squidders
I love PaintShopPro 8.0... been using it for some time now and it does everything I have asked of it. It's dead easy to resize images, crop images, modify backgrounds, use layers, add solar flare... If you can get it for free I highly recommend it
GoldenSkeleton
Hi, I really like Paint Shop Pro also ! I've been using Paintshop Pro professionally for years. It does 95% of the functionality of Photoshop but at a fraction of the cost if you wish to be legit !. where it falls over in comparison to Photoshop is when it comes commercial printing processing using CMYK profiles and optimisation etc. A big proportion of Photoshop's cost comes from the Pantone systems held within etc I'd imagine !? There aren't many huge improvements in version 8 ( In fact I prefer using version 7 still for most of my rasterised/bitmap graphics work still ) However one addition that version 8 has that may be of use to you; is a really easy to use Macro type thingy-ma-jig feature. I don't mean "zoom" I mean macro as in a list of commands that are run automatically. For example: You could set a list of functions for paintshop Pro to do automatically such as: rotate image 90 degrees, then > Adjust brightness > Adjust Saturation/Hue > draw selection area > crop image > save as etc. might be useful at getting all of your photos quickly out of one folder and processed into another etc. The nice bit is that to set the list of commands you just click a "record button", then do your set of commands to an image and when finished save your Macro !! Maybe some of these ramblings may help !
Archaon
I reckon most of the cost associated with PS is that it's basically THE high-end industry standard (95% is a very large exaggeration btw ). I have no idea why Fireworks is expensive (albeit less so than PS), but it seems consistent with Macromedia pricing.
GoldenSkeleton
I reckon most of the cost associated with PS is that it's basically THE high-end industry standard (95% is a very large exaggeration btw ). Sorry, Yes 95 % is a bit high isn't it. What I meant to say is that it does about 95% of the common tasks that I use it for compared to Photoshop ( which I also use of course ). That said I do use a lot of the functions. ( this is for PCs cant speak for Mac versions. ) Also Meant to add that another area where Paintshop Pro falls over is in the airbrush/similar tool department. The Photoshop Airbrush and Eraser tools are so much more polished and smoother. That brings the percentage down a bit, but what a price difference. Wanizame
There's also Ulead.. their Photo Express 4.0 is only a whopping $12.95. heh There's also Ultimate Paint : www.ultimatepaint.com The Pay verion is $35-$50, they have 2 Freeware versions, one is Ultimate FX (it only contains filters 120 of'em), then there's the Ultimate Paint one (96 filters, but has the painting option as well).
