(menu similar to Starbucks; with some changes per Fed guidelines fer skoolkidz) Definitely against it. Caffeine has a negative return on investment, thus requiring more to get back to almost the same level with an accumulation factor that continues to give negative results. Don't get me started on sugar, because, let's face it, kids aren't going to be drinking strong black coffee. Now... don't get me wrong. I'm totally addicted to coffee and sugar (but not at the same time). It's not easy to get off of. But I have strong feelings even if I have issues... lol Edited September 18, 2017 by Grayfax

Question the 18th of September: What do you think of High Schools having a built-in, school district approved, Coffee Bar?? (menu similar to Starbucks; with some changes per Fed guidelines fer skoolkidz) My initial reaction when I heard about this was a curmudgeonly, "skoolkidz don't need that! we didn't have that back in my day!!" Then I thought about the craptastic menu my HS did offer... ...and my inner skoolkid took over and as a result I find I am for any food upgrades possible. 1 hour ago, LittleBluberry said: If the question is "would I like a Starbucks in high schools" my answer is "no". This particular venue was going to be called "The Daily Grind" ...might already be a franchise that could be looked up. 1 hour ago, LittleBluberry said: But given that the cafeteria line is very long and my kids don't like the food, I would totally support a café that served hot beverages and muffin-type pastries as long as efforts were made to keep portions reasonable and sugar contents low-ish. Those federal guidelines for:' food fit fer skoolkidz' attempt to accomplish all that. IIRC the muffins and such were going to be whole wheat. 1 hour ago, Paradoxical Mouse said: Mouse finally has worked up her courage to answer one of these (don't pick on her). Question the 18th of September: What do you think of High Schools having a built-in, school district approved, Coffee Bar?? (menu similar to Starbucks; with some changes per Fed guidelines fer skoolkidz) I am for it under certain conditions. The school or school district needs to be the one running it. None of these franchise things like the Taco Bell cart at my old school selling reheated bean and cheese burritos for $2. Staff it with lunch ladies, keep it to a limited menu. None of those soy latte with 3 flavor shots, no whip, add in whatever stereotype for overly picky rich kids here. Coffee, teas, hot chocolate, iced coffee, and a blender for 'coffee smoothies'. Also since the school and/or school district will be running it, it can be stocked with the same snacks that the cafeteria sells during breakfast and lunch (pre-wrapped cookies, pre-wrapped pastries, pre-wrapped sandwiches). Basically, look at what public colleges do and scale it appropriately. It'd be a good way for students to get their caffeine that doesn't rely on sodas or 5-Hour Energy shots. It might even put a dent in the business of the 3 coffee shops around my old HS campus
knarthex
The one in my son's school will be run by the students, under the supervision of the cafeteria staff, and all profitsfrom the operation go back to the scoop for extra curricular activities...
Marvin
Swipe left. Kids don't need coffee and all that. Symptom of cultural decay.

I'm not a fan of coffee shops but if it was done this way I'd be ok with it. Our school is tiny compared to most but it still has a small student run concession with some junk food, pop and microwavable stuff.
Auberon
I was so busy working this weekend I forgot to save the world. 11 hours ago, Dilvish the Deliverer said: Today's question is brought to you by the letters: T, G, and P. As long as it is in some way managed by the school and not just slotting in a corporate store I suppose I'm ok with it.

As for caffeine addiction, remembering the amount of pop cans lying everywhere back in my day (80s), and seeing how energy drinks are pretty common today, I'd say that caffeine isn't something new to them.
Cyradis
My campus has a few tea and coffee shops. When Starbucks entered the main food court area, they forced Celestial Seasonings (local tea brand with other cafe goods in the campus shop) to stop serving coffee. Starbucks still gets to serve tea. Really ticked me off. Not that Starbucks is there as much as insisting on a bad double standard. But eh, got three other local cafe/coffee/tea places on campus in addition to campus sponsored stuff so I can go to those instead. Or brew in the basement like the tiny troll I am.
Dr.Bedlam
I'm all for it; that being said, I'd like to see any sort of improvement to facilities that the school boards could AGREE on, other than more and better sports stadiums and equipment.

(menu similar to Starbucks; with some changes per Fed guidelines fer skoolkidz) Without specific details around how it's run, it's hard to give a strong opinion either way. If it was setup as a normal coffee bar then I would probably be against it - I'm generally wary about corporations having free reign on campus. However, if it was managed so that the school's and students interests were better taken into account (eg students working there, profits partly going back to the school and a whole raft of other ideas people posted etc) then I would be okay with it. 1 hour ago, Cyradis said: My campus has a few tea and coffee shops. Stuff like this is why I am wary about corporations having free reign on campus. Although in this case, I blame the school as much as Starbucks.
