Are you working on any minis (or related crafts) as seasonal holiday projects or gifts?

I've done so once or twice but have no targets of opportunity this year.

What is the most useful piece of advice you have received due to frequenting these forums?

Try it anyway.

There is so much that I have learnt on these forums that I honestly couldn't identify any single piece of advice.  The great thing about being here is that, after a while, you pick up things almost by osmosis.  I don't know much about painting (still being very much an amateur painting) but so much of what I do know has been picked up in a little post here and a little post there.  So many people here give out advice or tips or share how they painted something that just by reading the various posts, so much knowledge gets embedded in my brain without me realizing it.

To all the amazing painters in this forum - you guys are amazing and awe-inspiring and real role models for others!

What is your favorite winter seasonal/holiday tasty treat? Why? Got a recipe? We're hungry.

... Well, we tend to do a standing rib - cow - for Yule feast... And there's Yorkshire pudding - if I have the drippings to do it - and roasted potatoes and ... well. Let's just say, we have a feast.

This is also the time of year when I make pumpkin cake. The only time, because Mr. Thorne is allergic.

Spoiler

                      Pumpkin Cake

2 cups flour
1 & 1/2 cups sugar     2 cups canned pumpkin (1 16 oz can)
2 tsp Baking powder  1 cup oil
2 tsp Baking soda       4 eggs
1/2 tsp salt                   1 pkg chocolate chips  (If you're feeling decadent, use milk chocolate).
1/2 tsp cinnamon        1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Grease & flour a large tube pan. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
      Put all dry ingredients in a large bowl & mix eggs, oil, & pumpkin;
nuts & chips last. mix well.
Bake about an hour, or until springy when touched. Needs no icing

A Treat..so not a dinner or something..

Hmmm...Lots of chocolate around this season.

Gingerbread nuts, marzipan, sugar fondant animals..

Mostly because of Sinterklaas and Christmas.

Dec 1st: For the first time in over a decade, my original library is organized! At least by genre anyway. The four large totes that constitute the Austin expansion to it still need to be added in as do the new bookshelves, but that won't be until Jan as I want to ensure that any bedbugs hiding in them are dead.(They've been packed away since the begininng of Sept, and the ones that haven't starved should be killed off by the cold as the shed they are in isn't heated.)

Dec 2nd: On my pilgimage to Reaper HQ I picked up a small horde of bones mouslings which will be painted in holiday colors and distributed to the worthy. That's the theory anyway, I've become rather addicted to Mordheim City of the Damned on ps4 which tends to eat into my hobby time.

Dec 3rd: I can't say for certain what the most useful advice was, because every time I wander around here I learn something and it starts to blend together after awhile in a cornucopia of knowings.

Dec 4th: As far back as I can recall there have been the Christmas Cookies. Simple cutouts with icing and sprinkles, they are to my mind the taste of the season. They were also a useful stealth training aid in my younger years. The challenge was to liberate as many as possible when they were left to dry on the dining room table. I was not often successful in this, but when I was....well Goodfellas got it right when Henry says that stolen food tastes better.

Probably my mom's "rum log" cookies. Why? Because they are super tasty, and did you see the word rum in the title? Yeah, makes dealing with family so much easier. :p Sadly I don't have the recipe, but might be able to snag it later in the month -- assuming I remember.

Grandma's stuffing is right up there too, but we usually only have that on Turkey Massacre Day, which around here isn't usually quite "winter seasonal" yet.

Got thru this fraggin' week. Still suffering the aftereffects of the Pernicious Man Plague, aka the common cold.

Still think it hits harder if you have a Y chromosome.

Based on how incredibly whiney my husband gets when he gets sick, I do believe you are correct.

Everyone has such grown-up things to be proud of.

...and mine is a toss-up between making a chicken and bacon pie with home-made pastry for the first time or the face I painted on my Gretel mini

Hey, I'm proud of platinuming a video game.

Of course, it's a bear of a game, with so many side quests and other things to do, it's no wonder so many people don't "finish" it...

Sorta. I had to put my holiday campaign on hold due to everything that was going on with my dad. I'm getting back into painting the minis for that. I'll run that game next year.

Lefse and Rømmegrøt. But I don't make them, so recipes are not easily available to me now.

They constitute the desert portions (served first, as is only right) of our White Christmas Eve:

Lefse

Rømmegrøt

Flatbread

Boiled Cod

Boiled Potatoes

We used brightly colored plates so we can find the meal.

My Mom's butter cookies. They were unbelievably good. In addition to the ones for the house, she always made a large tin of them to bring to my Aunt Ivy's. They always seemed to disappear from the car & reappear in the house. My Dad & I claimed ignorance of just how this phenomenon occurred...ever year. I regret that I can't ask her for her recipe.

Yes (Mrs. Spinner, if for some weird reason you are reading this, DO NOT open the following spoiler).

Spoiler

I am sculpting a ring for my wife and will be casting it for her.  It will be my first real attempt at jewelry and high temperature casting.
