CMPA Three Color Challenge

Recommended Posts

The Three Color Challenge is the brain child of forumite (and CMPA member) skippen. The idea is to select a miniature, then select, or have someone else select, three colors with which to paint the figure. Black and White are added to allow for highlighting and shading and color mixing is allowed and encouraged. The idea is that by limiting the palette and maybe using colors that may fall outside of one's comfort range, something could be learned.

If you wish to participate in this challenge, please do! If you're struggling with colors and lack friends who are willing to give you opinions, look in the spoiler tag below. When it comes to picking the colors, the idea behind the colors isn't to pick strange combinations or to make this intentionally difficult based on the color choices. You'll find it hard enough to operate without proper flesh tones or metallic paints. I found it a good suggestion because I had to stretch myself and use some paints in combinations I wouldn't have otherwise. Overall, the point is to have fun!

Spoiler

If you're having trouble with picking colors, past this javascript code into a browser console or a page like jconsole.com. This will select three colors, one each from three rough categories: Red + Yellow, Greens + Blues, Browns + Greys. I've normalized this color list removing all the liners, inks, washes, and technicals. I've also removed most of the skin tones and all the metallics. Run the pickColors() function as many times as you like, it will always print three colors out. If you don't have that particular color, in keeping with the challenge, use something close to it or as close as you can find from a different manufacturer.

let paints = {'rdyl': ["Red Brick","Deep Red","Blood Red","Fire Red","Phoenix Red","Fire Orange","Marigold Yellow","Sunlight Yellow","Violet Red","Pale Violet Red","Burnt Orange","Bloodstain Red","Clotted Red","Carnage Red","Magma Red","Lava Orange","Explosion Orange","Auburn Shadow","Carrot Top Red","Highlight Orange","Saffron Sunset","Blush Pink","Big Top Red", "Punk Rock Pink"], 'blgr':["Sapphire Blue","True Blue","Sky Blue","Midnight Blue","Twilight Blue","Snow Shadow","Pine Green","Leaf Green","Pale Green","Forest Green","Grass Green","Jade Green","Muddy Olive","Olive Green","Pale Olive","Imperial Purple","Amethyst Purple","Burgundy Wine","Breonne Blue","Templar Blue","Ashen Blue","Deep Ocean","Marine Teal","Surf Aqua","Jungle Moss","Highland Moss","Pale Lichen","Ritterlich Blue","Brilliant Blue","Cyan Blue","Olive Shadow","Olive Drab","Worn Olive","Swamp Green","Military Green","Camoflage Green","Ultramarine Shadow","Ultramarine Blue","Peacock Green","Brilliant Green","Mint Green","Regal Purple","Monarch Purple", "Royal Purple"], 'brgr':["Uniform Brown","Mahogany Brown","Chestnut Brown","Rust Brown","Chestnut Gold","Palomino Gold","Buckskin Pale","Dark Shadow","Dark Skin","Dark Highlights","Muddy Brown","Earth Brown","Leather Brown","Tanned Leather","Amber Gold","Golden Blonde","Tanned Shadow","Rainy Grey","Ruddy Leather","Oiled Leather","Shadowed Stone","Stone Grey","Weathered Stone","Khaki Shadow","Terran Khaki","Faded Khaki","Walnut Brown","Blackened Brown","Intense Brown","Stained Ivory","Yellowed Bone","Dark Elf Shadow","Dark Elf Skin","Dark Elf Highlight","Woodstain Brown","Shield Brown","Driftwood Brown","Russet Brown","Harvest Brown","Orange Brown","Muddy Soil","Basic Dirt","Brown Sand", "Sandy Brown"]};

	function pickColors() {
		let color1 = paints['blgr'][Math.floor(Math.random()*paints['blgr'].length)];
		let color2 = paints['rdyl'][Math.floor(Math.random()*paints['rdyl'].length)];
		let color3 = paints['brgr'][Math.floor(Math.random()*paints['brgr'].length)];
		console.log(color1);
		console.log(color2);
		console.log(color3);

I'll probably try some more critters like this when I am attempting to paint faster. May as well combine two weak points to work on!

Might see if I have one or two humanoids at some point, but not with deadline figures first.

Will post pics of my scorpion 3-color later.

So I have a WIP thread up about my process on this. It's a little awkward cuz the figure is actually done, I just thought it might help people if I walked through what I did. I'll post the show off thread later.

I'll have to think about this. I like the concept a lot, painting time is just very precious these days.

Snag a small Bones figure to fart around with :poke: I have similar dilemma.

Well, that is the dilemma I don't have time to just mess around with something I don't want to put meaningful time into. Every minute really does count. Enough so that I keep plenty of stuff prepped and ready to go, if time were available I have minis I could this with right now. They just have better uses so I have to weight the pros and cons.

Surgery, even minor surgery, tends to change your perspectives just a bit.

Yeah, it's fun but can definitely see where it can be a bit of a time waster. I was very excited to paint something after ReaperCon but also needed something to goof off with. Wasn't ready to start any major projects. Still in the planning stages.

      So there's a thing called Inktober/Drawlloween that @Pingo reminded me about, where you draw/paint/sketch/art a thing every day during October. There's the "official" list of daily prompts...

      and this other one that Pingo found that I think is cooler.

      So who else is up for the challenge?

      So, recently, I enjoyed visiting twitter (something I never really do and am honestly uncertain if "visiting" is even the right word to employ...showing my age, I know...) and looking at the pictures from the Cute Animal Tweet Off.  It made my day!  A bight a cheery bit of internet amid the dark an depressing wintery mix around it.  I feel inspired to start our own miniature version of this!

      Let's have a game!  Post pictures of cute miniatures we find all around the internet.  They can be your own work, so someone else's, just make sure to credit the source!  And have fun!!!  Bring joy to others through the power of CUTE!

      Here's one I've always loved:  Ali Bailey's version of the Easter Mousling.  Soooooo cute!!!!

      So I went to the CT Renaissance Faire today, saw some things there that I thought I would share with the forum folks, some of whom I have read go to Faires themselves.
      Share some pics all you Travellers!*

      First Myself and a pretty lady that asked for a picture:

      I was alone, so I asked her SO to use my camera to take a pic, as I have no current pics of myself in garb..

      Some things I saw that will make the wolves drool....

      I asked about the mail, it was a commissioned work.

      A young lady wearing a T-Shirt that I really laughed when I saw it! Talk about someone that needs to be on these forums!

      Where was she a few weeks ago, clean up would have been so easy!
      I think she was surprised someone in Garb wanted to take her picture...

      An awesome couple of Fey:

      (I kept wanting to say "I am Groot!", when ever I saw them....)

      A chance met Traveller that paints Minis! Told him about the Forums, maybe he will lurk, look, and Join!

      Loved the scale mail...

      So that's all Folks!
      (Yeah, I didn't take my camera out to much.... )

      Had a great time!
      Sorry I missed you Mad Jack!

      * Travellers was a term used at the NY Ren Faire years ago to denote people in costume, that attended regularly, but did not work at the Faire.
      As opposed to the "'Danes" short for MunDANEs....
