Back in the late ‘80s, an opponent of mine had some of the first GW multi-part skeletons.  Those things were insanely fragile; they would practially fall apart if you breathed on them.  It was an idea whose time had not yet come...

Grump has about a gazillion and a half of those. The ones where helmets are separate and glued onto the heads.

I don't know how he glued them, but they aren't falling apart.

But sculpting has come a long way since then.

Zvezda had a line of minis called Ring of Rule with some cool roman skeletons called the cursed legion. They are roughly 28mm and I considered buying them but the shop owner let me see inside the box and it was sooo many tiny pieces to glue together. Afterwards I read reviews where a lot of people complained about how hard it was. My wife gave me a BMP model for my birthday from them ages ago and I never finished it because I had to glue every link in the tracks seperately. I worked on it when I had a wrecked knee and was on crutches for a month or so and it nearly got thrown out the window a couple times. Still have it in a box in the basement on the farm. I like putting together mulitpaart minis but there are some limits to how many stinking pieces I want to glue to finish a model. Especially if I need tweezers just to pick the pieces up.

Someone probably should make single-part plastic skeletons. You don't always need skeletons to be superdynamic and if they're basically a chesspiece they should be durable enough. One sprue with like ten varieties with spears and shields, one sprue with hand weapons, then a separate mould for bows and then one for two-handed weapons. I think it could work fairly well. Should be easy to rank up, too.

Deal on right now from Northstar. 5 boxes of plastic minis for the price of 4. Very tempting because I want at least three of these boxes (skellies, heavy dwarves and goblin wolves) but not sure I can swing it right now because I want to top up my Bones V order.

Not a sprue, but you could easily get that variation from the Bones skeletons. Plus you've got the classic skeletons or armoured skeletons to add even more variety.

Full plastic sets tend to be a lot cheaper, though. 30 Bones spearmen is 60 euro, which is nearly twice as much as an Oathmark box.

Bones is great value for ogres and up, individual characters and swarm-style figures but a little iffier for mass infantry from what I've seen.

As an aside, those types of tracks are easy to do with a little practice & proper technique. My primary hobby is armor modeling. I am working on workable (i.e. articulating) plastic Panzer III tracks, with each track consisting of 2 pins & a separate guide horn.

The line has continued to develop at a quick pace. So much to love!

Human cavalry should be out now and undead Revenants next month.

I have to admit I am a big fan of the Oathmark and “X-grave” series of multi-part plastic sets from Northstar. Together they make a brilliant library of parts for kitbashed conversions.

Great quality, lots of character and a decent price.

I've been semi-hibernating when it comes to hobby news.  A quick look around seems to show enough  Oathmark/Wargames Atlantic/Frostgrave/Fireforge kits out there to be dangerous for my wallet and to my pile of shame for that matter..

My latest experiment was putting Oathmark Elf arms onto some Fireforge Byzantine bodies then using 3D printed heads and shields.  Seems to work pretty well.
