Hmm...maybe I should request Tuesday off as well...neither me or Mr. Mouse are much good at night driving...

When I go I normally leave on Monday afternoon after lunch but before rush hour starts.  Of course I have to go through Detroit and you don't!  Then I drive a long day Tuesday and roll in around noon on Wednesday.

Although last year I DID arrive late Tuesday night in the Denton area as I was making great time on Tuesday and got out ALOT earlier on Monday (before lunch).  I assume you could get an early start on Tuesday and be there well on time Wednesday.

Oh and edited to say you do pick up an hour driving there with the time zone difference.

Well you know what I do.  And I'd call it a bit more than 17.5  More like 18.5 to 19 I'd say.

Yah about 19-20 here also, from the west coast:) Still worth it though, no worries of lost luggage or TSA BS, just that one checkpoint out of New Mexico.

I'll have to discuss it with Mr. Mouse. Maybe more concrete plans will be made closer to the date. I do have parents that reside closer to Chicago, if I wanted to start from there...

Now here's a question: do I plan on a 17.5 hour drive, or fly? I've never gone before, so I'm not sure what to expect bringing back/taking, and I don't know how well minis/paint fly.

For bringing things back, if they do what they did last year (which I'm counting on), you'll be able to bring your stuff to the factory and have them ship it home.  I did this last year so I didn't have to bring back much in my carry-on.

For flying, my personal rule is to travel light.  If it can't be carried on, it ain't coming.  If you're bringing minis to enter, one of Reaper's pistol cases might be an idea.  I have to deal with both security and clearing pre-customs, so my plan is to carry the pistol case external to the bag given it is labelled Reaper on the front and back and, if necessary, I can open it to show what is inside.  I figure if it was in the bag it might subject itself (and myself) to greater scrutiny.  Remember that security is much easier if you think of it as doing what you can to make their day and job easier.  I didn't have any issues with clearing security or customs going in or coming back, excepting that I cleared customs at 7 am in a mad rush because they had to do 6 different planeloads in 20 minutes in a French airport.  :zombie:   If you're friendly, compliant, and don't make trouble it ought to be pretty smooth.

As to whether driving or flying is better - flying is more expensive but overall should be quicker for you and less exhausting.  Driving has the advantages of letting you carry more stuff, and giving you transport to use while at the con.  That's VERY handy!  But being exhausted on arrival can wear on you a lot, as you may not get a chance to fully rest up.

Last year my first day was 27 hours long, and I never got more than 5 hours of sleep a night after that.  By sunday I was just about walking dead.  Flight selection from my location was limited and compelled me to take a very early morning flight.

This year my plan was to nestle Reapercon into a larger 3-week US trip, so AFAIK myself and Guindyloo will be driving up from New Orleans on Tuesday so we get a full day of rest before the con.  Wednesday is only a Meet N' Greet, in terms of what's going on, but I count it is a full con day.  Personally I think it's the best day and wouldn't miss it for anything, but I like the slow warm-up day.

So that's a big wall of text, but should help you sort your options out a bit.  If you have any more Q's, ask away!

Does much go on during the first and last days? I'm trying to figure out how much leeway I need to give for travel.

The first day is a full day of classes just like Friday and Saturday. Sunday there are classes in the morning and the convention ends with the Reaper Auction using the ReaperBucks you have accumulated over the weekend.

So it sounds like I should shoot for arriving wednesday and leaving late sunday or early monday.

The last couple of years I've stayed til Monday and hung out with the other sculptors and such after the con a bit.  This year though, I'm going to have to leave as soon as the con ends on Sunday because we will need to make it home at a decent time on Monday so my son can go to school the next day. That means I need to make it to Kansas City on Sunday night.

Your son has school on Labor Day?

No, I have to make it home at a decent time on Monday (Labor Day) because my son starts high school the next day (Tuesday, Sept 4).  Kansas City is about half way home.  If we can make it to KC Sunday night, then we can be home by supper on Labor Day.

We're up in the air at this point.  The original plan was to drive down through Little rock so my wife could see her 1/2 brother for the first time in 20 years.  However, our son has asked us to babysit the 3 youngest grand kids and weekend and with the Wappels not going, Mrs SJ is not as inclined to go as Cathy is her hang out buddy.

Sure, I can come by myself, but half of the point of our trip is so my wife can see her SCA friends and mentor who moved down there.

Irrelevant to the rest of your post, but I was amused by that first sentence. I think going by air might be the only way I go this year. I’ve driven twice, but flew the first time. In order to avoid traffic on Monday (seriously, spent 4 hours once on a nominally 45 minute drive one holiday), flying home mid Monday might be my only acceptable option.

This is why we will probably (If we go haha) leave early Sunday morning, so we are home by mid-day Monday. Normally, it's not till after mid-day, afternoon time Monday that traffic gets crazy (probably because everyone decides to wait till last minute to come home)
