Are you referring to the new BONES line of paints? I thought they were the same as the MSP and was different only in name. So that means that you also have problems with the MSP metallics? Does the new Bone paints have equivalent metallics that the MSP line?

Yes, I was referring to the BONES line of paints.  The metallics from that line are quite different from the older MSP ones.  I don't know if the colors are similar, I got frustrated with MSP metallic paint years ago and never use them.

Misery loves company (so the saying goes).

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who has had difficulties.

I was working on the HK Assassin Droids and through my own lack of planning/foresight, ended up wanting to change the color of one of the droids.  It didn't go easily putting the gold-toned over the silver-toned.  And then trying to put down a coat of red over the gold?   Ick.

I here Vallejo Air has very good metallics as well...  This probably doesn't help you though.

I have found many lines of metallics can be hit or miss.  Some of mine from Reaper are great others seem a little off but I have also had the same problem with P3 metallics as well.

vallejo model air metallics are good, but they are very very very shiny and there is not much variation in color between the "silvery" line - meaning steel, aluminum, gunmetal, mithril and sliver all look about the same.  great for airbrushes though!!  lots of coverage.

Metallics do seem to dry more quickly out on the palette. I tend to work with smaller pools. I'll put out a smaller drop than I would with a matte paint, and when it starts getting gummy, put out another small drop, etc.

If I want them thinner for layering, I add medium rather than water. Matte medium or airbrush medium from an art store would work. If you happen to already have Reaper Brush-On Sealer (or Wash Medium), those also work. Medium is thicker than water so it holds the metallic flake in suspension better. (All brands of metallics will have a flake, so this is a useful product if you want to paint with thinned metallic regardless of brand.)

Reaper's commitment to being able to put non-toxic on the bottle does mean that their metallic formulations differ somewhat from what some other brands may offer. I agree that the metallics in the Bones HD line are very nice. There are some really great colours, particularly in the yellow metals. But I use the MSP line ones regularly, too. I also use Vallejo Air regularly for silver metals. Their yellow metal selections are a bit... odd.

Scale 75 metallics are the best...

Period

They are very good.  But if you have a chance to try the Warcolour metallics or the ones from Dark Star (molten metals), do yourself a favor and see how they work for you.
