I really like the horn.

To make your metallics look more reflective, you can shade and highlight them as you would anything else. You can use a darker metal color or mix a little of a regular color into your metallic to shade with. You can use a brighter metal to highlight with. You can even use a tiny touch of silver to highlight gold with, just on edges and "bright spots".

This looks really nice!

Agreed.

If I had been on that level with my 10th mini, frustration and anger would've never come into my life. :poke:

No - really now - that one looks really nice! Keep it up

Whatever limitations you are dealing with certainly don't manifest themselves in the quality of your work. The Skald is progressing WONDERFULLY. The Lad is a potential masterpiece.

Great job on him, I like the how you used the horn of Gondor, (always wondered what happened to it after Denethor went mad). Looking forward to seeing more of your work, if this is where you're at on your 10th or so mini, I'd say you have a great deal of talent.

Thank you. The MS is a massive obstacle. I take forever to paint anything and it can be wildly frustrating when my hands shake.

Thank you again, it is so encouraging to read such nice things.

I don't know what happened to it. Denethor had the pieces to yell at Gandalf... then gone. Hmm.

Thank you as well. I will post more minis as I do then, but I don't do much in general.

Presenting the Tin Man, another member of the Oz Gang from the game Twisted by Demented Games.

While I did keep him fairly basic, I'm happy with how he turned out. Unfortunately my inability to photograph metallics properly has kinda ruined my piccys of him.

Hello everyone, here are pictures of 02811, Dain Deepaxe. This one took me a little longer to finish. There is so many details on this model, it's amazing. This Dark Heaven Legends model was sculpted by Werner Klocke.

Presenting my Beastman Champion and true child of Atmos (In my own fantasy setting I base some of my Games Workshop stuff in, Beastman are a race of former humans who were changed by worshipping an ancient, goat-headed god called Atmos. Occasionally, an actual goat-headed Beastman will be born amongst them and will be considered Atmos's offspring, they then get all the best food and stuff and grow up to be one of the leaders or shamans of the various tribes.) Who is from the Warhammer: Underworlds range by Games Workshop.

I'm super pleased with how this guy turned out, but I really need to buckle down and actually finish one of these Underworlds sets.

Presenting Angry Joe, the last of my Survivors from the Gigalion expansion from Kingdom Death. He believes the best defence against monsters is to wear a suit made of their skin.

Had a lot of fun painting this one, Gorm armour is my favourite set despite all the little details, now I just need to paint the Gigalion itself.

I finished this Mountain Troll.  It's kind of ironic, I painted him so he gets off my shelf of shame but due to his forward lean pictures were difficult so he is photographed literally ON my shelf of shame .  It's not just a shelf, I also have bins of shame in the closet but that's another topic.  I originally thought I'd give him a rocky hide and a paler fleshy underbelly but the underbelly turned out a lot darker than my original thoughts, but I still like it anyway.  The closeups show the transition between that tone and the hide, it's on his inner arms and upper inner thighs as well because that seemed natural to me.  The thing I am unhappy with is that he doesn't "pop".  I really liked the look of the craggy hide and how he looked after the Strong Tone wash so I was too scared to highlight him very much because I was afraid to ruin it.  I don't drybrush very well and when I layer I feel like I'm stumbling along in the dark so you can see one layer on his hide and the rest is just some edge highlights.  I'm still working on layering but it seems hard.  Anyway, on to the pictures.  Hope you guys like him.
