Question for Friday, Nov 10th:

Who here is ready for Saturday?

Poppies...

Flags...

Not really ready but I've got my poppies and the wife has a flag out front. I take Remembrance Day and День Победа (May 9th russian version) seriously. I personally feel Canada doesn't do enough for our veterans. The wife and I try to explain the importance of what our soldiers did for us to the kids. My dad was a bit too young to serve in WW2 but was friends with a bunch of neighbours that served. Little rural towns like mine sent a large percentage of men and some women overseas. Dad had 1 uncle in WW1, 1 uncle was a bren gunner at the tail end of WW2, 1 uncle was drafted but stayed in Canada and a cousin that was lieutenant of a Sherman platoon. Mom had an uncle that was in the infantry. My grandpa's best friend was in the South Saskatchewan Regiment and I knew him well but he wouldn't talk about the war. Only recently found out that he was involved in the Dieppe Raid as well as the 44-45 campaign in NWE. He was a radio operator for the artillery FOO. One family who's land I now own had one son in tanks (badly wounded in the face and arm), 1 in the airforce and one in the merchant marine convoys. One of the few vets I knew that would talk was a medic on a hospital ship during D Day. He said he was never in any real personal danger during the war but he dealt with the costs of being at the front.

My wife's grandfather was in the Soviet Army. We can't find any concrete details of his service but he was badly wounded in 43 and the timing and area makes it likely he was involved in the Kursk battles. He had a nice set of steel teeth courtesy the soviet government when my wife knew him. Her uncle said that grandpa had served about 3 months before being wounded and it was a couple of years before he recovered and was discharged.

There's a small ceremony at the school we'll attend and I'll probably watch a bit of the ceremony in Ottawa and then force the kids to watch some war movies with me.

We remember.

I think not enough people understand the impact that the war had, especially in the small communities. In Saltcoats the population was 491 in 1916, and yet they lost 79 men in WWI because so many answered the call. That's something people have to reflect upon.

No, that sort of thing is more reserved for Anzac Day over here.

I am enjoying a weekend off with my boy, though. Still need to get something for dinner mind you, so I don't know if I'd say I'm really ready for Saturday considering its now past noon.

Weekend Project: Sat-Sun, Nov. 11-12: Snap and share a pic if you went to a parade, got a free lunch, raised a flag, participated in Singles Day, etc.

(And, had you ever heard of "Singles Day"? e.g. four lonely ones:  11, 11)

Weekend Question: What is the optimum moment (GMT)  to post a daily question, remembering if it is 4AM in Denton, it is 10AM in London, and there is only an hour left of the day in Auckland??  (11PM ... 2300)

The only one I`m aware of is Singles' Awareness Day (Feb. 14). Nov. 11 is always Remembrance Day, and I wouldn't commemorate anything else during that day.

This one seems to be the PRC's answer to Black Friday. (So, more of an evil plot by marketing majors... )

(Cf: the singles day link in the previous two posts.)

Pics for the weekend would include Scouting for Good Drive

Berni wanted onion rings.

Thing is, we're picky about onion rings. There can be NO sugar in the batter. Sweetened onion rings are gross. So we went to Red Robin, where the onion rings are very good, albeit a tad expensive.

Place was crawling with veterans, as Red Robin apparently offered a discount yesterday. We got the onion rings, albeit from a rather harried waitress in between beer deliveries to the end row of booths.

Shooda known better than to try and eat out on Vets Day.

I didn't do much of anything yesterday except finish off an exchange mini.  I've never done Singles Day, and only been on Alibaba a few times, but the sales growth for a fictional holiday is crazy impressive.  $25 billion increase in just 6 years...

It doesn't really matter to me.  If its not up before I head out to work I'll usually check the thread once I get back.

I'm based in HK and I don't have a preference on posting time.  I'm on here during my mornings (while eating breakfast in the office) so I'm generally one of the last people to post on the question.  It's good though - lets me get the last word in. ::D:

This is the first I've ever heard of Singles Day.

I don't think there's an optimum moment.  "The day is defined as starting from when the question is asked and continuing for 24 hours or until the next question is asked, whichever comes first."

I was unaware of singles day. However, back when I was single, on Valentine's Day myself and my two best female friends and our (stereotype fulfilling) gay best friend would all hang out and watch silly horror movies together. It was pretty entertaining, and none of us were all that annoyed at being single at that point. But it was a good excuse to gather for shenanigans.
