Newbie here, Do large miniatures exist?

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the proper place to ask but I thought I would give it a shot.  I started building gunpla a few weeks back and have been looking to broaden my horizons with an airbrush setup.  I've been researching different paints the past few days and as a consequence, stumbled on fantasy miniatures (Warhammer, Reaper, goblins, dragons sort of stuff). As a gamer, I'm loving some of these designs but the tiny size of miniatures is not my cup of tea.  I'd prefer something larger, akin to unpainted figurines or scale models.

Can you get larger sized miniatures of this style? If so, are they still called miniatures or would they be considered scale models or something else? I've had a look around but could only find the usual military, gunpla, sci-fi scale model stuff. Thanks!

Welcome!

There are different ways to go about this.

I also like to paint larger minis ( only with brush)

Reaper and many other companies carry some big monsters.

For example Ma'aldrakar ( Bones III ) is a huge fiveheaded dragon.

Other big dragons like T'raukzul are also impressive.

And they are many Giants who are basically as big as a 54mm miniature.

There are many larger monsters on which you could practice.

Reaper discontinued most of their Masters Series Line.

But these are still available through resellers or Ebay.

54mm miniatures in fantasy or scifi style,.

If you want bigger, search for Busts, 75mm miniatures and larger.

There are many companies who sell these.

Commercial links are not allowed here.

I sent you a PM.

Scale 75 does some gorgeous figures, but I'm skeptical about their treatment of intellectual property right now, so I'm hesitant to recommend them. Miniaturas Andrea is another fairly large company that does big resin figures (though they have rather more historical subjects than fantasy subjects).

But there are many companies that do large fantasy figures.

Your best bet is probably to search with a term like

  • 90mm fantasy figures

Popular scales are 75mm, 90mm, 100mm, and 120mm.

Hadn't heard that about Scale 75.

Came up during a recent kickstarter project that several of the sculpts were likely derivative works of flat art and that hey hadn't arranged to license the original art. They made changes to the disputed pieces after the end of the project (and without discussing the issue with backers), but many of us found the situation very disturbing.

That said, they really do have beautiful pieces; their (or perhaps "their") artists are very good and their sculptors are exceptional.

There are lots of big Bones if you just check out the Reaper store!

However, I actually came to this forum looking for pretty much the same thing, I wanted big dragons and monsters and had little interest in the smaller figures.  Now I am obsessed with both the large and small figures!  To be honest I think I even prefer the smaller human sized figures!  I don't have an airbrush (yet) which may be why i prefer the smaller figures instead of having to brush paint the huge beasties.  It's very easy to to get trapped in this wonderful hobby so keep an open mind when searching around!

Like @Glitterwolf wolf said Ma'aldrakar and T'raukzul are huge!  I think about 12 inches tall.  But there are a lot of other Bones dragons that are 6-10 inches.  I started by looking on eBay just to get an idea of what was out there and to learn some of the company names which then help you focus your search.

Is it 'most modern music is indirectly derived from Elvis' level,  'same pose, outfit, face and hair' level, or something in between?

"Derivative work" is a legal term of art indicating that the piece is covered by the copyright of the source. I make no claim about whether that is an accurate description, but many of the artists here and in the project comments section seemed to have little doubt.

Many manufacturers make models in other scales. While we tend to work with 28mm scale, others do 54 mm (where a person would be about 2x as large as one of our figures, or about 3 inches tall) and 72mm is also popular (about 5" for a human-sized model).

Doing a search for 54mm or 72mm scale models should return some great results.

my favourite company for models (monsters really) is Mierce Miniatures.  they are fairly costly though. based on UK, they do lots of larger resin monsters. Their Chimera (done by the best monster model sculptor around IMHO - Daniel Cockersell) is the best one i've ever seen.   they are fairly big... i think the tallest ones are 9-12 inches tall.

It is “take someone else’s art and make a sculpture of it”, very much the exact same pose, outfit, face and hair level.
