Paint It Black

Right then, here's another question about the Reaper paint line. The last question was two months ago but I still feel like I'm bugging everyone. Anyway, I've decided to finally take the plunge and do some serious paint ordering for my solo game miniatures. Before I order at the end of the month (to get that Diva model for nothing), there seems to be a hiccup: there are a few different black paints in the line.

I'm looking for a black to basecoat... black, funnily enough. There's Pure Black, Dragon Black, Noir Black, Nightmare Black, etc. Which of these (and the others not listed) would be closest to Citadel's Abaddon Black? Some of the blacks have a blue hue, brown hue, or whatever for different looks, but it's hard to tell from the sample mockups which ones have those hues and which don't. If anyone could break those down for me, I'd be grateful.

Pure Black doesn't have a hue. You can see it in use on my Rainbow Dragon WIP. And I'm pretty sure the Coal Black doesn't have any hues but you can only get that in the Holiday Paint set and there's no word if that will be coming back out this year. Also, Reaper's black primer is hueless.

Pure is black black

Dragon is black? black as well (I think it's been awhile since I used that one, mainly use Pure)

Noir is I wanna say worn t-shirt black. Again, it's been awhile

Nightmare is blue black

EDIT: Isn't Coal black the green-black one? I might be thinking of the green-black color in the P3 line.

Pretty much Pure or Dragon will cover yah.

Everyone's already said what I was going to, so I'll just add that for a lot of the blacks, the tint won't become really apparent until it's thinned. Sidenote: If you're looking for a brownish black, Walnut Brown is a nice choice.

If you just want a straight black with no tint, go with Solid black (HD) or Pure black (MSP). I don't have any Citadel paints, so I don't know what tint it has, if any.

Huzzah!

No one has mentioned my favorite black - Deadly Nightshade, but it is really a purplish black.  ItIt has already been said but if you are looking for an untinted black then I would go with Pure Black or Solid Black.  Dragon black works also but I have had very little experience with it and it is designed for reaper bones.

Oh and lastly, you are not wasting anyone's time here.  We all love this hobby and are glad to answer any questions you have.  This is Reaper Peeps are the best!

Dragon black is an HD black paint that makes pure black look like super dark charcoal grey. I use pure black as my workhorse black for shades and such, but I use dragon black when it absolutely has to be black. The Bones line of paint is not specifically formulated to work for bones (per what reaper has said previously) It is just a different branding for HD paints (and not relabeling of old HD colors that they want to make clear work on bones too. They work fine on metal.

Of the actual black as black paints, I love Solid Black. Lays down a quick basecoat, and layers better than other blacks I've used. (To be fair, I haven't played around as much with Dragon Black because I had already married Solid Black by the time it came out. Because I loved it enough to marry it. ;->)

I'd be curious how you find Dragon Black.  The new Bones HD paints all seem so nice.
