spartan
Hello, I intend on following the craft article on painting Elladan Elf Ranger on the weekend, I did however want to make him into a renegade Drow. Does anyone have any suggestions on mixes for drow skin and hair that I could brew up? Cheers Spartan
Errex
There are two main schools for painting drow these days. School One, paints drow in human black tones (namely, dark browns), and hair is sligtly bone colored, very reminiscent of Storm from X-Men. School Two, prefers the use of warm mid greys for the skin, with hair being a little on the greyish/blueish side of white. Both schools evolved from the observation that solid black drow looked not good at all.
zaphod
Bah, I choose school 3 which is the classic AD&D look epitomized by the snappy artwork of Erol Otus and others... Various shades of purple, magenta, black and such... cool stuff :P
Jester
Ditto that, Zaph!! http://jesterspeed.home.comcast.net/images/minis/drow00.jpg LOL! Although, I know a few who prefer the albino look...
zaphod
Ah, but then they are not Drow! Dark elves, especially int he GW universe are not classic Drow, rather evil elves as far as I know. Also, I really don't like the brown hued drow. Not exotic enough at all. An dnot only that, it is simply too HUMAN.
Errex
Got me there, Glyn and Robert, But, you see, your drow aren't really a School Three, but a variation on School Two. You have a black basecoat, and add any shade to make it lighter for the highlights. End result, the mid tone is not solid black, but a shade of black mixed with blue or purple (a "grey", since it mixes black with any lighter hue). Your approaches work because they provide a certain organic look to the drow skin, while also making it readily different from human skin tones. bushido
For mine, which I hope to have pictures of soon, I used a dark purple base and mixed in a pale flesh color. This gave it an almost natural look, while still retaining an exotic hue. The hair I painted like a platinum/bleached blonde.

Mourningcloud
actually the old school drow a la the oft imitated but never duplicated erol otus is almost purely black, with the barest hint of highlight, which could arguably be called either a brownish or magenta hue (depending on the age, condition, fading, and beverage rings and/or soda spillage of your module ) and in the words of the master himself in the original fiend folio "inky black skin" but hey, he only invented the race that being said, i always preferred the very subtle brown highlights of a larry elmore drow, a la the original cover of the very first drizzt book, the crystal shard. then again, i always preferred realistic looking paint jobs, which is why i think most nmm looks like a japanese manga cartoon (not the feel i want for my dungeon crawls), although Jen Haleys and Annes gold nmm sometimes make my bladder control less than reliable. my preferred method for highlighting this overused and now less than exotic race is black undercoat with subtle highlighting using get this: old school Ral Partha dragonscale metallic cremes -specifically the metallic bronze color. dang, now i feel old am i the only cat who still owns this rare and highly treasured peice of mini memorabilia? or dares to use it? anyway, i'll post pictures as soon a i purchase a digital camera (this week) but i must say the outcome is somewhat...realistic looking. Morgan Devalis
Anyone have an idea as to Marike Reimer painted her corrupted female elf? I love the look of those, and it reminds me of the dark elves from the Lineage 2 game.
