What do your family and friends think of your obsession with tiny figures and painting them?

My dad built a light aircraft and collected David Winter cottages; the 15mm figures I painted for him get pointed out regularly by both him and my mom. My mom's mother took up oil painting when she was in her 70s. My mom's father loved wood working, including complex detail work. My dad's father took up silversmithing when he retired and did gorgeous stone inlay work. My dad's mother did needlepoint. I don't know that crafting is genetic, but if it's environmental, the environment was right for me.

And then my wife and son paint and most of my friends are role-players and many also paint minis. And many of the ones who aren't role-players are artists.

Oh, and working in a marketing group, many of my co-workers are artists as well.

Art is just something everybody around me does, it seems.

My wife is supportive and understanding (especially considering my growing collection of unpainted minis).  And it's better than working, which is what I seem to be doing a lot of time in the evenings.  Or some weekends. (Or another way to look at it: I haven't painted in over a week, thanks to work.)

My mother is more amused than anything else.  I didn't learn until after I started painting BattleTech minis that she had been painting minis herself when I was very, very young.  She still has some of them.

My in-laws are indifferent, but they haven't really seen what I've been working on either.

My friends are also indifferent, mostly because it's not something that interests them or they're not aware of it.

A substantial number of my friends are gamers and/or hobbyists, who at least understand it, even if they are not figmentia sufferers, like us. (You guys are my friends too, right?)

For the most part, my other friends and family are indifferent. They may occasionally give me a "that's cool", or "how do you paint something so small?", but they don't have any real interest in the hobby. Off-hand, I can't think of anybody who actively disapproves.

My parents got me into it. At this point my family just thinks it's normal.

Most of my friends are gamers. My brides friends... Kind of shrug.

My coworkers are baffled and amused to see me paint at lunch.

My wife encourages it, so long as I don't spend too much money. She has only once made a comment about the collection of unpainted minis.  I want her to try to paint as well, and she is keen to, but most of the time we are both too tired (i haven't painted in months now).

Two of my friends are into it; one participated in Bones III, but he is capricious and I think he has moved on to another hobby and has not even touched the minis...I am secretly hoping to get them from him at some point ::D:

Most people are impressed with the fact I paint such small things, and while they are sincere, they clearly do not match my enthusiasm.

My mom I think has become more supportive of it over time, and recently specifically. It may have helped that I offered to paint a critter-person for her and she went a bit wild on the CMON sale when I casually pointed her there for "holiday and birthday stuff and if she wants critters painted for her".

My family thinks it's a waste of time, like everything else  I've done in my life. <_<

My friends think it's quite interesting, I've gotten a couple of them to get figures that look like their characters, and one has me painting hers up. One of my friends opened up the FLGS here this year, and I've been able to slowly get her to add more and more painting and sculpting supplies to the store.

Quest & Question: combine the names of two fictional characters from separate worlds (ex: Sansa Wesley from Harry Thrones or Heisenburger from Breaking Bob). Make it funny or serious. What do you come up with? Describe your new character and their world.

John Clark/John Kelly of Tom Clancy's books and John Rambo from David Morrell's book First Blood, not that either one should be messed with, but combined who needs an Army or a Navy.

Most of my family understand and enjoys seeing completed paints, and my wife enables it by buying for most birthdays and Christmases.  Most of my friends paint figs too!

Husband actively enables me as I paint for his games he runs. My Mom used to paint them herself and is glad I have something that keeps me out of trouble. My Stepdad is always impressed at how much detail I can get into something that small. I have a friend that painted for a very short stint but doesn't have the patience/time for it. We talk about it on a regular basis and he's probably the most supportive (outside of family) aside from y'all.

Mild mannered detective Clark Shaft is SuperBlax!

On the day he believed he prevented his long time nemesis, the megalomaniac industrialist Bumpy Luthor, from launching a weapon, he finds that Bumpy led him to his pad to have him save his kidnapped daughter Lois from the clutches of the Brainiaccosi family who have access to advanced technology beyond that of Bumpy's and vie for control of the city.

They say this Kryptonian is a bad mother
SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
I'm talkin' 'bout SuperBlax
THEN WE CAN DIG IT!

They know nothing! They just know I like artistry stuff and that I was always good at it. Rest of the family is more music orientated, so it never comes up.

Living 1400km away from my closest relatives also means they don't visit much, so can't see my shelf (cases?) of shame.

Great question!

My family have commented that they are surprised that I can paint details on something so small.  Beyond that, it's not really a topic of discussion.

My gaming group think it's great as they get to play with painted minis.

My non-geeky friends pretty much went, "Oh, that's nice" and then switched the topic of conversation. ::D:
