Just do your best work and concentrate on one piece at a time. Flipping back and forth between multiple entries makes it feel like you aren't accomplishing anything. It's a great experience because you can push yourself to achieve high quality results, and be judged only on your ability to meet the "standard" and then get feedback on what to do differently. This is the only competition I enter personally. I'm only interested in improving my own abilities right now. This is going to be easier said than done, but try to get out of the mindset that you’re “painting for a competition.” All that will do is stress you out further. Like Clearman said, you’re really only competing against yourself at Reapercon, so instead of striving to paint well enough to win a competition, push yourself to paint to the best of your ability. Look through what you’ve painted before and pick out one or two figures that you’re most proud of and study them - what did you do right on them and what could you have done better? Be honest with yourself. Then take that knowledge to your next figure. Can you replicate the things you did best? If not, why? Can you improve on the things that you didn’t do so well with before just by the experience you’ve gained since you painted the figure? If not, now you know something that you need to specifically work on. That's basically the only reason I'm going to enter something, to see where I'm at. A medal would be great, but is not my goal For the last few years, I was going to do that at Ghengis Con, since Heisler and his people ran it the same way there, but never ended up going for reasons, one of which was never finishing the mini I was working on. Being a local con, it was always "Well, there is always the next con." My biggest "fear" here is pulling my usual procrastination, and not actually entering something. I've never painted my best with a hard and fast deadline like I'm trying to do here. Deadlines do actually help me, but they're usually the type of "I need to get these goblins painted by Sunday's game", which means tabletop standard is good enough. My best work - well, it gets worked on when I feel like it. I appreciate the supportive words here, though. While on the hangouts with some folks that play 40K, we have been talking about stuff, and I went to look for a figure that I knew I had, and didn't want, that @Chaoswolf thought was cool, and found the following: Now this is the basis for my mechanical Obliterators that I painted way back in 2003? and brought to Reapercon last year where they got a silver medal in the open category Speaking with one of the judges afterwards (@dks) we discussed them, and the painting dragged them down, as I said old paintjob... Well, with my painting funk in its 4th month, I was thinking that maybe, I could re do a new one from scratch, and with all the sculpting things I have learned, as well as painting techniques, I might be able to do better... Now Reaper forbids entering the same piece twice, but this would be a reprisal of something I did years ago.... Would this be legal as a new entry? @Heisler care to comment? ReaperCon is still slightly over 6 months away. How many minis do you usually paint in that length of time? Is half of that number going to represent a reasonable number for minis for judging?
