MSP Must Haves

Bit of an opinion piece here, but what are the Reaper MSP colors you find that you can't live without? What colors do you think should be in everyone's collection?

 

A list of recommended paints for aspiring artists looking to get started with Reaper MSP.

(Note: This list is neither complete, exhaustive, or required. It is just to provide you with a few ideas about where to start.)

Nightshade purple. It is nearly black, but the purple makes it softer, and more interesting.

Walnut Brown, Bronzed Skin, the liners (though I can't swear that Sepia Liner will fit in, as I haven't tried it yet), Clear Magenta.

I love Dragon Green!  Don't know if its a must have but it is a beautiful deep green!

 

I would venture to say that most people on here would recommend Brown Liner. Lots of people use it to prime their figures.

Not counting black, white, grey and flesh tones....

 

Ritterlich blue. Nightshade. Rust brown. The ochre gold triad. Carnage red. Snow shadow. Dark skin shadow. Corporeal Shadow. Carnival purple.  These always end up on my palette.

Figured Corporeal Shadow and Carnival Purple would end up on here, just wish they still made em.

If you tend to paint human knights a lot your choices may differ from mine, I paint Reptiles and Undead a lot.

There's always something you reach for when you work that just too perfect not to use regardless of the figure. For me it's a bright red (I got started by painting Blood Angels, go figure) and warm whites. I just can't really make a recommendation since I mostly use P3 and I'm still getting acquainted with MSP.

Part of what drove my answer is which colors get used all the time and don't have really good alternate choices. There are lots of variants of browns from many manufacturers and you can usually find a substitute for whatever color you think you need, for instance. It's the colors that are hard to find substitutes for that I find indispensable.

If you put it that way.. Amethyst Purple.

The Terran Khaki triad keeps finding it's way onto miniatures.  I like using the Khaki Highlight as a base for Linen White.

 

Linen White and Ghost White also keep showing up, but I'm painting mostly Imperial Assault--so, yeah, lots of white.

 

The Soil Colors and Stone Colors triads are very handy as well.

 

If you are wanting to switch over to Reaper, don't forget about the Power Pallet!

For a new-ish painter I see 2 ways to start collecting the essentials...

 

1. The LTPKs. A decent selection of colours that works well together + great instructions, brushes and even spiffy carrying cases.

Add liners and a varnish and you're good to go, mostly.

 

2. Buy the Complete bones kit, Brown liner, varnish and yeah, you're good to go.

 

The Palomino Gold is a good addition to those options as it's not just a nice colour by itself, but works very well as a base for yellows and golds.

 

Anything else really depends on what you're painting, really, and to which level you're painting it.

 

But it doesn't hurt to look at other brands, also, as MSP doesn't necessarily contain everything you may want.

Doing a lot of skeleton armies?

Vallejo has a 'skeleton bone' primer...

Tamiya's 'Clears' aren't water-based acrylics, but they work well for gems and stuff.

The flesh triads. Since I started using them, my minis skin looks like skin, and not diseased. (Although pale still gives me fits.)
