I am not the one taking them from those that won so no clue how much it happens but heard something while there that made me think it was being done by some. I was just beat down by then and knew we would not be getting anything in the auction but got more beat down once we were there and told that the yellow tickets had been depleted. At that point I was just sitting on 1850 RBs knowing they would be given to someone else if we headed out because of Alice being bored or thrown away if we stayed until the end. If it were just me I would have hung out and either given them away at end or hoped to find something near the end for that amount. Not sure I could keep from taking her with me on Sunday next year. :)
Thes Hunter
Between my husband and I, we had 4030 RB. We had one VIP and one regular badge. We bought dinner for him on Saturday. I attended 4 classes and played 2 games. He played 2 games a day and attended one class. We did not ask ReaperBryan to honor the 4400 RB printed on my internet order. We did not go get Reaper bucks from the desk for Him wearing the Maggotcrown T-Shirt we had won from the raffle the night before. We did not trade our $100 RB in for $500 like we were told by our GM to do. (The gm thought ReaperBryan had agreed to $500 for the PFS special and ReaperBryan said he didn't think that was the case.) We did not go to the desk and ask for RB after we took classes, either the four I pre-reged for or the 1 the husband signed up for on the spot. (He did not get RB for that class when he signed up.) We did not do these things because we felt they would be unfair. I see the auction as an extra cool bonus, but not something I have to win. I did score the last classroom paint set for 4800 RB. We had gotten 2000 - 4000 RB from people who had left over RB. This money helped me get the paint set, Pegasus wife get mouselings... and maybe girl-blin an additional thing. I would have ben happy going home with nothing, but I'm glad to have had a few extra bucks so I could make sure the last classroom set went for a decent price. I had the plan of sharing duplicates, and using the duplicates for local paint and takes, but, it appears I will have very few duplicates.
terminalmancer
A couple of years ago, the last auction at the hotel, went really well for FireElemental and I. We had about 2500 reaperbucks, just from the two of us taking classes, and we managed to get a couple of pre-signed boxed sets--Khanjira and Nethyrmaul. I was really excited that year! (We couldn't even travel with Khanjira. I gave it to a friend to paint, and I'm not sure he'll ever take it out of the box.) Last year, we saw significant price inflation. After the first half of the auction didn't go our way at all and we ended up being unable to afford anything we wanted, we threw in with Ludo. They got something nice out of it and then at the end they had some ridiculous number of reaperbucks available, and bought me the most expensive Reapercon mug ever. This year, we threw in early. I think the quantity of items in the auction is not keeping pace with the supply of ReaperBucks.

We had something like 1950 total from VIP package an extra swag bag and 6 classes...oh and daughter dressed up on Sat.

Some then demanded from Bryan what was printed on their registration paper instead of what they should have gotten (which was calculated correctly on the computer systems during registration). This caused a shortage of ReaperBucks initially. Which led to buying back ReaperBucks with raffle tickets. Some people got some good deals on the exchange ratio before supply and demand evened out. Are there people gaming the system? You betcha. Were there people that took a very hard stance and put Bryan in a corner? Yes. Sadly, yes there were. I hope changes will happen before next year. Specifically limiting the gamers from being able to out-earn people that take classes. In the end, though, I was happy to contribute mine to someone on the forums that used them to get a gift for someone else on the forums. I was at the desk when I saw Bryan giving someone (I know who they are, but that is not germane) bucks when they showed their itinerary... So I went and got my itinerary, and as I was picking up someone else's vip stuff, I showed theirs as well. came to quite a few bucks... But NO ONE told me it was a computer error... 9 hours ago, Grayfax said: All in all the Auction part works well. It was the steps leading up to the auction that caused people to have feelings about it. Even then, not very many that I knew of were upset. Most people understood the difference and worked with what they had. There is going to be pooling. It is an accepted practice and in the end, it is still an auction and you are bidding against some other groups doing the same thing. I liked how the forumites handled themselves in this area. Ludo's group went after a large paint set early on and spent most of the auction dividing it up. It was known that OneBoot was going after the Morihalda sculpt and money was pooled for that. George wanted to get a specific item for Aryanun and was able to do so (and also the Dreadmere map). The auction follows pack law. If you want to be in on the hunt, sort out your prize and your pack early and often and claim the victory. I have no problem with people making a case for what they want and going after it. The only Solo Victors I saw had young girls that they lifted high to do the bidding. It's always harder to bid against a young girl that has the auction fever. That was something I knew she wanted from a forum post... Moderator LordDave Posted October 26, 2017 Moderator Share Posted October 26, 2017 (edited) I only had like 1050 Reaperbucks, which I just gave to a guy that I had hung around with most of the day. Hope he got something nice. I think I had plenty from the Con and had already had a great weekend, so I wasnt too concerned with my little bit of Reaperbucks. I left before the end of the auction with a smile, thinking I may have made another persons day Edited October 26, 2017 by LordDave

I'm still SQUEEing every time I look at it or snuggle with it. It's a good way to keep the brain weasels away. The pooling of ReaperBucks I remember happening in 2007, but it likely started before. Things would get high then, at least to us, but now it seems things are just astronomical. I watched part of the auction via Lyn Stahl's live feed. Highlander
Interesting discussion. I've never attended an auction. Because I've been told consistently over the years that it is impossible to win anything without pooling. Many stories of giant pools spending lots of RB on moderately attractive items. I think I wound up with about $1300-1500 in RB this year ... and gave it away and left, like I do each year. Had I known that my RB might have gotten something, I probably would have stayed. I just might next year.

Morihalda
I've only ever seen the auctions at RCon. People are friendly there and it's still stressful! And Heisler goes so FAST, it's incredible. I think the weird error was a big part of the inflated prices, but at least we know and it will hopefully be okay next year! I pick one thing and hide for the rest of it. Forum folks are good about pooling up together. I go in not expecting much but with hope for one item, because there are just simply way too many people for everyone to get free (!) items.
Members SamuraiJack
I had 1800 RB.. 2 VIP's, 6 classes, 1 survival speed paint and a bonus 100 from Ludo for surviving.. i got 2016 RB from the desk for my class RB.. I already knew at 1700 I wasn't going to get anything big.. I split a class paint set last year for 3500, but there wasn't a whole lot else i needed this year.. 26 free minis, 12 bottles of free reaper paint, and 8 bones minis from classes and speed painting were barely going to fit in my suitcase as it was.. I'd resolved I was going to help other people.. so when the little girl who wanted the shower curtain needed them I threw some at her.. then when the Melons needed some extra for their class paint set, i tossed the rest at them and asked to grab a couple paints out of the box.. Could it be better? sure, but I'm used to the raffles where you get X number of tickets and you put them into the cup/bag for the item you want and your chance of winning is reliant on ratios/percentages.. I don't know how to make it better as a straight up auction..

I pointed out that it was an error and I had received too much, but was told there was a calculation mistake and they were giving out the printed amount anyway. Or at least, that's what the person processing my registration did. I'm not complaining.
