CAV Terran Thunderbird

Recommended Posts

Started working on a Terran Thunderbird, and I don't have pictures yet.  But it's really not much more then primed at this point.

I'm going to do a woodlands camo pattern I think, so I based the whole thing with a sandy tan color and did the dark lining on it.  A friend of mine that Talespinner knows as "my pretend friend Rick" suggested that I start with the lightest color which makes sense.  I used the brown liner to do the dark lining.

Question is what to do next, should I paint most of it green and leave parts tan, and then paint the brown parts, and then finally black?  Or would it be better to paint parts green, and parts brown and parts black?

Also is there anything I should do before I start the camo pattern?

Thanks for the shout out TS.  The short version for my take on woodland camo is base coat with Terran Khaki (MSP 09122), then building the camo pattern with Highland Moss (MSP 09083) and Muddy Brown (MSP 09028) .  Dark line the camo pattern and panel lines with Brown Liner.

Well I was half way there sorta.  I had based coated and darklined everything.  I added the green in and this is what it looks like now.  I may try and get the brown done yet tonight...  I'm not sure I'm super happy with that green.  It was Panzer Aces field green by Valejo, and a drop of Reaper Dark Skin to darken it up a bit.  Still may be a bit light, but I'll see how it looks after I get the brown on it.  I also may go with a 4th color, a few stripes of black green to match the US Army woodland camo pattern.

Here it is with the brown.  Still not quite thrilled with that green.  But it looks better in person then it does in these pictures.

Forgot to mention that I think I'll paint the gun barrels black, the area past the black line

I added some black (black green with a little true black) to it as some lines around the green or brown.  I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.  I still need to redo the black lining and then the glaze/wash that Sgt Crunch mentioned in his article. Also need to do the windshield and maybe a few other touch ups.

Looks great!

Thanks :)  I really owe it all to you, you're article about painting camo was great and made what I always thought of as something fairly tricky to pull off actually kinda easy. :)

I took a picture of the final version but it just is too washed out and the colors don't look right.  I'll try and take a better one soon and post it here.

Brief word of introduction. I know next to nil about CAV. My current interest in it is solely from a painting perspective. With that in mind, please excuse any blunders I make.

So, I'm a painter looking for some cool stuff to paint. I see CAV's mechs. I think "I like mechs, those look cool, I think I'll grab some". Then my eyes flicker upwards towards where it says "10mm scale". I think you can see where this is going.

Long story short, how big are these? It looks like they come on 1" hexes, and $4.99-$6.99 is quite a lot to charge for a small mini (in my opinion, of course).

      Many thanks, all!

I had painted a flail as a test model, and then decided to do a group since it was an easy color scheme.
had too many tags, but it's a pillager, wolverine, flail, outlaw, and poltergeist

So I finally fell into the temptation and got my first ground based sci fi minis!(I do have spaceships.)
A Cataphract, conquerer , and a halberd by Reaper minis came in with my horsman today! Sadly the halberd is missing a piece so it may in end up being returned.
So my first order of business was a small conversion to the cataphract
      Before conversion

And the conquerer has donated the necessary parts for said conversion, specifically his smaller missile pods.

A bit of work with an exacto knife removed said weapons.

And a bit more exacto work to make a spot for the pods on the Cataphract.

Some super glue to assemble the cataphract and voila! It is time for paint!

And don’t worry about the Conquerer, I have a conversion in mind for it too. It just might not be a true mech when I’m done.......

More sci-fi stuff to come soon I hope!
And maybe just maybe I’ll try to make a backstory for these guys.
      Thankyou for looking!
