Invisible Thumb has joined the quest for a random rainbow painted dragon

Recommended Posts

Stuck my thumb in the box of unpainted bones and pulled out a Kyphryxis.

must unbag bag and dry fit, trim mold lines and scrub, but first, the random colors...

15, ah what could that mean?  I'll look later.  Let's roll another.

image.jpg.68a12f65bc70e74b682122a57bf06651.jpg

seven!  Good.  Nicely spaced numbers.  Will look it up in a minute.  For the third roll...  Well darn gotta wait for the full minute so the time shown is different...  Finally!

oof!  One!  Critical miss.  Well, it's probably a boring color at the top of the table.  Let's see what this means:

15: mint green

7: olive green

1: fire red

huh.  Whadaya know.  Time to go see what I've got for colors... (To be continued)

Weelll, I've got two of the three colors on the shelf.  My closest to Mint Green however is my good ol buddy Alien Goo.  So I've gotta ask myself, are you crazy enough to paint a dragon with primary color Alien Goo?

image.jpg.0d82661012101546cf0522587b211124.jpg

alternatively, I can throw mint green in the cart when I make my order for the month. I may do so regardless, now that I've seen this gap in my paint collection.  Maybe add moth green to it as well since I have had my eye on it.

decisions, decisions. . .

The alien goo is much more yellow than the mint green is. The mint has tinges of blue instead to it. The goo probably is better with the olive green, imo (you and others may disagree). Use what you'd like on those two - mint green was one of the "weird" colors I put in anyway!

Yay for another mint green roller too though! Mine is erm.... vibrant!

You've also been added to the WIP list!

Sweet, the quest-giver approves my substitution.  This dragon might be a bit hard to look at with the neon green color along with red.  I need to decide on a scheme.  It is two months early for a holly jolly dragon, and watermelon is more of a summer thing.  I'm going to look to nature for inspiration.  Found a few pics online of bright green geckos with red stripes and spots.  (Unfortunately they didn't have wings).

Yay, a cheering section.  Wait, did I leave the fridge open?!

Oh, and the obligatory progress report:

mold lines trimmed, dry fitted.  After the photo, she got scrubbed and is sitting out drying.  Now to decide what color liner will work best.  Maybe some experimenting is in order...

Glued all but the base and one wing.

image.jpg.0253fa365483f23e3bdf662f0b017607.jpg

superglue seems sufficient for this one.  I won't be green stuffing, I'm pretty happy with the fit.

now, I don't remember how the stars system works for this challenge.  I intend to only use my three colors with black and white, but I am using colored liners as well to prime.  I do plan to mix my colors too, just keeping the pure color prevalence ratios in order of the roll.

Here I've applied green liner to the wings, red liner to the body, and a mix of the two to the base.  Now for base coating.  The general plan is to do the wings in olive green with maybe some red veining or on the tips.  Scales will be bright alien goo green with a reddish undertone? Maybe? Base will be all kinds of brown/grey from mixing.  Should be fun.

Started off the night with a fairly green, partially base coated dragon.

Finished the night with fully base coated and more red dragon.

other than hang red down the back and a mix of white and olive green for the underbelly, there was a lot of washing with a red/black mixture all over the bright green.  The bright green will return, but I need to be patient and apply it carefully.  Maybe I'll work on the wings next and put off the scales a little longer.

Made some progress finally so I'll plop some pictures down here.

Sorry no pics between the following steps.

mixed the red with black and lined/shaded much of the body scales

mixed the olive with white and went back over the belly scales

then went with straight alien goo one scale at a time to bring the edge up to where I want it.  I could try highlighting further with a bit of white, but that will wait til later.  I think I'll have to glaze with a mix of alien goo with a tiny bit of red and/or black to smooth things out, but hopefully keep the contrast there still.  Not sure tho.  I'm open to suggestions.

I think I need to decide now what to do with the wings.  I've put enough red on her that I don't think I need to add more to the wings, but I still like the idea of veiny wings.  I suppose it doesn't have to be straight red.  Could mix up a darker color for the veins.  Or go another route and mix up a pink color and do more of a mottling pattern.  I'll take input on this one too.

It's been a couple weeks since I've updated.  I was pretty stuck on the wings. Tried a couple different schemes.  Ended up sticking with a veined look for the under side and colored patches on top.  The spots on top still didn't look right to me until I broke them up with a darker color.

Here is where the wings were before tonight.

bottoms.  Not too far off from what I wanted, just too red.

tops- not the effect I was going for but maybe I can fix it?

...more in a bit.  Putting the youngest to bed.

Here's where it ended up.  Eyes dotted, base dry brushed, and those wings shaded a bit more.  Ended up sticking to just the five colors.  Gonna have to take a break from red and green for a while(until next month anyway)!

First the top view of those spots.  Broken up by the darker lines, I don't mind the spots as much.  Still not exactly the look I was going for, but I'm not inspired to do anything else.

overall I am happy with how she turned out.  Scary enough to counter the Xmas dragon feel.

'Tis the season! I posted this a while ago before is got paint on him. Santac'Laus has featured in the Christmas one-shot games I've run for the last couple of years (and this year is no exception). He's gone from villain to lovable (but weird) friend, who rides a manta-ray-shaped sleigh, pulled by a team of beholders.

If you're one of my players, please don't read the spoiler!

The hat, sack and present were all made with green stuff. The snow was made with snow powder mixed with water effects.

Hello forum family, I wanna share with ya all my most recent fatigue: Marthragul!
I was in doubt if painting it into a realistical Earth dragon, or something more colourful... The Magenta won! :D
And I chose to don't cut corners, so no drybrush, no washes, no feathering... just dear, old layering, shading and glazing
...cause I'm a fast painter, as you know

And, yeah! This took me almost a month of at least two hours per day... basically I hate this dragon now

Enough talking, time for pics :D

I really hope you like it, if you have any question do not hesitate :)
As always every C&C is more than welcome.
      Thank you :)

I painted this guy up, despite having eyes on Gale Force 9's Behir for my personal use. Decided to go ahead and liquidate it in a certain auction site, but so far, no takers. Ah, well. It's still a nice looking mini, so it doesn't hurt to have one around until I manage to finish painting the GF9 Behir... Comments, recommendations, and suggestions are appreciated.

So this is fun, because I can show you folks the Christmas presents I'm working on, so it's like I get to give them twice. Anyway, here's my take on her, really enjoyed going for a winter feel.
